In Now is the Time for All Good Men to Come to the Aid of Their Planet, author J. Theo Olonia discusses how, with awareness, we can weigh our actions for the consequences and impact they have on the environment and on life in general. Olonia shows that health and well-being in the future are affected by today's choices. He: ? presents a scientific view of the creation of the universe, describing the formation and evolution of the solar system; ? explains the evolution of our home world through four and a half billion years, including the evolution of humanity; ? describes how wild places are in serious decline and the adverse affect it has on indigenous wild life; ? addresses how we are controlled by our social order, which directly affects the choices we make with respect to the environment; ? discusses the modalities that helped turn his life around, making him more aware and conscious of every aspect of living; ? reviews some of the possible outcomes based on today's choices; an ? offers a new concept of how to relate to Earth-Mother. Now is the Time for All Good Men to Come to the Aid of Their Planet communicates that how we relate today sets the historical course of being stewards of our world, taking what we need with awareness and gratitude, but also giving back to maintain a sustainable, viable world.

Book excerpt: A Textbook of Yoga [Subject Code 841] for Class 11 is designed to facilitate the job roles of Yoga Teacher, Yoga Therapist, Resource Officer in Yoga, Yoga Instructor and Naturopathy Doctor. This book has been developed as per the latest syllabus and examination pattern prescribed by the CBSE. This book is the definitive guide to the study of yoga anatomy, which provides a comprehensive foundation in the practice of yoga. It will also enlighten future generations the tremendous benefits of yoga for the body, mind and soul. Also, it covers all aspects of yoga practice, including postures, breathing, relaxation, meditation, lifestyle and fundamental philosophy. Covering everything from basic postures to relaxation techniques and avoiding common injuries, this book is the only guide readers need to achieve their fittest, healthiest, happiest selves. Yoga teaches us to recognise our own mind-body connection, which is often referred to as "yoga." The movements are meant to be gentle but focused on strengthening your muscles while relaxing your mind. The goal of yoga is to become present in the moment and open up your heart through meditation, breathing exercises and stretching postures. Yoga is a rich and ancient practice that has been around for thousands of years. It's also a practice that has been adapted to modem life, making it accessible to anyone who wants to try it out. The book has three units. The first unit aims at basic knowledge of yoga, aims and objective, its origin, historical background, rules and regulations to be followed by yoga practitioners, major schools and introductions to Yogic practice. The second unit deals with the Yogic text i.e., Patanjali Yoga Sutra, The Bhagwat Geeta, Hatha Pradapika and The Gheranda Samhita. Finally, the third unit discusses the human body, role of yoga for health promotion, yoga attitudes, and holistic approach of yoga towards health, yogic diet and yogic lifestyle. In the demonstration and practice skills we have briefly elaborated about Suryanamaskar, Asana, Pranayama, Bandh, Mudra and their benefits. In this book, we will cover what each pose means and why they work your muscles, so they no longer together as part of an overall wellness routine that helps keep you flexible while strengthening tire easily while moving through daily activities like walking up stairs or sitting at your desk job all day long! Sincere attempts have been made to keep the language of the book simple. The concepts have also been explained through postures and asanas. This will allow the students to have a swift reading of the book, making the content of the book easy to understand. We also hope that this book will boost the students' morale and enormously benefit the teachers. Constructive suggestions for the improvement of the book are most welcome. The authors would be glad to read the feedback and implement it in upcoming books. -Authors

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From an award-winning essayist and acclaimed poet comes this radiant, observant, and warmly funny memoir about childhood, family, and small-town life. Carla Funk grew up in a place of logging trucks and God, pellet guns and parables. Every Sunday, she sat with her mother and brother in the same pew at the Mennonite church while her dad stayed home with his cigarettes and a fridge full of whiskey. In these tender, humorous stories, Funk stitches together the wondrous and the mundane: making snow angels and carrying sacks of potatoes, tossing pig bladders like footballs, and vying for the Christmas pageant spotlight. Part ode to childhood, part love letter to rural life, Every Little Scrap and Wonder offers an original take on the memories, stories, and traditions we all carry within ourselves, whether we planned to or not.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A call for holiness! It appears that in our present time, the world has moved farther and farther from God. Crime is raging all over the land and country. Immorality appears to be an accepted way of life. Attitudes of hatred permeate at many levels of our society. Many churches seem to have lost the mandated mission of soul winning and kingdom building. Many lifestyles of Christians and non-Christians seem to have moved far away from the principles of decent and holy living. Many families have failed to establish and teach biblical principles to their children at early ages; therefore, holy living for them is not a top priority. The fact that many people have not taken holy living seriously enough to spiritually impact their way of life does not negate God's instructions for us to live holy lives. Throughout the Bible, it is expressed over and over again for us to be holy, for God is holy. The ultimate consequence of not living a holy life is that we will miss sharing eternity with God, which is an awesome price to pay. The reason for writing this book came to me in a vision about the need to speak out about our calling from the Word of God to live holy lives. Hearing and applying the call for holy living begins with each individual. If the world is going to get any better, it is going to be up to us the people of God to make a difference. It is my prayer that after reading this book, each of us will aggressively pursue holiness and will also aggressively seek to share the good news of Jesus Christ with others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first seven stories in this book have either locale or characters in common. The village called Fraternity is an actual one; and the surrounding countryside has a beauty which grows with long acquaintance. It is perhaps unnecessary to say that the characters are—with one exception—fictitious. The exception is Mr. A. L. McCorrison, better known as Bert McCorrison, who introduced the author to the trout brooks and the woodcock covers thereabouts. He appears in some of the stories, under the name of Chet McAusland. The third story in the book, "Old Tantrybogus," is—so far as the dog is concerned—a true story. The last two stories in the Fraternity group, "Jeshurun Waxed Fat" and "Epitome," together with the succeeding seven, are each less than four thousand words in length. These stories represent successive attempts to combine brevity with other and more elusive attributes.

