Download or read book Nubia written by Margo Veillon and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1964 onward much of the ancient land of Nubia sank forever in the waters of Lake Nasser, behind the new Aswan High Dam. Margo Veillon had been fascinated by the vibrancy, color, and movement of the life of ordinary people in Nubia since the 1930s. In the company of friends and fellow artists she made numerous extended visits to capture in her artwork a lifestyle that has now vanished. This book is a record of her journeys. Presenting the Nile as this beautiful land's thoroughfare, her drawings and photographs reflect the impact of this world upon her. Veillon's diaries, notes, and pictures vividly illuminate one of the world's most visually oriented cultures in a style that is as expressive as its subject, thus offering not only an image captured at a particular moment in time, which will never be seen again, but the sensitivity and skill of brain, eye, and hand that made that capture possible. Also available:Margo Veillon: The Bursting Movement edited by Charlotte Hug (AUC Press, 1996)Margo Veillon: Egyptian Harvestsedited by Charlotte Hug (AUC Press, 2000)Margo Veillon: Egyptian Festivalsedited by Bruno Ronfard (AUC Press, 2002)Margo Veillon: Painting Egypt: The Masterpiece Collection at the American University in Cairoedited by Bruno Ronfard (AUC Press, 2003)
Book Synopsis Adventures in Egypt and Nubia by : Patricia Usick
Download or read book Adventures in Egypt and Nubia written by Patricia Usick and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William John Bankes (1786-1855) was a brilliant and remarkable man. In 1812 he went to Spain and Portugal to pursue a Bohemian lifestyle among the gypsies. This was followed by travels in the Near East. Bankes amassed a vast portfolio of notes, manuscripts and drawings by the artists who accompanied him on his Egyptian travels. Their extremely high degree of accuracy makes them a very valuable record of the ancient monuments, many of which have since been damaged or lost. His intuitive detective work and the many copies of hieroglyphic inscriptions he accumulated were instrumental in the struggle to decipher hieroglyphs. This book tells Bankes' story, describing his travels in detail and assessing his contribution to Egyptology.

Book Synopsis Finishing the Mysteries of Gods and Symbols by : Seven Star Hand
Download or read book Finishing the Mysteries of Gods and Symbols written by Seven Star Hand and published by Seven Star Hand. This book was released on 2010-09-17 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is comprehensive proof that the symbolism of many ancient texts, canons, and concepts is an advanced and extremely ancient spiritual and philosophical technology that predates all extant religions and mystery schools. Consequently, here is proof, beyond disproof, that all three so-called “Faiths of Abraham” are purposeful deceptions. Accordingly, related esoterica, mystery schools, and the New Age are rife with error caused by undue reliance upon the assertions of these religions and their leaders. Throughout this book, I present verifiable proof that ancient sages and prophets opposed religion and wisely never trusted religious leaders. As comprehensive validation of this, they redundantly encoded stunning proof of why throughout pivotal symbolic narratives and related concepts. The ancient sages and prophets hid vital secrets from religious leaders throughout the previous several millennia. When these decoded details are compared to the history, words, and deeds of these religions and their leaders, they finally prove the truth about many long-hidden things. These religions have always purposely imposed ignorance based on the deceptive recasting of earlier symbolic concepts and narratives; that also expertly encoded the keys to ancient wisdom as redundant proofs of the truth. Arrogant religious leaders, while hypocritically lecturing others about morality, have long overlooked that the ancient sages and prophets were painfully aware of their then-current and future misdeeds and deceptions, and patiently and expertly prepared for them !!!

Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of Ancient Nubia by : Geoff Emberling
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Ancient Nubia written by Geoff Emberling and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020 with total page 1217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cultures of Nubia built the earliest cities, states, and empires of inner Africa, but they remain relatively poorly known outside their modern descendants and the community of archaeologists, historians, and art historians researching them. The earliest archaeological work in Nubia was motivated by the region's role as neighbor, trade partner, and enemy of ancient Egypt. Increasingly, however, ancient Nile-based Nubian cultures are recognized in their own right as the earliest complex societies in inner Africa. As agro-pastoral cultures, Nubian settlement, economy, political organization, and religious ideologies were often organized differently from those of the urban, bureaucratic, and predominantly agricultural states of Egypt and the ancient Near East. Nubian societies are thus of great interest in comparative study, and are also recognized for their broader impact on the histories of the eastern Mediterranean and the Near East. The Oxford Handbook of Ancient Nubia brings together chapters by an international group of scholars on a wide variety of topics that relate to the history and archaeology of the region. After important introductory chapters on the history of research in Nubia and on its climate and physical environment, the largest part of the volume focuses on the sequence of cultures that lead almost to the present day. Several cross-cutting themes are woven through these chapters, including essays on desert cultures and on Nubians in Egypt. Eleven final chapters synthesize subjects across all historical phases, including gender and the body, economy and trade, landscape archaeology, iron working, and stone quarrying.
Book Synopsis The Racial Hand in the Victorian Imagination by : Aviva Briefel
Download or read book The Racial Hand in the Victorian Imagination written by Aviva Briefel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-09-16 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hands of colonized subjects - South Asian craftsmen, Egyptian mummies, harem women, and Congolese children - were at the crux of Victorian discussions of the body that tried to come to terms with the limits of racial identification. While religious, scientific, and literary discourses privileged hands as sites of physiognomic information, none of these found plausible explanations for what these body parts could convey about ethnicity. As compensation for this absence, which might betray the fact that race was not actually inscribed on the body, fin-de-siècle narratives sought to generate models for how non-white hands might offer crucial means of identifying and theorizing racial identity. They removed hands from a holistic corporeal context and allowed them to circulate independently from the body to which they originally belonged. Severed hands consequently served as 'human tools' that could be put to use in a number of political, aesthetic, and ideological contexts.
