Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprises 11 essays--most of them revised versions of lectures given 1996-1997 at the Albert-Ludwigs University in Freiburg--by German historians of the younger generation (all born since 1951). The purpose of the lecture series was to "leave behind the stale and rigid terms of Holocaust scholarship and public discussion of the issue" (from the editor's foreword). The essays, focusing on Poland, the Soviet Union, Serbia, and France, aim to identify the impulses that drove German activities in each area and to identify how various political goals and ideological convictions combined to produce policy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to Interdisciplinary Toxicology: From Molecules to Man integrates the various aspects of toxicology, from "simple molecular systems, to complex human communities, with expertise from a spectrum of interacting disciplines. Chapters are written by specialists within a given subject, such as a chemical engineer, nutritional scientist, or a microbiologist, so subjects are clearly explained and discussed within the toxicology context. Many chapters are comparative across species so that students in ecotoxicology learn mammalian toxicology and vice versa. Specific citations, further reading, study questions, and other learning features are also included. The book allows students to concurrently learn concepts in both biomedical and environmental toxicology fields, thus better equipping them for the many career opportunities toxicology provides. This book will also be useful to those wishing to reference how disciplines interact within the broad field of toxicology. - Covers major topics and newer areas in toxicology, including nanotoxicology, Tox21, epigenetic toxicology, and organ-specific toxicity - Includes a variety of perspectives to give a complete understanding of toxicology - Written by specialists within each subject area, e.g., a chemical engineer, to ensure concepts are clearly explained

Book excerpt: The manuscript poems of Sir Thomas Wyatt (1503-1542) supply the materials for a case study in the language of the emotions in the Tudor period of Early Modern English. Courtesan and ambassador for his king at a most critical time in Europe, Thomas Wyatt was also the cultivated and enterprising reader and translator of poetry from the Continent who brought new inspiration and new forms to the English tradition. It is with a special focus on the means of expression of the emotions that this work approaches Wyatt’s compositions and explores a language and a body of poetry that not only set the standards for courtly conventions but is a paragon of dramatic intensity; that can in turn be overtly erotic and perhaps secretly political; and that, in its ultimate elusiveness, has both whetted and defeated the curiosity of Wyatt’s biographers. Text analysis software has made it possible to create a comprehensive dictionary from individual word occurrences in the poems and generate a map of words that name or relate to the emotions. The use of an electronic text, especially set up for the analysis, has also made it possible to examine the poetry in cross-section, extrapolating patterns of use for the language of the emotions across the manuscript, and leading to a core of four emotion states that are the cornerstones of Wyatt’s dramatic self-representation.
