Book excerpt: Honey bees (Apis mellifera) are vulnerable to many diseases, including two species of the fungus Nosema, namely Nosema apis and Nosema ceranae. Nosema ceranae appears to be replacing Nosema apis, but its epidemiology, responses to drug treatments, climate, and wintering methods, and impact on colony productivity and survival are poorly understood. This study aimed to determine the seasonal pattern of Nosema abundance in two Alberta locations using indoor and outdoor wintering methods and the impact of Nosema on honey bee colony population and survival. This study also assessed the effects of spring and fall fumagillin treatment on spore abundance and colony productivity and mortality. Colonies that were naturally infected with Nosema had predominantly N. ceranae, but some had both N. ceranae and N. apis. Nosema ceranae had high spore abundance in spring, declining to low levels in the summer and fall. There was no clear pattern for differences in Nosema abundance between locations. Colonies that were wintered indoors had one-fifth the probability of mortality at similar Nosema abundance and more rapid spring population build-up than outdoor-wintered colonies. This suggests that the mitigation of temperature stress associated with indoor wintering reduced the impact of Nosema infections on colonies more than any potential benefits associated with late winter cleansing flights. Consequently, the existing Nosema threshold should be lower for outdoor-wintered colonies than those wintered indoors. Average Nosema abundance in the spring was a significant predictor of end-of-study winter colony mortality, highlighting the importance of spring Nosema monitoring and treatments. Fumagillin treatment in the spring and/or fall reduced Nosema abundance but did not eliminate the infection, making continued monitoring necessary. Honey bee colony population was improved by spring treatment, but not consistently between locations and years, possibly due to the late treatment application at a lower dosage than the label recommends. Previous spring and/or fall fumagillin treatment did not reduce spring Nosema abundance or increase colony population in the following spring. Therefore, to maintain low spring N. ceranae abundance, colonies should be treated in the spring even if treated in the previous fall. Treating with fumagillin in both the spring and fall increased colony survival in one of two years.

However in recent years they have experienced severe population declines in many regions of the northern hemisphere. Although causes of these honey bee declines are not well understood, multiple pressures such as changes in land-use and climate, management issues, and introduced parasites are believed to be responsible. First described in honey bees in 2006 during a period of high colony mortalities, the microsporidian gut parasite Nosema ceranae became of great concern. In this dissertation I investigated the distribution, management, virulence, and inter-specific interactions of this introduced species. First, I described and clarified the multiple pressures believed to influence honey bee health, including N. ceranae, especially in relation to the mysterious phenomenon Colony Collapse Disorder. I then surveyed colonies in Maritime Canada for N. ceranae and the historic honey bee microsporidian Nosema apis. Although both species were present at a regional scale, intensive sampling in Nova Scotia revealed that N. ceranae was highly prevalent compared to the historic congener. Next, I investigated two potential management options for the parasite. Chemotherapy using the fungicide fumagillin reduced N. ceranae spore intensity but had no effect on colony survival, and indoor over-wintering did not reduce spore intensity but was associated with increased colony survivorship in spring. Using a comparative approach, I observed that N. ceranae infection significantly reduced honey bee longevity in the laboratory but did not influence overall colony health or strength in the field.

Although we consider conservation medicine an emerging field, the concept is the result of the long evolution of transdisciplinary thinking within the health and ecological sciences and the better understanding of the complexity within these various fields of knowledge. Conservation medicine was born from the cross fertilization of ideas generated by this new transdisciplinary design. It examines the links among changes in climate, habitat quality, and land use; emergence and re-emergence of infectious agents, parasites and environmental contaminants; and maintenance of biodiversity and ecosystem functions as they sustain the health of plant and animal communities including humans. During the past ten years, new tools and institutional initiatives for assessing and monitoring ecological health concerns have emerged: landscape epidemiology, disease ecological modeling and web-based analytics. New types of integrated ecological health assessment are being deployed; these efforts incorporate environmental indicator studies with specific biomedical diagnostic tools. Other innovations include the development of non-invasive physiological and behavioral monitoring techniques; the adaptation of modern molecular biological and biomedical techniques; the design of population level disease monitoring strategies; the creation of ecosystem-based health and sentinel species surveillance approaches; and the adaptation of health monitoring systems for appropriate developing country situations. New Directions of Conservation Medicine challenges the notion that human health is an isolated concern removed from the bounds of ecology and species interactions. Book excerpt: Honeybees are as small as flies or as large as hornets, nesting in nar row cavities of trees and rocks or in the open on large limbs of trees 30 m above ground. They occur in tropical zones and in the forests of the Ural mountains, they survive seven months of winter and even longer periods of drought and heat. Historically, they lived through a extended time of stagnation in the tropics from the mid-Tertiary, but then experienced an explosive evolution during the Pleistocene, re sulting in the conquest of huge new territories and the origin of two dozen subspecies in Apis mellifera. This vast geographic and ecologic diversification of the genus Apis was accompanied by a rich morphological variation, less on the level of species than at the lowest rank, the subspecies level. Variation being exclusively of a quantitative kind at this first step of speciation, tradi tional descriptive methods of systematics proved to be unsatisfactory, and honeybee taxonomy finally ended up in a confusing multitude of inadequately described units. Effective methods of morphometric-sta tistical analysis of honeybee popUlations, centered on limited areas, have been developed during the last decades. Only the numerical characterization of the populations, together with the description of behavior, shows the true geographic variability and will end current generalizations and convenient stereotypes.
