Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A humorous and very personal guide written by Bill Bailey about his favourite British birds, complete with drawings, notes and cartoons by the comedian himself. 'When herons are spooked they have a habit of vomiting as a defence. Half-digested pieces of eel and water vole skull on your head is not a good look. Just so you know.' Bill Bailey's wonderfully charming and informative book on the birds he loves is now available as a handy, easy-to-carry pocket paperback. Packed with the comedian's observations, illustrations and sketches, this edition is perfect for birdwatching expeditions, with new information for proper twitchers, including: · A 'British Birds' checklist · A list of the best birdwatching sites in the UK · Suggestions of bird spotting equipment · Information about joining a birdwatching club Bailey takes us on a journey around the British Isles, zooming in on those birds that enthuse him the most. Whether it's what they eat, where they fly to or how they communicate, these birds are always fascinating, and he introduces us to their weird and wonderful ways in a manner that is always entertaining. If you're a parent who'd like to appear a bit clever when your child asks you the name of a bird; if you want to find a new and healthy hobby that takes you outdoors; or whether, quite simply, you want to understand a bit more about our natural environment and have a laugh at the same time, this is the companion book to have. Funny and insightful, and positively crackling with energy, knowledge and wit, this beautiful paperback will delight Bailey's fans, birds as well as those who fancy a bit of armchair escapism. Alongside music and stand-up, one of Bailey's favourite pastimes is birdwatching, which he has been doing since he was a child in the West Country. His fondest memories are of family outings with parents, grandparents and cousins, ticking the birds off in his little Observer's Book of Birds. As he has said about those formative years, 'birdwatching gave a purpose to the day and a love of the natural world which has carried on into my adult life'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Birds: Descriptions of All the Commoner Species, Their Nests and Eggs The object of this book is to make as easy as limits of space permit the recognition of all the British species, their nests and eggs, except the rarest. The descriptions have been written with an eye to the requirements of the non-specialist observer, and, if the instructions on p. Viii are followed, they should prove adequate for practical purposes. Descriptions of the female bird and of the young are given only when these differ markedly from the adult male. Like wise seasonal changes of plumage are ignored unless marked enough to make a description necessary for identification. The descriptions and measurements of eggs follow for the most part those of the Rev. F. C. R Jourdain in the British Bird Book. Complete descriptions of nests have yet to be written, the range of material used by particular species being much greater than the standard works would lead one to suppose. The descriptions here given will, however, suffice for purposes of identification. The short notes on migration and distribution, and other information as to time of laying, &c., are introduced solely to aid identification by showing when and where the species and their eggs are to be found. Limitations of space make it obviously impossible to give anything but the strict minimum of information necessary for this purpose. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the intriguing world of the names of British birds. Uniquely the book examines in detail the wide range and meaning of local and common names, the derivation and meaning of the official vernacular English name and thirdly the same analysis of the birds' scientific name. The derivation and meaning of a bird's name gives a fascinating insight into our long and intimate relationship with birds and how much they have been a part of our lives for millennia. The historical derivation of names is given showing how birds ' names reflect our relationship with and changing knowledge of birds. It also notes the way other languages have influenced names. Mis-named birds are identified showing how our increased knowledge of birds has guided us to more accurate names. Many names are linked to myths and tales, often establishing the characteristics we attribute to birds, so many of these are referred to. One key observation about birds is the way they flock. As a result humans use (and sometimes have specifically created) collective nouns for birds. These are given in the book, often providing another insight into the nature of the bird. Alongside this analysis of the names of birds, the book adds many facts and figures giving a greater insight into the bird's life. The interesting facts range from a description of their breeding behaviour, migratory feats, feeding habits, song, physiology and detail of their often extraordinary senses. Notes are given of the relative increase and decrease in bird numbers. Given our very long and intimate connection with birds, inevitably there are many myths, tales and folklore involving them. Many of these are recounted to provide a fuller picture and historical perspective, some linking to the bird's names. Included are Greek and Roman myths as well as much British folklore and superstitions, revealing many fantasies that prevailed for centuries. References to birds in literature abound and some these are quoted to make a specific point. The book includes material on 231 British bird species. Enjoy this book as a serendipity of the fascinating meanings of the diverse names given to British birds, intriguing information on their lives and the many tales about them, true and otherwise.
