Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Mechanical Drawing, Graphic Statics, Machine Design, and Kinematics The questions asked in connection with many Of the problems will be found especially useful in emphasizing important points, and in causing the student to do some thinking and reasoning on his own account. A few of the problems and illustrations were taken from other books, for which due acknowledgement is made. The author is especially indebted to Prof. J. F. Klein, Of Lehigh University, for permission to use many of his illustrations in Machine Design and Graphical Statics Of Mechanism, ' and for many other valuable suggestions and ideas. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Machine Design, Vol. 1: Kinematics of Machinery IN these notes an attempt is made, first, to give, as clearly and concisely as possible, the principles of mechanical motion in such a manner that their application can readily be made to any mechanism for determining the motion of any of its parts; then to show the methods of dealing with such problems as the designer meets daily. Long and tedious discussions have been avoided as far as possible, it is hoped, fully. Subjects such as toothed gearing and couplings are taken up only to the extent of the forms that are in the most common use. But with these subjects, as well as all others, references to what are believed to be the best works in their lines are given frequently. All available works on the subject have been freely consulted, but in no case has any matter which has not become common property by its frequent publication been used without the consent of its author. The exceedingly clear and concise work of Prof. Albert W. Smith, of Stanford University, entitled Machine Design, has been of most valuable assistance throughout. This work includes both kinematics and mechanics. To Prof. Smith, especially, the writer would acknowledge his obligations and express his thanks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Graphical Statics of Mechanism: A Guide for the Use of Machinists, Architects, and Engineers and Also a d104-Book for Technical Schools Since the appearance of Culmann's work, which marked an epoch in the history, of graphical statics, the graphical method has attained pretty general dissemination in engineering circles; its advantages. over the analytical have been recognized more and more, and its further development kept constantly A in view. It is universally applied in the designing of stationary structures, - such as bridges, - for determining the requirements of the individual parts. In machine design, also, the graphical method gives valuable aid in finding the moments to which the machine parts are subjected, and in determining dimensions. Accordingly courses in graphical statics have been introduced in all technical schools. The; graphical method has also been adapted with advantage to certain departments of dynamics, as in Radinger's Dampfmaschinen mit hoher Kolbengeschwindigkeit," and Prolls "Versucht einer graphischen Dynamik." Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Mechanical Drawing and Elementary Machine Design To properly prepare students for advanced machine design it has been found necessary to introduce a course designed to apply the principles of mechanical drawing to the solution of practical problems in machine construction and to familiarize the student with the arrangement and proportions of the most important machines and their details recognized by competent engineers to be the best practice of the present time. It is essential to intelligent study and an economical expenditure of time and labor that, before attempting to design a new machine or improve an old one, the student should post himself with all possible information concerning what has already been done in the same direction. To this end the present work has been prepared. In it we have attempted to show what is the best United States practice in the design and construction of various machines and details of machines, using rules and formulae whenever feasible in working out practical problems. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Course in Graphic Statics: For Students of Mechanical Engineering The purpose of this book is to provide students of mechanical engineering with a brief course in Graphic Statics which will serve when the time to be devoted to this subject is short. Owing to the necessary limitations as to size, the treatment has been restricted mainly to the properties and general uses of the force and equilibrium polygons, these polygons being sufficient for the solution of most of the problems met in practice by mechanical engineers. While the design of trusses is, in general, the duty of the civil engineer, some attention has been given this subject, since such constructions as the Warren girder for an overhead crane, the walking beam of an engine, etc., fall under this classification. Examples, in full detail, have been included, so far as space would admit, since one good example is often of more service in instruction than many pages of theoretical investigation. The discussion of principles, as given in this book, is largely a summary of similar portions of the authors' treatise, "The Elements of Graphic Statics," although there have been some minor additions. With the latter and the examples, the new material comprises nearly two-thirds of the text. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Mechanical Drawing: Introductory to Machine Design; Arranged for Students in the Lewis Institute The T square should be slightly longer than the drawing board and without swivel head. One of good quality pear wood is quite satis factory but more elaborate ones can be had. The head of the T square is apt to swell from a true surface where it slides along the edge of the board. This may be corrected by occasionally scraping away the bowed part. The compasses should be the large size supplied with pencil and pen legs and adjustable needle'point. Large dividers usually come with sets but are not very necessary. A set of bow instruments; bow dividers, bow pen and bow pencil, complete the necessary tools. The last two instruments may be' had combined in one instrument whose needle point remains stationary while the pen or pencil leg is twirled around it. This instrument, well made, is, for small circles, preferable to the old type of bow instruments. The pen usually called the right line pen should be about six inches long and with spring blade but no hinge. The catalogs of makers of, and dealers in, drawing instruments offer considerable information regarding the construction and care of instruments. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Graphical Analysis: A d104 Book on Graphic Statics This book has been developed from notes and blue prints prepared by the writer and used in his classes at the University of Illinois. Certain additional material has been added, a part of which has been briefly presented in a number of articles con tributed by the writer to the technical press. The notes referred to above were modeled after a set prepared by Dr. N. C. Ricker, several years before, to whom the writer is greatly indebted. Many additional problems might have been added and the discussion greatly extended. This is especially true of Chapters IV and VII to X inclusive. However, it has been thought best to keep the book to smaller proportions, and the writer believes that a thorough mastery of the constructions and solutions here presented will give the student an excellent grasp of the subject. The object has been to deal with the analysis of stresses rather than with design or the computation of loads. Nevertheless it has seemed desirable to give some attention to the determination of loads, and Chapter IX has been devoted almost exclusively to design. Material and ideas have, of course, been drawn from many sources. The writer is especially indebted to Prof. C. R. Clark for assist ance in connection with the early part of the work and to Prof. L. H. Provine for encouragement and constructive criticism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in engineering precision have tracked with technological progress for hundreds of years. Over the last few decades, precision engineering has been the specific focus of research on an international scale. The outcome of this effort has been the establishment of a broad range of engineering principles and techniques that form the foundation of precision design. Today’s precision manufacturing machines and measuring instruments represent highly specialised processes that combine deterministic engineering with metrology. Spanning a broad range of technology applications, precision engineering principles frequently bring together scientific ideas drawn from mechanics, materials, optics, electronics, control, thermo-mechanics, dynamics, and software engineering. This book provides a collection of these principles in a single source. Each topic is presented at a level suitable for both undergraduate students and precision engineers in the field. Also included is a wealth of references and example problems to consolidate ideas, and help guide the interested reader to more advanced literature on specific implementations.
