Book excerpt: Ruthenium Oxidation Complexes explores ruthenium complexes, particularly those in higher oxidation states, which function as useful and selective organic oxidation catalysts. Particular emphasis is placed on those systems which are of industrial significance. The preparation, properties and applications of the ruthenium complexes are described, followed by a presentation of their oxidative properties and summary of the different mechanisms involved in the organic oxidations (e.g. oxidations of alcohols, alkenes, arenes and alkynes, alkanes, amines, ethers, phopshines and miscellaneous substrates). Moreover, future trends and developments in the area are discussed. This monograph is aimed at inorganic, organic, industrial and catalysis chemists, especially those who wish to carry out specific organic oxidations using catalytic methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new air-sensitive ruthenium and osmium amido-hydrido complexes RuH(NHCMe 2CMe2NH2)(PPh3)2 and OsH(NHCMe 2CMe2NH2)(PPh3)2 have been synthesized and characterized. The hydrogenation of ketones to alcohols using these catalysts was explored. This included exploring the reactivity of these complexes toward hydrogen gas, ketones and alcohols, as well as performing kinetic experiments. The behaviour of the ruthenium and osmium systems were compared and mechanisms were proposed. Density functional calculations were carried out to model the proposed mechanisms and these were compared with experimental results. RuH(NHCMe2CMe2NH2)(PPh 3)2 was reacted with formic acid to generate RuH(OCHO)(NH 2CMe2CMe2NH2)(PPh3) 2, a model compound for the transfer of hydrogen from ruthenium to a ketone. The reactivity of the amido complexes towards weakly acidic compounds, HX, to generate new diamino complexes of the type MHX(NH2CMe 2CMe2NH2)(PPh3)2 (M = Ru or Os, X = H, OPh, NCCHCN, CH(COOMe)2, CCPh, OPPh2, OP(OEt)2, p-SC6H4OMe) was explored. Useful correlations were drawn relating the effect that the ligand trans to hydride has on the NMR and infrared spectra of these compounds. The complex RuH(OPh)(NH 2CMe2CMe2NH2)(PPh3) 2 hydrogen bonds with an equivalent of phenol to generate RuH(OPh···HOPh)(NH 2CMe2CMe2NH2)(PPh3) 2, which contains an interesting 6-membered ring as a result. This structure is similar to the proposed transition state for the alcohol-assisted splitting of dihydrogen by OsH(NHCMe2CMe2NH2)(PPh 3)2. The novel ruthenium complexes RuHX(1,2-NH2C 6H10NH2)(PPh3)2 (X = OPh, NCCHCN, CCPh, OPPh2, OP(OEt)2, p-SC6H 4OMe) were generated from the reaction of RuHCl(1,2-NH2C 6H10NH2)(PPh3)2 with HX and base. The complexes RuH(CCPh)(diamine)(PPh3)2 (diamine = NH2CMe2CMe2NH2 or 1,2-NH 2C6H10NH2) catalyze the hydrogenation of acetophenone to 1-phenylethanol, but less efficiently than the amido complexes. The complexes MH(CH(COOMe)2)(NH2CMe2CMe 2NH2)(PPh3)2 (M = Ru or Os) and the amido complexes also catalyze the Michael addition of dimethylmalonate to 2-cyclohexen-1-one. The reaction of RuH(NCCHCN)(NH2CMe2CMe 2NH2)(PPh3)2 with 2-cyclohexen-1-one leads to the formation of the trapped Michael adduct RuH(NCC(C6H 9O)CN)(NH2CMe2CMe2NH2)(PPh 3)2. The structure of this complex was used in proposing a mechanism for Michael addition reactions catalyzed by the amido complexes. The relative reactivity and strength of the osmium and ruthenium amido bonds were investigated through a series of competition experiments where HX (X = Cl, OPh, NCCHCN, p-SC6H4OMe) was transferred from OsHX(NH2CMe2CMe2NH2)(PPh 3)2 to RuH(NHCMe2CMe2NH2)(PPh 3)2 leading to RuHX(NH2CMe2CMe 2NH2)(PPh3)2 and OsH(NHCMe2CMe 2NH2)(PPh3)2.

