Book excerpt: "A hilarious and moving story of unconventional entrepreneurialism, passion, and guts." --Danny Meyer, CEO of Union Square Hospitality Group; Founder of Shake Shack; Author of Setting the Table Original recipes by J. Kenji López-Alt of The Food Lab and Stella Parks of BraveTart James Beard Award-winning founder of Serious Eats Ed Levine finally tells the mouthwatering and heartstopping story of building--and almost losing--one of the most acclaimed and beloved food sites in the world. In 2005, Ed Levine was a freelance food writer with an unlikely dream: to control his own fate and create a different kind of food publication. He wanted to unearth the world's best bagels, the best burgers, the best hot dogs--the best of everything edible. To build something for people like him who took everything edible seriously, from the tasting menu at Per Se and omakase feasts at Nobu down to mass-market candy, fast food burgers, and instant ramen. Against all sane advice, he created a blog for $100 and called it...Serious Eats. The site quickly became a home for obsessives who didn't take themselves too seriously. Intrepid staffers feasted on every dumpling in Chinatown and sampled every item on In-N-Out's secret menu. Talented recipe developers like The Food Lab's J. Kenji López-Alt and Stella Parks, aka BraveTart, attracted cult followings. Even as Serious Eats became better-known--even beloved and respected--every day felt like it could be its last. Ed secured handshake deals from investors and would-be acquirers over lunch only to have them renege after dessert. He put his marriage, career, and relationships with friends and family at risk through his stubborn refusal to let his dream die. He prayed that the ride would never end. But if it did, that he would make it out alive. This is the moving story of making a glorious, weird, and wonderful dream come true. It's the story of one food obsessive who followed a passion to terrifying, thrilling, and mouthwatering places--and all the serious eats along the way. Praise for Serious Eater "Read[s] more like a carefully crafted novel than a real person's life." --from the foreword by J. Kenji López-Alt "Wild, wacky, and entertaining...The book makes you hungry for Ed to succeed...and for lunch." --Christina Tosi, founder of Milk Bar "Serious Eater is seriously good!...you'll be so glad [Ed] invited you to a seat at his table." --Ree Drummond, author of The Pioneer Woman Cooks "After decades of spreading the good food gospel we get a glimpse of the missionary behind the mission." --Dan Barber, chef, Blue Hill and Blue Hill at Stone Barns

Book excerpt: Napoleon Hill's classic books, Think and Grow Rich and Law of Success, are timeless classics, enjoyed by people from all walks of life from around the world. Hill's writings were about people were alive at time he wrote. One of the concerns that The Napoleon Hill Foundation has is that, in order to get Millennials and upcoming generations to follow Hill's Success Principles, more recent and relevant stories need to be shared. When you read Journeys To Success, you will read about the personal and intimate stories of how Think and Grow Rich helped the co-authors overcome adversity and defeat, find their purpose, and maintain a Positive Mental Attitude through the many and varied challenges life brings your way. Hill identified 12 Riches of Life and at the top of the list is a Positive Mental Attitude. Purposefully, economic security is the last of the 12 Riches. Other Riches include; sound physical health, harmony in human relationships, freedom from fear, the hope of achievement, the capacity for faith, a willingness to share one's blessings, a labour of love, an open mind on all subjects, self-discipline, and the capacity to understand people. You have between 50,000 - 60,000 thoughts every day. God has given you the power to control your thoughts. Sadly, only about 5-10% of people actually make the effort to purposefully stop negative thoughts and replace them with pre-chosen positive thoughts. You will learn how these authors are able to do that and how you can as well. The main theme behind Hill's book 'Outwitting The Devil' is that Satan wants everyone to be 'drifters', without any burning desire, specific purpose, or meaningful goals. Although W. Clement Stone and the current President of the Napoleon Hill Foundation, James Oleson, thought that a Positive Mental Attitude is the most important Success Principle, Hill and Andrew Carnegie believed that having a specific and singular lifetime purpose was the most essential factor to achieving life success. The authors' stories will spark your imagination and encourage you to discover what you were created to do with your skills, talents, and abilities. You will hear about the powerful life-changing possibilities of a mastermind group, and it is our hope that you take action to recruit the people you need to help you make steady progress towards your goals. Once you know your specific purpose, and have recruited mastermind partners who will work in perfect harmony with you, you must demonstrate Applied Faith by taking action on a consistent basis over a long period of time. In most cases, you will not know every twist, turn, and obstacle along your upcoming journey and so it takes faith in yourself, your purpose and your plans to do something about it. Often, the best approach is Ready - Fire - Aim. Using this process, you take small steps and correct as you receive feedback until you are aiming at, and heading for, your target dead on. Waiting to know everything and eliminating all fears before taking action usually results in no action ever being taken. You are going to learn how important Going The Extra Mile has been for the authors and what they did to demonstrate that Success Principle to achieve their goals. Andrew Carnegie was a BIG supporter of Going The Extra Mile and he practiced it in his own life, starting with nothing, becoming the 3rd wealthiest person who ever lived, and then giving away 90% of his fortune. Going The Extra Mile is a Principle that does not apply to simply working for money. It applies in every area of your life including being a spouse, parent, friend, son or daughter. When you apply it every single day in every area of your life, whether you feel like it or not, you will become a person of character and value to the people closest to you.

