Book Synopsis Notarii and exceptores by : Hans C. Teitler
Download or read book Notarii and exceptores written by Hans C. Teitler and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-01-16 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 411 AD an ecclesiastical conference was held in Carthage under the presidency of Flavius Marcellinus, tribunus et notarius. On that occasion exceptores and notarii ecclesiastici acted as shorthand writers. Thus at this conference we meet three species of one genus at different stages of their development: a tribunus et notarius, a high imperial official who, despite his title, probably did not know how to write shorthand; exceptores, minor civil servants working in public offices who were certainly stenographers at the time and notarii ecclesiastici, ecclesiastical bureaucrats whose task at the Carthaginian conference was to assist the exceptores with their work, but who at other times were more like tribuni et notarii. With the situation in 411 AD as a starting point an attempt is made to sketch the role and significance of notarii and exceptores in the Roman Empire, from the Early Principate to circa 450 AD.
Book Synopsis Leo the Great and the Spiritual Rebuilding of a Universal Rome by : Susan Wessel
Download or read book Leo the Great and the Spiritual Rebuilding of a Universal Rome written by Susan Wessel and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-11-30 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leo the Great was a major figure of the late Roman world whose life and work were profoundly intertwined with the political crisis of his day. As the western empire gradually succumbed to the advancing barbarian kingdoms, Leo understood that the papacy needed to expand its authority in order for the church to survive the demise of the political system. This book argues that his achievement was to transform the church not only in the practical level of administrative organization, but in the more fluid realm of thought and idea. The secular Rome that was crumbling was replaced with a Christian, universal Rome that he fashioned by infusing his theology with humanitarian ideals.
Book Synopsis The Acts of Early Church Councils Acts by : Thomas Graumann
Download or read book The Acts of Early Church Councils Acts written by Thomas Graumann and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Acts of Early Church Councils Acts examines the acts of ancient church councils as the objects of textual practices, in their editorial shaping, and in their material conditions. It traces the processes of their production, starting from the recording of spoken interventions during a meeting, to the preparation of minutes of individual sessions, to their collection into larger units, their storage and the earliest attempts at their dissemination. Thomas Graumann demonstrates that the preparation of 'paperwork' is central for the bishops' self-presentation and the projection of prevailing conciliar ideologies. The councils' aspirations to legitimacy and authority before real and imagined audiences of the wider church and the empire, and for posterity, fundamentally reside in the relevant textual and bureaucratic processes. Council leaders and administrators also scrutinized and inspected documents and records of previous occasions. From the evidence of such examinations the volume further reconstructs the textual and physical characteristics of ancient conciliar documents and explores the criteria of their assessment. Reading strategies prompted by the features observed from material textual objects handled in council, and the opportunities and limits afforded by the techniques of 'writing-up' conciliar business are analysed. Papyrological evidence and contemporary legal regulations are used to contextualise these efforts. The book thus offers a unique assessment of the production processes, character and the material conditions of council acts that must be the foundation for any historical and theological research into the councils of the ancient church.
Book Synopsis Rulers, Nomads, and Christians in Roman North Africa by : Brent D. Shaw
Download or read book Rulers, Nomads, and Christians in Roman North Africa written by Brent D. Shaw and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The studies collected in this volume cover three broad areas of the history of North Africa as part of the Roman Empire. Studies devoted to the history of 'political institutions' are followed by ones that detail aspects of interactions between nomad and sedentarist communities in the African provinces. The book concludes with two studies on African christianity. In all of these, special attention is given to the indigenous institutions, economies and beliefs that informed the confrontation between 'African' and 'Roman'. The studies in general argue for a strongly 'interactionist' approach to historians' reconstruction of the history of the period and the region - a perspective that would emphasise the continuous conflict between the two world of African and Roman.

Book Synopsis Das Konzil von Chalcedon und die Kirche by : Sandra Leuenberger-Wenger
Download or read book Das Konzil von Chalcedon und die Kirche written by Sandra Leuenberger-Wenger and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-07-01 with total page 635 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Das Konzil von Chalcedon und die Kirche Sandra Leuenberger-Wenger offers a new perspective on the council of Chalcedon, analyzing the rich material of its acts. Leuenberger-Wenger shows the entanglement of the Christological debate with other fields of conflict concerning the status and authority of different episcopal sees and of monasticism in the church. The study emphasizes the importance of the traditionally neglected second part of the council with its canons and resolutions and argues that these regulations had a deep impact on the structures of the church as well as on the reception of the council and its definition of faith. The evaluation of a wide range of sources places the refusal of the definition of faith in the broader context of the transformation processes of the Roman Empire in Late Antiquity and the rejection of an increasingly institutionalized Byzantine Church.