Book excerpt: Equilibrium constants KDM for reactions between acids and bases of phosphorus-containing compounds including phosphonium salts, iron hydrides and ruthenium dihydrogen complexes in CD2Cl 2 (DM) at room temperature are determined by use of 31P and 1H NMR spectroscopy. A continuous scale of pKDM values covering the range 9.7 to -3 is created with acidic compounds [HPR3]BF4 and [FeH(CO)3(PR 3)2]BF4 in CD2Cl2. The crystal structures of [FeH(CO)3(PCy2Ph)2]BF 4 and Fe(CO)3(PCy2Ph)2 are obtained. The new dihydrogen complexes, [Ru(H2)Cl(PPh3)2 (dach)]BF4 (dach = (1R, 2R)-( - )-diaminocyclohexane) and [Ru(H2)Cl{tmeP2(NH)2}]BF4, are prepared and their crystal structures are reported. Their pKDM values are determined to be 8.6 and 6.8, respectively. The heterolytic splitting of dihydrogen in new ruthenium complexes is utilized for the catalytic hydrogenation of the polar bonds in ketones and nitrites. The complex RuHCl{enP2(NH)2} (en = -NHCH2 CH2NH- ) is an active catalyst for nitrile hydrogenation. This catalyst, in combination with Ru(H2)2H2(PCy 3)2, a known catalyst for nitrile hydrogenation, provides very efficient conversion of benzonitrile to benzylamine. The mechanism of the nitrile hydrogenation is proposed. These catalysts are extremely moisture sensitive. The crystal structures of a possible deactivated form of the catalysts, RuH(PhCONH){enP2(NH)2} and RuH(PhCONH){tmeP2(NH) 2}, are reported. The new complex RuH(BH4){enP2(NH) 2} is prepared by RuHCl{enP2(NH)2} and NaBH 4 and its crystal structure was obtained. This is a poor nitrile hydration catalyst. The new tetradentate ligands PPh2C6H4CH=NCMe 2CMe2N=CHC6H4PPh 2 {tmeP2N2} and PPh2C6H 4CH2NHCMe2CMe2NHCH2C 6H4PPh2 {tmeP2(NH)2}, and their ruthenium complexes, trans-RuHCl{tmeP2N 2} and trans-RuHCl{tmeP2(NH)2} (as two isomers), are prepared. The reaction of trans-RuHCl{tmeP 2(NH)2} with KOtBu produces the novel hydridoamido complex RuH{tmeP2NNH}. The reaction of the amido complex with H2 gives, by the heterolytic splitting of dihydrogen, exclusively the dihydridoamine complex trans-Ru(H)2 {tmeP2(NH)2}. The reaction of the amido complex with D2 is also studied. The complex RuH{tmeP2NNH} catalyzes the hydrogenation of acetophenone and a mechanism involving an outer sphere H+/H- transfer to the ketone is proposed. An improved route for the preparation of the phosphine-ketone PPh 2CH2CH2(C=O)Me from PPh2H and CH 2=CH(CO)Me provides an economical and efficient route to the phosphine-hydrazone PPh2CH2CH2(C=N-NH2)Me. The mixture of ruthenium complexes produced from the phosphine-hydrazone catalyzes the hydrogenation of acetophenone to 1-phenylethanol efficiently. The synthesis, structure and preliminary testing of the new precatalyst RuHCl((S, S)-PPM)(PPh3) for ketone hydrogenation are described.

Book excerpt: This book will describe Ruthenium complexes as chemotherapeutic agent specifically at tumor site. It has been the most challenging task in the area of cancer therapy. Nanoparticles are now emerging as the most effective alternative to traditional chemotherapeutic approach. Nanoparticles have been shown to be useful in this respect. However, in view of organ system complicacies, instead of using nanoparticles as a delivery tool, it will be more appropriate to synthesize a drug of nanoparticle size that can use blood transport mechanism to reach the tumor site and regress cancer. Due to less toxicity and effective bio-distribution, ruthenium (Ru) complexes are of much current interest. Additionally, lumiscent Ru-complexes can be synthesized in nanoparticle size and can be directly traced at tissue level. The book will contain the synthesis, characterization, and applications of various Ruthenium complexes as chemotherapeutic agents. The book will also cover the introduction to chemotherapy, classification of Ru- complexes with respect to their oxidation states and geometry, Ruthenium complexes of nano size: shape and binding- selectivity, binding of ruthenium complexes with DNA, DNA cleavage studies and cytotoxicity. The present book will be more beneficial to researchers, scientists and biomedical. Current book will empower specially to younger generation to create a new world of ruthenium chemistry in material science as well as in medicines. This book will be also beneficial to national/international research laboratories, and academia with interest in the area of coordination chemistry more especially to the Ruthenium compounds and its applications.

Book excerpt: The reversible binding of dihydrogen gas on [Ru([eta]2-H 2)H(dppe)2]+ [X]-, where X- = BPh4, B(Arf)4, BF4, PF6 was investigated using 31P and 13C solid state NMR spectroscopy. X-ray crystal structure analysis of the new species [RuH(dppe)2]+ [BPh4] -, [Ru([eta]2-H2)H(dppe)2] + [B(Arf)4]- and [RuCl(dppe) 2]+ [B(Arf)4]- was carried out. As well a comparison of the structure of [RuH(dppe)2]+ [BPh4]- with that of [Ru([eta]2-H2)H(dppe) 2]+ [BPh4]- showed that minor structural changes occur upon loss of the dihydrogen ligand. The activation of X-H bonds, where X = Si, C, S and O, by reaction with Ru(OTf)(CN)(dppe)2 which contains a highly labile triflate ligand was studied. Many new cationic Ru(II) complexes were prepared and characterized. The X-ray crystal structure of [Ru(CCPh)(CN)(dppe)2] + [OTf]- was determined. Finally, the catalyst precursor RuHCl(PPh3)3 was used to carry out various substitution reactions aimed at determining if the method developed to prepare RuHCl(PPh3)(R-BINAP) could be applied as a general method for the preparation of other complexes containing other chiral and non chiral chelating phosphines. These five coordinate complexes could then be further tested for their ability to act as catalysts in the hydrogenation of ketones and imines.