Book excerpt: In an industry littered with great characters and extraordinary personalities, Joe Hobbs stands out as one of the whisky world’s most colourful and interesting entrepreneurs, a man who packed more into each decade of his life than most people manage in a lifetime. Whilst individual episodes and activities of his life are quite well known, his fascinating and wide-ranging full life story has not been told before, despite the fact Joe features in Whisky Magazine’s list of ‘Top 100 Most Influential Whisky Figures’ of all time. Not Your Average Joe tells the fascinating story of how the son of a bankrupt English farmer rose to be one of the leading figures in the history of the Scotch whisky industry, making two fortunes and losing one along the way. The book explains Joe’s pioneering exploits as one of the first military aviators during WW1; his controversial rum-running activities into the USA during Prohibition in the 1920s; his leading role in designing and building the city of Vancouver’s first skyscraper; his rise as one of the leading Scotch whisky ‘barons’; and his pioneering transformation of a derelict 10,000 acre Scottish Highland estate into the UK’s first cattle ranch during Britain’s ‘battle for beef’ in the lean years after WW2.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An engrossing autobiographical exploration of black masculinity as a mode of racial and verbal performance. In Your Average Nigga, Vershawn Ashanti Young disputes the belief that speaking Standard English and giving up Black English Vernacular helps black students succeed academically. Young argues that this assumption not only exaggerates the differences between two compatible varieties of English but forces black males to choose between an education and their masculinity, by choosing to act either white or black. As one would expect from a scholar who is subject to the very circumstances he studies, Young shares his own experiences as he exposes the factors that make black racial identity irreconcilable with literacy for blacks, especially black males. Drawing on a range of interdisciplinary scholarship in performance theory and African American literary and cultural studies, Young shows that the linguistic conflict that exists between black and white language styles harms black students from the inner city the most. If these students choose to speak Standard English they risk alienating themselves from their families and communities, and if they choose to retain their customary speech and behavior they may isolate themselves from mainstream society. Young argues that this conflict leaves blacks in the impossible position of either trying to be white or forever struggling to prove that they are black enough. For men, this also becomes an endless struggle to prove that they are masculine enough. Young calls this constant effort to display proper masculine and racial identity the burden of racial performance. Ultimately, Young argues that racial and verbal performances are a burden because they cannot reduce the causes or effects of racism, nor can they denaturalize supposedly fixed identity categories, as many theorists contend. On the contrary, racial and verbal performances only reinscribe the essentialism that they are believed to subvert. Scholars and teachers of rhetoric, performance studies, and African American studies will enjoy this insightful volume.

Book excerpt: Somewhere along the way, says Bonnie Thurston, the wild unlikelihood of the Christian message has been reined in and made to fit more conventional categories of thought. That it is good and moral to be Christian we understand. That it is feral and almost uncontrollably countercultural is something that has been largely forgotten or suppressed. This taming has been especially effective in the case of the first gospel. In Maverick Mark, Thurston sets out to rediscover the radicalism of Mark's original message. Thurston focuses on Mark's conception of discipleship, economic justice, and personal lifestyle. She demonstrates that this gospel raises fundamental questions about some common contemporary Christian assumptions. This is an accessible introduction to Mark, ideal for interested adult readers of all kinds, which incorporates the most reliable and up-to-date Scripture scholarship. Bonnie B. Thurston, after years as a university and seminary professor, lives quietly in her home state of West Virginia. She is the author of many books of scripture and theology, including The Spiritual Landscape of Mark and Philippians in the Sacra Pagina series. Her poetry appears frequently in religious periodicals and among her published collections is Belonging to Borders: A Sojourn in the Celtic Tradition.
