Book Synopsis Lie Groups, Physics, and Geometry by : Robert Gilmore
Download or read book Lie Groups, Physics, and Geometry written by Robert Gilmore and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-01-17 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describing many of the most important aspects of Lie group theory, this book presents the subject in a 'hands on' way. Rather than concentrating on theorems and proofs, the book shows the applications of the material to physical sciences and applied mathematics. Many examples of Lie groups and Lie algebras are given throughout the text. The relation between Lie group theory and algorithms for solving ordinary differential equations is presented and shown to be analogous to the relation between Galois groups and algorithms for solving polynomial equations. Other chapters are devoted to differential geometry, relativity, electrodynamics, and the hydrogen atom. Problems are given at the end of each chapter so readers can monitor their understanding of the materials. This is a fascinating introduction to Lie groups for graduate and undergraduate students in physics, mathematics and electrical engineering, as well as researchers in these fields.

Book Synopsis Lie Group Mathematics by : Edited by: Kisak
Download or read book Lie Group Mathematics written by Edited by: Kisak and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-10-12 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical Lie groups are smooth differentiable manifolds and as such can be studied using differential calculus, in contrast with the case of more general topological groups. Lie groups represent the best-developed theory of continuous symmetry of mathematical objects and structures, which makes them indispensable tools for many parts of contemporary mathematics, as well as for modern theoretical physics. Lie groups provide a natural framework for analyzing the continuous symmetries of differential equations in much the same way as permutation groups are used in Galois theory for analyzing the discrete symmetries of algebraic equations. An extension of Galois theory to the case of continuous symmetry groups was one of Lie's principal motivations. This book gives an overview of the current state of Lie Group Mathematics.
Book Synopsis Lie Groups and Lie Algebras - A Physicist's Perspective by : Adam M. Bincer
Download or read book Lie Groups and Lie Algebras - A Physicist's Perspective written by Adam M. Bincer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended for graduate students in Physics. It starts with a discussion of angular momentum and rotations in terms of the orthogonal group in three dimensions and the unitary group in two dimensions and goes on to deal with these groups in any dimensions. All representations of su(2) are obtained and the Wigner-Eckart theorem is discussed. Casimir operators for the orthogonal and unitary groups are discussed. The exceptional group G2 is introduced as the group of automorphisms of octonions. The symmetric group is used to deal with representations of the unitary groups and the reduction of their Kronecker products. Following the presentation of Cartan's classification of semisimple algebras Dynkin diagrams are described. The book concludes with space-time groups - the Lorentz, Poincare and Liouville groups - and a derivation of the energy levels of the non-relativistic hydrogen atom in n space dimensions.

Book Synopsis Theory Of Groups And Symmetries: Finite Groups, Lie Groups, And Lie Algebras by : Alexey P Isaev

This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents the main approaches in study of algebraic structures of symmetries in models of theoretical and mathematical physics, namely groups and Lie algebras and their deformations. It covers the commonly encountered quantum groups (including Yangians). The second main goal of the book is to present a differential geometry of coset spaces that is actively used in investigations of models of quantum field theory, gravity and statistical physics. The third goal is to explain the main ideas about the theory of conformal symmetries, which is the basis of the AdS/CFT correspondence. The theory of groups and symmetries is an important part of theoretical physics. In elementary particle physics, cosmology and related fields, the key role is played by Lie groups and algebras corresponding to continuous symmetries. For example, relativistic physics is based on the Lorentz and Poincare groups, and the modern theory of elementary particles — the Standard Model — is based on gauge (local) symmetry with the gauge group SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1). This book presents constructions and results of a general nature, along with numerous concrete examples that have direct applications in modern theoretical and mathematical physics.

Book Synopsis Noncompact Lie Groups and Some of Their Applications by : Elizabeth A. Tanner
Download or read book Noncompact Lie Groups and Some of Their Applications written by Elizabeth A. Tanner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past two decades representations of noncompact Lie groups and Lie algebras have been studied extensively, and their application to other branches of mathematics and to physical sciences has increased enormously. Several theorems which were proved in the abstract now carry definite mathematical and physical sig nificance. Several physical observations which were not understood before are now explained in terms of models based on new group-theoretical structures such as dy namical groups and Lie supergroups. The workshop was designed to bring together those mathematicians and mathematical physicists who are actively working in this broad spectrum of research and to provide them with the opportunity to present their recent results and to discuss the challenges facing them in the many problems that remain. The objective of the workshop was indeed well achieved. This book contains 31 lectures presented by invited participants attending the NATO Advanced Research Workshop held in San Antonio, Texas, during the week of January 3-8, 1993. The introductory article by the editors provides a brief review of the concepts underlying these lectures (cited by author [*]) and mentions some of their applications. The articles in the book are grouped under the following general headings: Lie groups and Lie algebras, Lie superalgebras and Lie supergroups, and Quantum groups, and are arranged in the order in which they are cited in the introductory article. We are very thankful to Dr.

Book Synopsis Group Theory by : Predrag Cvitanović
Download or read book Group Theory written by Predrag Cvitanović and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2008-07-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If classical Lie groups preserve bilinear vector norms, what Lie groups preserve trilinear, quadrilinear, and higher order invariants? Answering this question from a fresh and original perspective, Predrag Cvitanovic takes the reader on the amazing, four-thousand-diagram journey through the theory of Lie groups. This book is the first to systematically develop, explain, and apply diagrammatic projection operators to construct all semi-simple Lie algebras, both classical and exceptional. The invariant tensors are presented in a somewhat unconventional, but in recent years widely used, "birdtracks" notation inspired by the Feynman diagrams of quantum field theory. Notably, invariant tensor diagrams replace algebraic reasoning in carrying out all group-theoretic computations. The diagrammatic approach is particularly effective in evaluating complicated coefficients and group weights, and revealing symmetries hidden by conventional algebraic or index notations. The book covers most topics needed in applications from this new perspective: permutations, Young projection operators, spinorial representations, Casimir operators, and Dynkin indices. Beyond this well-traveled territory, more exotic vistas open up, such as "negative dimensional" relations between various groups and their representations. The most intriguing result of classifying primitive invariants is the emergence of all exceptional Lie groups in a single family, and the attendant pattern of exceptional and classical Lie groups, the so-called Magic Triangle. Written in a lively and personable style, the book is aimed at researchers and graduate students in theoretical physics and mathematics.

Book Synopsis Group Theory in Subnuclear Physics by : Fl Stancu
Download or read book Group Theory in Subnuclear Physics written by Fl Stancu and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 1996 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a useful and accessible introduction to symmetry principles in particle physics. Concepts of group theory are clearly explained and their applications to subnuclear physics brought up to date. The book begins with introductions to both the types of symmetries known in physics and to group theory and representation theory. Successive chapters deal with the symmetric groups and their Young diagrams, braid groups, Lie groups and algebras, Cartan's classification of semi-simple groups, and the Lie groups most used in physics are treated in detail. Gauge groups are discussed, and applications to elementary particle physics and multiquark systems introduced throughout the book where appropriate. Many worked examples are also included. There is a growing interest in the quark structure of hadrons and in theories of particle interactions based on the principle of gauge symmetries. Students and researchers on theoretical physics will make great strides in their work with the ideas and applications found here.
