This heritage city’s inherent historic charm has always been a major source of attraction. Travellers, poets and philosophers have lavished praise on it, and perhaps no other place is imbued with the richness of ritual and ceremony across the country, as Jaipur is. Among its numerous architectural wonders, the city’s Jantar Mantar (observatory) and Amber Fort have been included in United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s list of world heritage sites. The book elaborates on the lesser known aspects that have contributed to its coveted status of a heritage city. It also offers a glimpse into the lives of people, who have made a difference to this city through their contributions and have aided in making this wonderful city what it is today. The city is an integral element on the itinerary of any global traveller and a worthy venue for a ‘destination wedding’ in one of its numerous forts or palaces. Also in focus is Jaipur’s everevolving image as a new economic hub and a well-equipped modern metropolis. In this well-researched and meticulously documented book, the author presents a comprehensive picture of the city, bringing to light many hitherto unexplored facts that will interest those with a penchant for urban histories, their origin and their evolution. The book has been abundantly illustrated with more than 500 rare, coloured photographs and paintings, and 154 unseen black and white photographs and illustrations, to capture the imagination of a discerning reader.

Book Synopsis History of the Jaipur City by : Ashim Kumar Roy
Download or read book History of the Jaipur City written by Ashim Kumar Roy and published by Manohar Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jaipur is the first planned city of northern India after Mohenjo-daro and the Greek city of Sirkap in Taxila. Its builder was Sawai Jai Singh, the versatile ruler of Amer whose multifarious activities as a statesman, an astronomer and a patron of Hinduism form part of this book. The planning of the city too was perhaps done by Jai Singh himself, ably assisted by a Bengali Brahman, Vidyadhar, who later became his favourite minister. Within a few years of its founding Jaipur became and has since remained the most important city in Rajasthan. From the start it has had a good water supply system. In providing street lighting, medical facilities, higher education, etc., it has kept pace with modern cities of India. By the middle of the 19th century it had become a centre of banking and jewellery trade in north India and by the end of the century a centre of Sanskrit learning. One of the products of the city was Todarmal, who was perhaps the first writer of modern Hindi prose. The city is also an important religious centre. The history of Jaipur could thus he said to be the history of civilization in northern India during the 18th and 19th centuries. This capital story of the birth and growth of the capital of one of the most forward looking states of India should be of interest to the lay reader as well as to specialist.

Book excerpt: A gripping royal saga of charmed lives in a changing world. The Jaipurs were India's mid-century golden couple; its answer to the Kennedys, or Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. Jai and Ayesha, as they were known to friends like Frank Sinatra, Truman Capote and 'Dickie' Mountbatten, entertained lavishly at their magnificent palaces and hunting lodges in Rajasthan--and in the nightclubs of London, Paris and New York. But as the Raj gave way to the new India, Jaipur--the most glamorous and romantic of the princely states--had to find its place. The House of Jaipur charts a dynasty's determination to remain relevant in a democracy set on crushing its privileges. Against the odds, they secured their place at the height of Indian society; but Ayesha would pay for her criticism of Indira Gandhi during the Emergency. From the polo field and politics to imprisonment and personal tragedy, the Jaipurs' extraordinary journey of transformation mirrors the story of a rapidly changing country.

Book Synopsis One Idea, Many Plans by : Sanjeev Vidyarthi
Download or read book One Idea, Many Plans written by Sanjeev Vidyarthi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-11 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Planners tend to promote formal plans as the only game in town while diverse efforts of urban actors shape our cities. Tracking the development of American "neighborhood unit" concept in independent India’s planning practice and literature—from the national level policies to on-the-ground applications in the city of Jaipur—Vidyarthi explains how a host of actors including neighborhood residents, squatters, politicians and developers made different kinds of plans that assimilated the design concept in line with their practical concerns and cultural preferences creating unique variants of neighborhood urbanism over time. One Idea, Many Plans counters misguided characterization of these unforeseen efforts as ‘unauthorized’ by state authorities. It shows how the frequently informal and tacit plans were neither arbitrary actions nor aimless subversions but purposeful future-oriented efforts that shaped the envisaged sociality and spatiality of Indian cities in more meaningful ways than the official master plans promoting planned neighborhoods. Carefully illustrating the different kinds of plans local actors use to guide incremental adaptation, improvement and investment, Vidyarthi offers insights about how we might improve formal plan making. Scholars, students and professional practitioners interested in different regions of the global south would find these lessons useful as a new generation of city design ideas like sustainability and new urbanism gain traction in an increasingly globalized World.
