Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear cardiac imaging is the diagnostic technique of using radiology and chemical markers to track cardiac performance. These imaging studies provide a wide range of information about the heart, including how much the heart contracts, the amount of blood supply to the heart and whether parts of the heart muscle are alive or dead. This is essential information for cardiologists, and nuclear imaging has become an increasingly important part of the cardiologist's armoury of diagnostic techniques. Iskandrian's text has become a leading book in the field and the fourth edition will continue the tradition. The text is updated throughout to reflect the many advances in the field, and, as a new feature, each chapter concludes with a question and answer session on important and difficult clinical issues.

In so doing, the authors have attempted to deal with the relevant issues that a laboratory director must address in either setting up the laboratory or maintaining its competitive edge and clinical competence over time. The authors primarily attempted to identify issues related to outpatient imaging facilities. However, where appropriate issues related to inpatients in hospital-based laboratories are also discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of the 4th edition of the Atlas of Nuclear Cardiology is to provide physicians and students in cardiology, radiology, and nuclear medicine who want the latest information in the field of cardiovascular nuclear medicine up-to-date and comprehensive information on advances in instrumentation, radiotracers, protocols, and clinical studies. Unlike other books that are narrow in their scope of either technology and technique or clinical studies, the 4th edition of the Atlas will present diagnostic algorithms and schematic diagrams integrated with nuclear cardiology procedures generously interspersed with color illustrations to emphasize key concepts in cardiovascular physiology, pathology, and metabolism relevant for the clinical practice of cardiology. The atlas emphasizes today’s most current information, meeting the requirements for those who will be using the book as a reference source for certifying or re-certifying in cardiology, nuclear cardiology, nuclear medicine or radiology. Hybrid PET/CT and SPECT/CT represent new technologies that were introduced recently in clinical medicine and are evolving rapidly with several improvements in instrumentation, imaging procedures as well as in clinical trials that support the expanded role of these technologies in clinical practice. As such, an updated 4th edition of the Atlas is critical in order for the clinicians remain current with the imaging field and maintain their skills. Imaging protocols with the se technologies have to be updated and/or expanded in order to acquire high quality images at a reduced radiation burden to the patient while advancing the application of these techniques for more advanced disease detection. Accordingly, beyond significantly updating the chapters from the 3rd edition, 2 new chapters will be introduced in the 4th edition, which reflects the expanded clinical applications of the technologies in the past 3 years. The new chapters are as follows: "Hybrid SPECT/CT and PET/CT Imaging" and a dedicated chapter on "Radiation Safety and Exposure: Clinical Decision-Making and the Risk-Benefit Ratio". Chapter 7 from the 3rd edition will be deleted. The updated Atlas will serve as a reference source for all cardiologists, radiologists, and nuclear medicine physicians interested in the most up-to-date approaches to noninvasive diagnostic cardiovascular nuclear imaging techniques for the evaluation of patients with known or suspected coronary artery disease as well as non-coronary heart disease. It will also serve as a ready reference textbook for medical students and residents interested in the practice of cardiovascular medicine.

Book excerpt: In recent years there have been major advances in the fields of cardiovascular nuclear medicine and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. In nuclear cardiology more adequate tomographic systems have been designed for routine cardiac use, as well as new or improved quantitative analytic software packages both for planar and tomographic studies implemented on modern state-of-the-art workstations. In addition, artificial intelligence techniques are being applied to these images in attempts to interpret the nuclear studies in a more objective and reproducible manner. Various new radiotracers have been developed, such as antimyosin, labeled isonitriles, metabolic compounds, etc. Furthermore, alternative stress testing with dipyridamole and dobutamine has received much attention in clinical cardiac practice. Magnetic resonance imaging is a relative newcomer in cardiology and has already shown its merits, not only for anatomical information but increasingly for the functional aspects of cardiac performance. This book covers almost every aspect of quantitative cardiovascular nuclear medicine and magnetic resonance imaging. It will assist the nuclear medicine physician, the radiologist, the physicist/image processing specialist and the clinical cardiologist in understanding the nuclear medicine techniques used in cardiovascular medicine, and in increasing our knowledge of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging.

Book excerpt: Cardiovascular nuclear medicine emerged 15 years ago as a new noninvasive technique for the detection of human cardiac disease. It arised from the fields of nuclear medicine and cardiology and the cooperation of both specialties has been very productive. At present, nuclear cardiology techniques belong to the routine armamentarium of the clinical cardiologist. Results obtained by perfusion markers, metabolic tracers, and radionuclide angiography have shown to have important impact on patient management. Although exercise electrocardiography and echocar diography yield the large bulk of necessary data in the cardiac patient, nuclear cardiology provides important data that go far beyond the results obtained by the standard procedures. Magnetic resonance imaging is a relative newcomer in cardio logy and has still to prove its value in clinical cardiology . Yet, initial results have been encouraging both in congenital heart disease and in coronary artery disease. This book is based on 16 review publications that have been written throughout the period of 1985 till present time. Most chapters have been published in the period 1989 until 1991; the preceding review papers have been updated as much as possible. Furthermore, Chapter 15 entitled" What's new in cardiac imaging" has been espe cially written for this book. The Chapters 9, 11 and 13 have been recently written and have not been published yet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear medicine is undergoing major orientation both praetieally and eoneeptu ally. To this point nuclear medieine has direeted the major portion of its effort to visualization of statie organ systems. The true value of this teehnique lies not in its ability to graphieally display organ systems, but rather its ability to measure organ funetion in a noninvasive manner. Dr. Serafini and his eolleagues have, in this book, brought together the experts of the different phases of cardiodynamies. The eontents lead one to believe that there are relatively simple innoeuous tests that ean supply large amounts of extremely important physiologie data without the neeessity for open invasion of the heart. Perhaps the most exciting part of the studies is the glimpse into the future they provide. The depth and versatility of these teehniques is displayed by the surprising variety of problems amenable to nuclear medieine examination. Perhaps the one point that is ever present in all these teehniques is the ability to perform the tests sequentially in different time frames as the patient's eondi tion ehanges or a major event is taking plaee, sueh as surgery. The work presented in this volume must be eonsidered the genesis of the new nuc1ear medieine and I, for one, look forward with great anticipation to what will follow.
