The European Variscan belt consists of two orogens: the older, northern and the younger, southern. The northern Variscan realm was dominated by Late Devonian–Carboniferous rifting, subduction and collisional events as defined by sedimentary records, crustal growth, recycling of continental crust and large-scale deformations. In contrast, the southern European crust was reworked by major Late Carboniferous collision followed by Permian wrenching. The Late Carboniferous–Permian orogeny overprinted the previously accreted system in the north, but with much lower intensity, resulting in magmatic recycling and extensional tectonics. These two main orogenic cycles do not reflect episodic evolution of a single orogenic system but a complete change in orientation of stress field, thermal regime, degree of reworking and recycling of European crust, reflecting a major switch in plate configurations at the Early–Late Carboniferous boundary.

Pourtant, pénéplané et porteur d'un abondant couvert végétal, le Massif armoricain se prête assez mal aux investigations géologiques, ce qu'ont regretté d'ailleurs la plupart des anciens auteurs. Dès le premier quart du XIXe siècle, des ingénieurs des mines et quelques amateurs éclairés font cependant part d'observations diverses, en Normandie notamment. Les travaux vont se faire plus nombreux au cours du second quart du siècle, et cela dans les différentes régions du Massif armoricain. Avec la deuxième moitié du XIXe siècle s'ouvre une période fructueuse pour les recherches de géologie. L'établissement de cartes se fonde sur des observations précises de stratigraphie avec l'intervention de la paléontologie, et à des analyses tectoniques qui sont traduites par l'exécution de coupes. Ce sont ces mêmes domaines qui demeurent explorés au XXe siècle et dans lesquels s'investissent des auteurs de plus en plus nombreux avec le développement des facultés des sciences et des musées. Les méthodes se trouvent renouvelées (micropaléontologie, stratigraphie séquentielle, analyse microstructurale) et des outils inédits se développent avec l'introduction de la géochimie, de la géochronologie et de la géophysique. Enfin, l'avènement de la tectonique des plaques conduit à des interprétations géodynamiques et paléogéographiques inédites. La présentation thématique de l'ouvrage permet de relater le déroulement des explorations réalisées dans le Massif armoricain pour chacun des grands domaines des sciences géologiques. Elle est agrémentée de nombreux documents iconographiques, présente les biographies de quelques-uns des acteurs de ces investigations et comporte quelque 1 200 références bibliographiques permettant au lecteur de s'orienter dans la profusion des publications.

This realization, along with their basic geological importance, has provoked further research into the nature of continental margins throughout the world. A summary of these findings, as related to both recent and ancient continental margins, is the subject of this book. At various times in the past we had been approached individually to prepare a basic reference to continental margins; we then proposed to do such a volume jointly. However, the stimulus for the present volume eventually arose from a Penrose Conference arranged through the Geological Society of America. This conference was attended by specialists of numerous disciplines and from throughout the world, many of whom insisted that such a volume would be both timely and useful.
