Book Synopsis Log of the S.S. The Mrs. Unguentine by : Stanley G. Crawford
Download or read book Log of the S.S. The Mrs. Unguentine written by Stanley G. Crawford and published by Dalkey Archive Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Forty years ago I first linked up with Unguentine and we made love on twin-hulled catamarans, sails a-billow, bless the seas..." So begins the courtship of a certain Unguentine to the woman we know only as "Mrs. Unguentine," the chronicler of their sad, fantastical tale. For forty years, they sail the seas together, alone on a giant land-covered barge of their own devising. They tend their gardens, raise a child, invent an artificial forest--all the while steering clear of civilization. "Log of the S.S. The Mrs. Unguentine" is a masterpiece of modern domestic life, a comic novel of closeness and difficulty, miscommunication and stubborn resolve. Rarely has a book so perfectly registered the secret solitude of marriage, how shared loneliness can result in a powerful bond.

Book Synopsis Letters of a Traveller by : William Cullen Bryant
Download or read book Letters of a Traveller written by William Cullen Bryant and published by IndyPublish.com. This book was released on 1850 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1869. The letters composing this volume were written at various times, during the last sixteen years, and during journeys made in different countries. They contain, however, no regular account of any tour or journey made by the writer, but are merely occasional sketches of what most attracted his attention. The greater part of them have already appeared in print. The author is sensible that the highest merit such a work can claim, if ever so well executed, is but slight. He might have made these letters more interesting to readers in general, if he had spoken of distinguished men to whose society he was admitted; but the limits within which this may be done, with propriety and without offense are so narrow, and so easily overstepped, that he has preferred to abstain altogether from that class of topics. He offers his book to the public, with expectations which will be satisfied by a very moderate success. Due to the age and scarcity of the original we reproduced, some pages may be spotty or faded. This book was released on 2017-05-31 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I never thought I would have reason to say to someone, "Sorry I'm late, it took longer to dismember the goat than originally planned." I was twenty-six years old, worked at a well-paid job, rented a fantastic apartment, and enjoyed a large circle of friends. I had everything, except I didn't. I couldn't shake the feeling I was missing out on the experience of living. Part guidebook on culture and travel, part journey of self-discovery, this travelogue takes you on a backpacking adventure through Nepal and Thailand and provides a firsthand account of one volunteer's experience teaching in a Nepali school and living with a devout Brahmin family. Trek with me through the bamboo forests and terraced mountaintops of eastern Nepal, take a wild river-rafting ride in class IV waters, go on an elephant ride and encounter a charging rhinoceros on jungle walks in Chitwan National Park, sea-kayak the surreal waters of Krabi, and snorkel in the Gulf of Thailand. Join me on some of the scariest bus rides you could imagine, explore beautiful and intriguing temples, experience religious rituals unknown to most Westerners, and visit mind-blowing places not mentioned in your typical travel guides. Notes of a Naive Traveler is a must-read for those interested in learning more about - or wishing to travel to - Nepal and Thailand. I hope it inspires you to see these amazing countries for yourself. Includes 25 photos of Nepal and Thailand, taken by the author during her trip. Winner of a Readers' Favorite 5 Star Medal.

Book Synopsis Three Centuries of Travel Writing by Muslim Women by : Siobhan Lambert-Hurley
Download or read book Three Centuries of Travel Writing by Muslim Women written by Siobhan Lambert-Hurley and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-02 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When thinking of intrepid travelers from past centuries, we don't usually put Muslim women at the top of the list. And yet, the stunning firsthand accounts in this collection completely upend preconceived notions of who was exploring the world. Editors Siobhan Lambert-Hurley, Daniel Majchrowicz, and Sunil Sharma recover, translate, annotate, and provide historical and cultural context for the 17th- to 20th-century writings of Muslim women travelers in ten different languages. Queens and captives, pilgrims and provocateurs, these women are diverse. Their connection to Islam is wide-ranging as well, from the devout to those who distanced themselves from religion. What unites these adventurers is a concern for other women they encounter, their willingness to record their experiences, and the constant thoughts they cast homeward even as they traveled a world that was not always prepared to welcome them. Perfect for readers interested in gender, Islam, travel writing, and global history, Three Centuries of Travel Writing by Muslim Women provides invaluable insight into how these daring women experienced the world—in their own voices.
Book Synopsis Marco Polo Didn't Go There by : Rolf Potts
Download or read book Marco Polo Didn't Go There written by Rolf Potts and published by Travelers' Tales. This book was released on 2009-04-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marco Polo Didn’t Go There is a collection of rollicking travel tales from a young writer USA Today has called “Jack Kerouac for the Internet Age.” For the past ten years, Rolf Potts has taken his keen postmodern travel sensibility into the far fringes of five continents for such prestigious publications as National Geographic Traveler, Salon.com, and The New York Times Magazine. This book documents his boldest, funniest, and most revealing journeys—from getting stranded without water in the Libyan desert, to crashing the set of a Leonardo DiCaprio movie in Thailand, to learning the secrets of Tantric sex in a dubious Indian ashram. Marco Polo Didn’t Go There is more than just an entertaining journey into fascinating corners of the world. The book is a unique window into travel writing, with each chapter containing a “commentary track”—endnotes that reveal the ragged edges behind the experience and creation of each tale. Offbeat and insightful, this book is an engrossing read for students of travel writing as well as armchair wanderers.
