This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theory and Practice in the Design and Construction of Dock Walls The theoretical portion of this work is arranged in the form of a series of problems, bearing on the subject of dock walls, which, it is to be hoped, will put the engineering student in possession of most of the facts already ascertained and the deductions which have been made therefrom by mathematicians up to the present time. The information from which these problems have been compiled has been chiefly derived from the authorities hereafter mentioned. Some of the geometrical investigations are, however, now published by the author for the first time. The graphic method, heretofore chiefly applied to calculating the strains on roofs and girders, has been freely made use of to render the meaning of the algebraical formulae more thoroughly intelligible. In classifying different structures, dock walls may be said to occupy a situation intermediate between masonry dams and retaining walls, the former being built to support a pressure of water, and the latter to resist a thrust of earth. A dock wall has to perform both these functions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Cylinder Bridge Piers and the Well System of Foundations: Especially Written to Assist Those Engaged in the Construction of Bridges, Quays, Docks, River-Walls, Weirs, Etc The pamphlet having been many years out of print, and several engineers and bridge-builders, here and abroad, having unsolicitedly testified to their having received "much help" from it, the whole subject has been considered de novo; and although this is by no means an exhaustive treatise, it being a kind of miniature cyclopaedia on "Cylinder Bridge Piers and the Well System of Foundations," and as the application of cylinder and well foundations has since been much extended, the hope is cherished that the book may be equally useful to the Engineer, Bridge-Builder, Contractor, and Student. Download or read book Down at the Docks written by Rory Nugent and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2010-02-09 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the opening pages of Moby Dick, Herman Melville called New Bedford, Massachusetts, “the dearest place to live in, in all of New England.” But the old fishing port and manufacturing center—once one of the richest cities in New England—has withered in the modern economy. Its once-prosperous fishermen now struggle with government regulations and fished-out seas, while its empty factories now offer more work to the Fire Department than anyone else. In Down at the Docks, Rory Nugent tells the “riches to rags” story of this iconic American town through beautifully told and unsentimental portraits of its residents. Their lives inform a eulogy to the distinctive ideas, traditions, and culture that is about to disappear from the waterfront.