Book excerpt: This book gives an answer to the U.S. pre-kindergarten through grade 12 academic crises which are undermining our “American” values, our academic excellence and our U.S. global positioning in the worlds of business, industry, science, technology, and finance. It begins with a chronological examination of the U.S. American education system from 1635 to today, explaining the benefits, limitations, and damages of new and numerous educational trends, fashions, fads, and dogmas that were supposed to have corrected the education system’s deficiencies. It highlights a few of the major critics who exposed the catastrophically declining results, bringing attention to the U.S. student lack of reading, math, and reasoning skills ... thus resulting in millions of children (and adults) being left behind ... lost ... without adequate, life-functioning skills! This has not only put these students individually at risk, but has put our nation at risk ... in global business, science, technology, and financial competition. Synergistic Academics (a curriculum that not only provides individualized, tailored, basic skills curriculum but also weaves together world history with American History, mathematics, language arts, introductions to 5 foreign languages, biology, chemistry, earth science, physics, music appreciation, hands-on art, research and composition, technology, engineering and robotics ... all woven together into one tapestry ... for all students (pre-kindergarten through grade 12). It offers a living-breathing, patriotic curriculum (proven by 35 years of nationally-standardized test results) that not only corrects the U.S. educational deficiencies but provides the tools students need to aspire to American exceptionalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the venue Off Broadway has long been the birthplace of innovative and popular musicals, there have been few studies of these influential works. Long-running champs, such as The Fantasticks and Little Shop of Horrors, are discussed in many books about American musicals, but what of the hundreds of other Off-Broadway musicals? In Off-Broadway Musicals since 1919, Thomas Hischak looks at more than 375 musicals, which are described, discussed, and analyzed, with particular attention given to their books, scores, performers, and creators. Presented chronologically and divided into chapters for each decade, beginning with the landmark musical Greenwich Village Follies (1919), the book culminates with the satiric The Toxic Avenger (2009). In this volume, any work of consequence is covered, especially if it was popular or influential, but also dozens of more obscure musicals are included to illustrate the depth and breadth of Off Broadway. Works that introduced an important artistic talent, from performers to songwriters, are looked at, and the selection represents the various trends and themes that made Off Broadway significant. In addition to essential data about each musical, the plot and score are described, the success (or lack of) is chronicled, and an opinionated commentary discusses the work's merits and influences on the musical theatre in general. The first book of its kind, this highly readable volume will please both the theatre scholar and the average musical theatre patron or fan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Federal Arts Projects were created by FDR in the summer of 1935. A year later, a handful of writers employed in the St. Louis office of the Missouri Writers' Project, including Jack Balch, went out on strike. Lamps at High Noon is the only novel about this strike and the only one to treat comprehensively any aspect of the Federal Writers' Project, whose participants included some of the country's most accomplished and promising authors. Charlie Gest, the wide-eyed and well-intentioned protagonist of the novel, confronts firsthand the project's sometimes underhanded efforts to monitor the political views of its writers. Named assistant director of the project in Monroe (a fictional St. Louis), Gest is vaguely aware that the program's good intentions do not always overshadow the abuses it tolerates, which include shielding corporate interests and avoiding hiring highly qualified black writers. Gest is hounded by a nagging suspicion that, like lamps that burn in broad daylight, the issues at stake in the work stoppage are not the ones that most need addressing. Part radical socialist commentary, part absurdist theater, Balch's novel offers a peerless critical engagement of the economic constraints and political exigencies surrounding debates over the federal funding of art since the New Deal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pathos of the 2008 Great Recession had a fairly wide sweep, from minimum-wage busboys to newspaper heiresses like Veronica Hearst to Federal Reserve chair, Ben Bernanke, whose childhood home was lost as a result of a relative not making timely mortgage paymentswherein all mentioned experienced some type of economic pain, or at least embarrassment, related to the Great Recession. These episodes are captured in this book as a way to bring a slight degree of levity to this economic catastrophe but to also underscore a serious juncture in American social and political theory as well. Author D. Sidney Potter, once a prolific real estate investor in the early to late part of the real estate boom that lead to the bust, puts a spotlight on the real estate finance mortgage industry as once a lucrative insider to now as a disenfranchised member and erstwhile benefactor. The irony of having to make his living as a mortgage operations professional, who now examines the very mortgage financings that once bore his name, does not go past him. His unabrasive and sometimes crude essays examine the usual suspectsfrom bankster CEOs, nascent political movements, and professional legislators to the analytics of mortgage products that resulted in the self-inflicted implosion. Mr. Potters collection of essays acts as a self-entombed time capsule that should be taken as a testimony of fact, not fiction.
