This book was released on 2003 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LES SEMI-CONDUCTEURS PERMETTENT DE REALISER DES CAPTEURS DE GAZ MINIATURES, PEU ONEREUX MAIS MALHEUREUSEMENT PEU SELECTIFS. IL EST POSSIBLE DE REDUIRE CE DEFAUT PAR L'ASSOCIATION DE CAPTEURS (MULTICAPTEUR) SUIVI D'UN TRAITEMENT DES SIGNAUX. MAIS, LA TRES FAIBLE DIVERSITE DES MATERIAUX ACTUELLEMENT UTILISES NE PERMET PAS LA MISE EN UVRE D'UN MULTICAPTEUR PERFORMANT EN RAISON DE LA SIMILITUDE DES REPONSES INDIVIDUELLES. CE MEMOIRE PRESENTE L'ETUDE DE MATERIAUX ORIGINAUX. L'UN EST UN POLYMERE ORGANIQUE DONT L'ASPECT CRISTAL LIQUIDE FACILITE LA MISE EN UVRE ET L'AUTRE UN MATERIAU TOUT A FAIT NOUVEAU DANS LE DOMAINE DES CAPTEURS, UN SEMI-CONDUCTEUR III-V, L'INP. LE PREMIER MATERIAU, UN POLYPYRROLE RENDU MESOMORPHE PAR INGENIERIE CHIMIQUE, NE S'EST REVELE SENSIBLE QU'AUX GAZ OXYDANTS. DES INSTABILITES DE SON DOPAGE INITIAL CONDUISENT A DES DERIVES INACCEPTABLES POUR UN CAPTEUR. CETTE ETUDE A CEPENDANT PERMIS DE MONTRER QU'UN MODELE D'ACTION DES GAZ, PRECEDEMMENT DEVELOPPE AU LABORATOIRE POUR DES CRISTAUX MOLECULAIRES, EST AUSSI APPLICABLE A DES MATERIAUX MOINS ORGANISES TELS QUE CES POLYPYRROLES. LE DEUXIEME MATERIAU, DES COUCHES MINCES D'INP EPITAXIEES SUR UN SUBSTRAT SEMI-ISOLANT, S'EST REVELE BEAUCOUP PLUS INTERESSANT. LE PRINCIPE D'ACTION DES GAZ, PAR IONOSORPTION ET EFFET DE CHAMP, EST TOUT A FAIT NOUVEAU PAR RAPPORT A CE QUE L'ON CONNAISSAIT JUSQU'A PRESENT. IL EST MONTRE QUE LE PROTOTYPE CAPTEUR PRESENTE UNE SENSIBILITE TRES EXPLOITABLE AU DIOXYDE D'AZOTE. CETTE SENSIBILITE EST D'AUTANT PLUS GRANDE QUE LA COUCHE D'INP EST FINE ET PEU DOPEE. IL EST PROPOSE UN MODELE THEORIQUE DE L'ACTION DU GAZ MELANT LES ASPECTS D'EQUILIBRE CHIMIQUE ET DE PHYSIQUE DU SOLIDE. DES STRUCTURES FONCTIONNANT SUR LE MEME PRINCIPE SONT PROPOSEES, L'UNE D'ENTRE ELLES POURRAIT PERMETTRE UN AJUSTEMENT ELECTRIQUE DE LA SENSIBILITE.

Solid state fermentation, popularly abbreviated as SSF, is currently investigated by many groups throughout the world. The study of this technique was largely neglected in the past in European and Western countries and there is now a high demand for SSF, meaning in food, environment, agricultural, phannaceutical and many other biotechnological applications. It gives me satisfaction to note that the importance of this technique was realised at my department way back in 1975 since then, our team has put concentrated efforts on developing this technique. xvii Foreword Advances in Solid State Fermentation Foreword M. PUYGRENIER Agropolis Valorisation, Avenue d' Agropolis, 34394 Montpellier Cedex 5, France. On the name of the Scientific Community, I would like to express the wish that this International Symposium on SSF should be successful. Solid State Fermentation is part of biotechnology research. It consists on seeding solid culture medium with bacteria or fungi (filamentous or higher) and on producing, in this medium (solid components and exudates) metabolites and high value products. In fact, this process is very old. In older industries such the food and agricultural, this technique has been extensively used. An example of this is the production of pork sausages and Roquefort cheese. Pharmaceutical industry could make extensive use of SSF in the production of secondary metabolites of many kinds and development in this direction is soon expected.

Book excerpt: The Cambridge Handbook of Engineering Education Research is the critical reference source for the growing field of engineering education research, featuring the work of world luminaries writing to define and inform this emerging field. The Handbook draws extensively on contemporary research in the learning sciences, examining how technology affects learners and learning environments, and the role of social context in learning. Since a landmark issue of the Journal of Engineering Education (2005), in which senior scholars argued for a stronger theoretical and empirically driven agenda, engineering education has quickly emerged as a research-driven field increasing in both theoretical and empirical work drawing on many social science disciplines, disciplinary engineering knowledge, and computing. The Handbook is based on the research agenda from a series of interdisciplinary colloquia funded by the US National Science Foundation and published in the Journal of Engineering Education in October 2006.

Book excerpt: The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed. Flexoelectricity has relevance to biological (living) systems and can also offer possibilities for technical applications. The basics of these two interdisciplinary fields are also summarized.
