Book Synopsis How the Internet Happened: From Netscape to the iPhone by : Brian McCullough
Download or read book How the Internet Happened: From Netscape to the iPhone written by Brian McCullough and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-23 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Library Journal Best Book of the Year Tech-guru Brian McCullough delivers a rollicking history of the internet, why it exploded, and how it changed everything. The internet was never intended for you, opines Brian McCullough in this lively narrative of an era that utterly transformed everything we thought we knew about technology. In How the Internet Happened, he chronicles the whole fascinating story for the first time, beginning in a dusty Illinois basement in 1993, when a group of college kids set off a once-in-an-epoch revolution with what would become the first “dotcom.” Depicting the lives of now-famous innovators like Netscape’s Marc Andreessen and Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, McCullough also reveals surprising quirks and unknown tales as he tracks both the technology and the culture around the internet’s rise. Cinematic in detail and unprecedented in scope, the result both enlightens and informs as it draws back the curtain on the new rhythm of disruption and innovation the internet fostered, and helps to redefine an era that changed every part of our lives.
Download or read book The Truth Machine written by Paul Vigna and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Views differ on bitcoin, but few doubt the transformative potential of Blockchain technology. The Truth Machine is the best book so far on what has happened and what may come along. It demands the attention of anyone concerned with our economic future." —Lawrence H. Summers, Charles W. Eliot University Professor and President Emeritus at Harvard, Former Treasury Secretary From Michael J. Casey and Paul Vigna, the authors of The Age of Cryptocurrency, comes the definitive work on the Internet’s Next Big Thing: The Blockchain. Big banks have grown bigger and more entrenched. Privacy exists only until the next hack. Credit card fraud is a fact of life. Many of the “legacy systems” once designed to make our lives easier and our economy more efficient are no longer up to the task. Yet there is a way past all this—a new kind of operating system with the potential to revolutionize vast swaths of our economy: the blockchain. In The Truth Machine, Michael J. Casey and Paul Vigna demystify the blockchain and explain why it can restore personal control over our data, assets, and identities; grant billions of excluded people access to the global economy; and shift the balance of power to revive society’s faith in itself. They reveal the disruption it promises for industries including finance, tech, legal, and shipping. Casey and Vigna expose the challenge of replacing trusted (and not-so-trusted) institutions on which we’ve relied for centuries with a radical model that bypasses them. The Truth Machine reveals the empowerment possible when self-interested middlemen give way to the transparency of the blockchain, while highlighting the job losses, assertion of special interests, and threat to social cohesion that will accompany this shift. With the same balanced perspective they brought to The Age of Cryptocurrency, Casey and Vigna show why we all must care about the path that blockchain technology takes—moving humanity forward, not backward.

Download or read book Consensusland: A Cryptocurrency Utopia written by Mark Helfman and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ""Entertaining and fascinating. The prose is crisp and engaging, the voice confident, and the plot skillfully imagined."" -- Readers' Favorite Book Review In this blockchain version of Gulliver's Travels, a businessman gets the offer of a lifetime from the tiny, island country of Consensusland, but the catch is troubling: give up everything he knows about business and finance on a leap of faith in cryptocurrency and the power of blockchain. Will he take that leap? Possibly the first fiction book about blockchain, Consensusland infuses a strong narrative with dramatic realism to show readers how the world changes when it uses cryptocurrency, not cash. ""This book answers, in a very clever and engaging way, the question of what a society running on the blockchain could look like. But really, it goes deeper than that, intertwining allegory to capture a lot of the current debate amidst the naysayers that are resistant to change."" -- Misha Yurchenko, author, ""Bullish on Bitcoin""

Book Synopsis Capital as Power by : Jonathan Nitzan
Download or read book Capital as Power written by Jonathan Nitzan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-06-02 with total page 853 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional theories of capitalism are mired in a deep crisis: after centuries of debate, they are still unable to tell us what capital is. Liberals and Marxists both think of capital as an ‘economic’ entity that they count in universal units of ‘utils’ or ‘abstract labour’, respectively. But these units are totally fictitious. Nobody has ever been able to observe or measure them, and for a good reason: they don’t exist. Since liberalism and Marxism depend on these non-existing units, their theories hang in suspension. They cannot explain the process that matters most – the accumulation of capital. This book offers a radical alternative. According to the authors, capital is not a narrow economic entity, but a symbolic quantification of power. It has little to do with utility or abstract labour, and it extends far beyond machines and production lines. Capital, the authors claim, represents the organized power of dominant capital groups to reshape – or creorder – their society. Written in simple language, accessible to lay readers and experts alike, the book develops a novel political economy. It takes the reader through the history, assumptions and limitations of mainstream economics and its associated theories of politics. It examines the evolution of Marxist thinking on accumulation and the state. And it articulates an innovative theory of ‘capital as power’ and a new history of the ‘capitalist mode of power’.
