Lecture Notes: Haematology concentrates on providing the required core subject knowledge and has been extensively revised and updated to reflect the considerable advances in the understanding of the molecular biology and pathogenesis of haematological disorders, while continuing the tradition of successfully integrating the physiological, pathological and clinical aspects of haematology. Each chapter begins with a list of learning objectives that identifies the key elements that students need to know, whilst also taking learning to the next level. This new edition includes brief sections on the approaches to investigation and treatment of haematological problems, the underlying mechanisms and relationships concerning lymphomas and other neoplastic diseases of the bone marrow, and the rapidly changing area of bone marrow transplantation. Illustrated in full colour throughout, with new illustrations and photographs of important normal and abnormal blood cells, this eighth edition is a comprehensive guide to haematology and an essential aid for anyone who wants a concise introduction to the subject.

It will assist readers in overcoming the significant challenges involved in clinical and laboratory diagnosis and in providing effective clinical care that makes optimal use of new products, including recombinant factor concentrate. The coverage ranges from hemophilia A and B and von Willebrand disease to rare bleeding disorders such as congenital factor V, factor X, factor XI, and factor XIII deficiency and inherited platelet function disorders. The exceptional attention to rarer conditions is of particular importance given the considerable risk of overlooking them during diagnosis, with potential consequences for disease-related morbidity and mortality. The authors are acknowledged specialists in the field from across the world who have particular expertise in the disorder that they discuss. The book will be of value to hematologists, oncologists, pediatricians, laboratory specialists and technicians, general physicians, and trainees.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Haematology is the study of the disorders of the cellular and coagulable components of the blood. This encompasses a number of important diseases, which include anaemias, leukaemias, and other disorders of the bone marrow and of blood coagulation and haemostasis. This subject is taught as part of a pathology course and relies upon a sound knowledge of both basic science and laboratory practice. This sixth edition of the Lecture Notes on Haematology seeks to integrate the physiological, pathological and clinical aspects of haematology at a level suitable for students and other allied health professionals. In light of the generally overcrowded medical curriculum, this book concentrates, therefore, on the subject's core knowledge. Advanced information, which students need not recall in examinations, is clearly marked and included only where necessary. Each chapter opens with a list of objectives that summarise information. Radically rewritten with new artwork, and more clinically relevant than previous volumes, this 6th edition includes brief sections on approaches to investigating haematological problems.

Book excerpt: A concise full-color review of the mechanisms of blood diseases and disorders – based on a Harvard Medical School hematology course 4 STAR DOODY'S REVIEW! "This is a superb book. Deceptively small, yet packs a wallop. The emphasis on principles instead of practice is welcome....The text is clear, concise, and surprisingly approachable for what could have been a very dense and dry discussion. I could not put this book down and read it entirely in one sitting. When was the last time anyone found a hematology textbook so riveting?"--Doody's Review Service Hematological Pathophysiology is a well-illustrated, easy-to-absorb introduction to the physiological principles underlying the regulation and function of blood cells and hemostasis, as well as the pathophysiologic mechanisms responsible for the development of blood disorders. Featuring a strong emphasis on key principles, the book covers diagnosis and management primarily within a framework of pathogenesis. Authored by world-renowned clinician/educators at Harvard Medical School, Hematological Pathophysiology features content and organization based on a hematology course offered to second year students at that school. The book is logically divided into four sections: Anemias and Disorders of the Red Blood Cell, Disorders of Hemostasis and Thrombosis, Disorders of Leukocytes, and Transfusion Medicine; it opens with an important overview of blood and hematopoietic tissues. Features Succinct, to-the-point coverage that reflects current medical education More than 200 full-color photographs and renderings of disease mechanisms and blood diseases Each chapter includes learning objectives and self-assessment questions Numerous tables and diagrams encapsulate important information Incorporates the feedback of 180 Harvard medical students who reviewed the first draft -- so you know you’re studying the most relevant material possible

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hemoglobin and Hemoglobinologists This volume, Hemoglobin Disorders: Molecular Methods and Protocols, will be introduced with a review of the great milestones in the field, and the scientists responsible for those achievements. The history of hemoglobin can be divided into three periods: the Classical period, the Modern period, and the Post-Modern period. I am inclined to include as the four major members of the classical period Francis Roughton, Quentin Gibson, Jeffries Wyman, and Linus Pauling, not only because of their achievements, but also because of the superb scientists they trained and/or influenced. Francis John Worsely Roughton (1899–1972) (Fig. 1), in his laboratory at Trinity College in Cambridge, England, made the first measurements of the rapid reaction of oxygen with hemoglobin at the millisecond scale, at first by flow-mixing methods and later by flash photolysis. He not only opened an era of molecular research of hemoglobin, but also invented the methodology for fast reactions through the use of laser technology, which was later improved by others so that even faster reactions could be detected. Another contribution of Roughton was the education of Quentin H. Gibson (Fig. 2), his favorite s- dent, who, in his laboratory in Sheffield, continued to expand the horizon of ligand binding to hemoglobin, defining the oxygen binding constants for each of the hemes of hemoglobin. Though this did not, as expected, solve the und- lying mechanism of ligand cooperativity as discussed below, it was nonet- less an important milestone.

Book excerpt: A brilliant and courageous doctor reveals, in gripping accounts of true cases, the power and limits of modern medicine. Sometimes in medicine the only way to know what is truly going on in a patient is to operate, to look inside with one's own eyes. This book is exploratory surgery on medicine itself, laying bare a science not in its idealized form but as it actually is -- complicated, perplexing, and profoundly human. Atul Gawande offers an unflinching view from the scalpel's edge, where science is ambiguous, information is limited, the stakes are high, yet decisions must be made. In dramatic and revealing stories of patients and doctors, he explores how deadly mistakes occur and why good surgeons go bad. He also shows us what happens when medicine comes up against the inexplicable: an architect with incapacitating back pain for which there is no physical cause; a young woman with nausea that won't go away; a television newscaster whose blushing is so severe that she cannot do her job. Gawande offers a richly detailed portrait of the people and the science, even as he tackles the paradoxes and imperfections inherent in caring for human lives. At once tough-minded and humane, Complications is a new kind of medical writing, nuanced and lucid, unafraid to confront the conflicts and uncertainties that lie at the heart of modern medicine, yet always alive to the possibilities of wisdom in this extraordinary endeavor. Complications is a 2002 National Book Award Finalist for Nonfiction.
