Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Lead and Copper Smelting and Copper Converting IN revising the text of this series of notes on Lead and Copper Smelting and copper Converting I shall make but few changes in the original, even when in the light of later experience I should have stated the matter differently. A postscript will be written to each chapter, giving in as condensed form as possible the pro gress in the science, since these notes were written in 1896. The readers of metallurgical works have given a fair portion of their support to the preceding editions, and I trust that they may find that such contradictions as occur in the newer portions show a healthy search for truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lead Smelting and Refining: With Some Notes on Lead Mining Tms book is a reprint of various articles pertaining especially to the smelting and refining of lead, together with a few articles relating to the mining of lead ore, which have appeared in the Engineering and Mining Journal, chiefly during the last three years; in a few cases articles from earlier issues have been inserted, in view of their special importance in rounding out certain of the subjects treated. For the same reason, several articles from the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining Engineers have been incorporated, permission to republish them in this way having been courteously granted by the Secretary of the Institute. Certain of the other articles comprised in this book are abstracts of papers originally presented before engineering societies, or published in other technical periodicals, subsequently republished in the Engineering and Mining Journal, as to which proper acknowledgment has been made in all cases. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practice of Copper Smelting This work is written to replace my former book, "Modern Copper Smelting," and is intended to describe present metallurgical practice. It consists, in the main, of two classes of material: Studies of actual operations and results at representative plants, supplemented largely by synopses of practising metallurgists; and investigations, comparisons, and discussions of these results, with a view to arriving at their fundamental principles. These two threads are interwoven throughout the entire work, as they cannot be treated separately without sacrifice. The discussion of principles is, however, very brief, owing to the limitations of space, and this book must be regarded as a companion volume to my "Principles of Copper Smelting." Owing to the great developments which the dry metallurgy of copper has experienced during the past twenty years, any attempt to write a complete work upon the subject would result in an encyclopedia rather than a handbook. I have, therefore, believed it best to introduce comparatively few illustrations of processes, but to select these from the best modern practice, and to study them in detail. A book of this nature cannot be written without the cooperation of the owners and managers of a large number of metallurgical plants operating under a variety of conditions, and this assistance has been extended to me in the most liberal manner. Among many sources of information it is proper to designate particularly The Anaconda Copper Mining Company, whose attitude toward the scientific investigator constitutes a personal favor to every student of metallurgy. Basing conclusions upon the treatment of unprecedentedly large quantities of material, handled and recorded in a thoroughly scientific manner, I am thus enabled to offer results that are both authoritative and invaluable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Copper Smelting As is indicated by its title, the book deals mainly with the fundamental principles upon which methods are based, rather than with descriptions of processes or apparatus. These latter subjects may be found adequately treated in our standard works; but the study of the principles upon which the processes depend is accorded so little space, and is distributed through so much other material, in ordinary metallurgical literature, that a treatise devoted to the reasons why instead of to the means bow will fill an existing gap, provided it is written in an acceptable manner.
