Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Early American History Experience and observation have shown that interest must be awakened in the early history of our country, or pupils will have a distaste for history in general; and that, if the early history of America, which is our real history, be understood and appreciated, no difficulty will arise in studying the later development of the country. A pupil who has rightly learned American history has laid a foundation for good reading and has acquired an interest in the history of other nations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Historical Record, and Repertory of Notes and Queries, Vol. 1: Concerning the History and Antiquities of America and Biography of Americans On the 30th of March 1871 the old "Catamount Tavern" House, which had long been the most notable relic of early times in the Center Village of Bennington, Vermont, was burnt to the ground. It had been unoccupied for a short time and the origin of the fire is unknown. The house, which was in a tolerable state of preservation, had been built over a hundred years, having been erected by Captain Stephen Fay, a year or two prior to 1770. It was a wooden building about 44 feet by 34, two stories high, having two high chimneys with high fire places in each story, besides which there was a very large fireplace in the cellar or basement, part of which was used as a wash room, and a cook room as occasion required. The two chimneys are now standing (Autumn of 1871) exhibiting their spacious fire places, with heavy iron cranes in those of the lower story and basement. On the marble mantle of one of the fire places the words "Council room" appear, cut there in early times. On the top of the high sign post was placed the stuffed skin of a Catamount, from which came the name of the house, though in its early days it was, in accordance with the custom of the time, more generally spoken of as "Landlord Fay's." During the period of the early settlement of the state, the house was a great resort for travellers and emigrants; and it was also widely known as the Head Quarters of the settlers in their contest with the New York land claimants. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Magazine of American History, With Notes and Queries, Vol. 16: July-December, 1886 Back of all this is a choice bit of history concerning the land, that will interest the curious. It was a plot granted to Anthony Portuges, a free negro, by Governor Peter Stuyvesant before the English conquest of New York. Governor Nicolls, in 1667, prefaced a series of confirmations of ground briefs in the following language Whereas, there was heretofore, that is to say, in the years 1659 and 1660, several grants made by the Dutch Governor, Petrus Stuyvesant, unto certain free negroes, for several small parcels of land lying upon the Island Manhattas, along the highway, near unto the said Governor's bowery, etc. - Lib. 2, pp. 119 - 132. These confirmations were then entered with minute descriptions, boundaries, etc. There were nine of the plots, and they extended from Art street - now As tor Place - to Prince street. It seems that the ground briefs of the Dutch governors were conveyed in the name both of the States General and the West India Company, and, in View of the phraseology of the third article of the surrender of 1664, were indisputable sources of title either with or without a confirmation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Summary of American History: For the Use of Schools IN attempting to paint a miniature of American History, from works like those of Bancroft and Hildreth and the late invaluable records of the Civil War, the author does not flatter herself that she has maintained a perfect pro portion in the reduced scale. While holding this artistic idea more or less distinctly in mind, she has at least aimed to produce a consistent view of our national annals, omit ting no incident which can claim an essential place in the chain of causes that have made our present condition what it is though many things which, during their brief exist ence, have appealed forcibly to the public eye and ear, must of necessity be crowded out. As the world grows busier, it has more need of little books. the portly folios which entertained the dignified leisure of our grandfathers serve an excellent purpose to adorn our library shelves, but those who are engaged in the pressing business of life must find their information in amore condensed and portable form. The memories of children in schools are crowded with such a mass of de tails, that there is serious danger of an act of general oblivion on escaping from the course of study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American History: Outlines and Notes; A Preference Manual for Teachers and Pupils Before a new vessel is launched even though it be but a steam tug, a demand for its existence should be felt. Before launching this little bark upon the untried sea of popular favor, we inquire, Is it needed? Will it supply a long-felt demand? Is this demand sufficiently pressing to warrant the time and expense required to launch this little bark? From the standpoint of a field educational worker, I do not hesitate to say, after years of observation, that a complete series of outlines to guide in the study of United States History, pointing out the hand of Providence in the discovery, exploration, and colonization of America at just the time and in just the manner prescribed by the Ruler of nations, is greatly needed by our teachers everywhere as an aid in their earnest endeavor to impress upon the mind of the student the eternal principle, The most High ruleth in the kingdom of men and giveth it to whomsoever He will. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Student's American History In the latter part of the fifteenth century Venice had gained control of the lucrative trade between Europe and the Indies. That trade, however, was seriously hampered by the fact that it could not follow a direct and continuous water route. The Isthmus of Suez barred the way. For this reason, the spices, silks, and drugs brought from the far East up the Red Sea had to be unloaded, transported across the desert to the Nile,4 the student's american history. [1487. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of United States History IN writing this book, the author has had in mind the presentation Of the essential facts in our history in a clear, brief manner, with such explanations, by means of maps, pictures, and foot-notes, as the size of the work permitted. In its preparation the pupil's point Of view and peculiar needs have been kept constantly in mind, and the author wishes to express his gratitude to Miss Ginn for her very helpful suggestions and advice. She also kindly drew many of the maps which are inserted in the text, prepared the topical reviews which follow the several divisions of the book, and devised the questions that are printed in Appendix V. He further wishes to express his Obligation to Miss Eva G. Moore for many thoughtful suggestions, and especially for her aid in the preparation Of the bio graphical notes and Of Appendix IV with its accompanying map. Bibliographies Of books of American history which are suitable for school use are now 80 plentiful that it has not seemed wise to add to the bulk of this volume by the insertion Of such lists. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Magazine of American History With Notes and Queries, 1879, Vol. 3 America, a body to which formidable and almost unlimited powers were intrusted; it was authorized to draw upon the treasury, enforce secrecy, and to raise a special force to execute their commands. Notwithstanding these varied duties the pen of Mr. Jay was again called into service, and in December he drafted an. Address Of the people of New York to their constituents, which his son, Mr. William Jay, in his life of his illustrious sire, describes as the most animated and thrilling that ever flowed from his pen. It was signed by the President of the Convention and promulgated on the 23d December. This paper is marked by the severity and dignity of style which belonged to the time, and illustrated by references to biblical and classical history after the fashion of the day. In its compactness of thought and conciseness of expression it has scarcely an equal among the State papers of the period. This address was widely circulated in pamphlet form. Con gress, on the l6th January, acknowledged its receipt, and informed the New York Convention that it contained sentiments highly and generally interesting to the inhabitants of the United States, to whose serious perusal and attention it was earnestly recommended, and ordered that it be translated into the German language and printed at the expense of the colonies.
