It was written by the inspiration of the Holy Ghost by various writers over centuries, culminating with the New Testament written in the years after Jesus Christ. After this the Church decided which books were and which were not truly inspired and compiled the former into the Bible, producing the Vulgate. And here is a history of the Vulgate Gospels.

Book Synopsis Paratexts of the English Bible, 1525-1611 by : Debora Shuger
Download or read book Paratexts of the English Bible, 1525-1611 written by Debora Shuger and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-03-24 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English bibles, from Tyndale's 1525 New Testament to the 1611 King James, feature calendars, woodcuts, maps, chronologies, prayers, philological glosses, inset historical essays, elaborate multi-page diagrams, single-leaf summaries of scripture, prefaces by eminent churchmen, doctrinal notes by leading theologians, a dialogue on predestination, a twelfth-century genealogy of Christ, a ninth-century Jewish chronicle--most widely available, given the hundreds of editions printed between those dates. This book explores this archive, but it also tracks its changes, because while biblical translations remain relatively stable over time, the paratexts cocooning a bible's first printing sometimes mutate or vanish in succeeding editions--and indeed sometimes they migrate to a competing bible. These paratexts, together with their revelatory print histories, disclose a picture of the English Reformation that differs in striking ways from the authorized version.

Book Synopsis The Old Latin Manuscripts of the Gospel of Luke by : Annette Weissenrieder
Download or read book The Old Latin Manuscripts of the Gospel of Luke written by Annette Weissenrieder and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-12-31 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Codex Vercellensis is one of the great treasures of the Vercelli library, containing the four Gospels. Written during the fourth century, it is the oldest remaining Latin manuscript of the Greek New Testament and one of the most important witnesses to the early understanding of the Gospels. In this edition, Weissenrieder and Visinoni provide the Latin text of the work parallel to spectral images, indicating abbreviations, lineation, foliation and staurograms as well as a (reconstructed) critical edition with references to the most important texts of the Old Latin tradition as well as Greek and Syriac manuscripts and a commentary to this unique Latin translation. The analyses involved will be: (1) digital methods, (2) philological and theological, (3) translation theories in antiquity as well as (4) genealogical. The authors call into question assumptions about the text preserved in the manuscript, arguing that it represents an early stage of the Latin Gospels. The manuscript will be examined in light of its wide-ranging cultural and historical context. As such, the project aligns itself methodologically with the field of manuscript studies and attempts to integrate the specialized expertise of various disciplines in the study of a single object.
Book Synopsis The New Cambridge History of the Bible: Volume 2, From 600 to 1450 by : Richard Marsden
Download or read book The New Cambridge History of the Bible: Volume 2, From 600 to 1450 written by Richard Marsden and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-04-26 with total page 1254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the development and use of the Bible from late Antiquity to the Reformation, tracing both its geographical and its intellectual journeys from its homelands throughout the Middle East and Mediterranean and into northern Europe. Richard Marsden and E. Ann Matter's volume provides a balanced treatment of eastern and western biblical traditions, highlighting processes of transmission and modes of exegesis among Roman and Orthodox Christians, Jews and Muslims and illuminating the role of the Bible in medieval inter-religious dialogue. Translations into Ethiopic, Slavic, Armenian and Georgian vernaculars, as well as Romance and Germanic, are treated in detail, along with the theme of allegorized spirituality and established forms of glossing. The chapters take the study of Bible history beyond the cloisters of medieval monasteries and ecclesiastical schools to consider the influence of biblical texts on vernacular poetry, prose, drama, law and the visual arts of East and West.
