This book was released on 2007 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study combines a descriptive and theoretical presentation of Kɔnni, a Gur language of northern Ghana. It presents an Optimality Theory analysis of the entire phonological system. The descriptions are separated from the formal analyses in order to facilitate use by both descriptivists and theoreticians.Morphology is described, including the noun class system, reduplicative agentive nouns, noun-adjective complexes, nominal derivations, and various verbal aspectual suffixes. Major sections are included on consonants, vowels, and tone. The volume also includes a brief syntax sketch, co occurrence restrictions, phoneme frequency counts, measurements of segment durations and vowel formants, and seven appendices of data. Selected notes of interest:? Some phonology is limited to only certain noun classes.' The 9-vowel ATR vowel system and diphthongization are integrally related.' Certain vowels assimilate only across consonants having the same place feature. ? Tonal perturbations require four different underlying representations for different nouns which have a surface [LH] tone.' True tonal polarity is distinct from dissimilation.' Two cases of syntax-phonology interface are demonstrated.Michael Cahill (Ph.D., linguistics, The Ohio State University, 1999) has been with SIL since 1982, and worked on site with Kɔnni speakers from 1986 to 1993. He was a member of the LSA's Committee on Endangered Languages and their Preservation from 2001-2003, chairing it in 2003. He is an adjunct faculty member of the University of Texas at Arlington and of the Graduate Institute of Applied Linguistics and is currently based in Dallas as the International Linguistics Coordinator of SIL.

Book excerpt: This volume is the first in what hopefully will be a growing set of edited volumes and monographs concerning Niger-Congo comparative studies. This first volume addresses matters that are relevant to the entire East Benue-Congo family as well as the particular branches Kainji, Plateau, and Bantoid. In the case of Bantoid, the particular focus is on Grassfields and the Grassfields-Bantu borderland, though other Bantoid subgroups are referenced. The potential topics for comparative studies among these languages are numerous, but this volume is dedicated to presentations on nominal affixes, third person pronouns, and verbal extensions. A forthcoming volume will provide some results of reconstructions and lexicostatistics in Cross River, exploratory reconstructions in Southern Jukunoid, and reconstructions in Ekoid-Mbe and Mambiloid.

Book excerpt: Phonology: Critical Concepts, the first such anthology to appear in thirty years and the largest ever published, brings together over a hundred previously published book chapters and articles from professional journals. These have been chosen for their importance in the exploration of theoretical questions, with some preference for essays that are not easily accessible.Divided into sections, each part is preceded by a brief introduction which aims to point out the problems addressed by the various articles and show their relations to one another.-

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Murrinhpatha is an Australian Aboriginal language spoken in a region of tropical savannah and tidal inlets on the north coast of the continent. Some 3000 speakers live mostly in the towns of Wadeye and Nganmarriyanga, though they maintain close ties to their traditional lands, totems and spirit ancestors. Murrinhpatha word structure is highly complex, and quite distinct from the better-known Pama-Nyungan languages of central and southern Australia. Murrinhpatha is characterised by prolific compounding, clitic clusters, cumulative inflection, irregular allomorphy and phonological assimilation. This book provides a comprehensive account of these phenomena, giving particular attention to questions of morphological constituency, lexical storage, and whether there is really such thing as a ‘word’ unit.

Book excerpt: Frontiers of Phonology is a collection of essays that present a selective overview of trends in the linguistic analysis of sound structure. The essays are written by specialists from Europe, Canada and the USA and discuss issues from three broad areas of phonology: the nature and representation of phonological features; the role and structure of the skeletal tier and syllable structure; and the competing claims of derivational and declarative approaches to phonology. The book provides a forum for lively discussion of important theoretical topics from various standpoints including metrical and autosegmental phonology, dependency phonology and declarative phonology. The contributors, who are protagonists of these different standpoints, compare notes and show the merits of their different approaches. The essays discussing derivational issues offer an excellent introduction to the area of constraints based phonology, and by covering the phonology of many languages the book provides an understanding of how human languages in general use sound.
