Book excerpt: This book will be a useful resource for those studying or teaching the management of IP. . . a welcome addition on the reading list for all good IP management courses. Duncan Bucknell, Journal of Intellectual Property Law and Practice This book brings together innovative contributions on the management of intellectual property (IP) and intellectual property rights by an esteemed and multi-disciplinary group of economists, management scientists, accountants and lawyers. Offering a broad and enlightening picture of the measurement and management of IP, the contributors argue that the shift towards a knowledge-based economy has increased the importance of IP and more generally, intangible assets, as a focus for company decision-making behaviour. The book explores these intangible assets, which are driven by investments in R&D, marketing, education and training, management information systems and organizational structure. The inherent risk in the development of such assets born from the involvement of creativity and innovation is also discussed. The Management of Intellectual Property should prove of use to both students of management and managers in the field who have to make decisions with regard to investments in, and the protection of, IP and other intangible assets.

Book excerpt: This open access book reflects aims of the Blue Circular Economy (BCE) project, which focused on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) aiming to create value using circular economy concepts related to products and services within fishing gear recycling in the Northern Periphery and Arctic (NPA) area. Cluster establishment and operation were carried out in collaboration with academia, industry and government agencies following a triple-helix approach. Discarded fishing gear constitutes a large part of marine plastics. Preventing future discharge of fishing gear into the ocean is a vital step in combating plastic pollution. Circular economy is one of the tools in the European Green deal, targeting waste minimisation. Closing the loop for waste fishing nets by transferring them to a resource could be a solution for preventing discharge at sea: exploring this opportunity is at the core of this book.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,3, University of Göttingen, language: English, abstract: Since the past half century we observe a growing importance of Intellectual Property (IP) which is often associated with a shift towards a knowledge-based economy. In knowledgebased economies, IP protection and management have become the highly important element for business success. Intellectual Property is everywhere: it is embedded in daily-needs products, high-tech equipment, technology, as well organizational routines. Having become crucial in modern world, Intellectual Property and knowledge capital, more than physical capital, drive economies of different countries. About 70% of business assets today are intangibles.1 Not less important for economy are small and middle-sized enterprises (SMEs). This strategic sector covers the whole spectrum of economic fields and is a very important contributor to sustainable economic development. Representing over 90% of all business establishments and about half or more of GDP and export shares SME sector is often associated with a ‘backbone’ of most national economies.2 Intellectual Property is increasingly regarded as a valuable resource for individuals, firms and nations, and as a source of competitive advantage.3 Nowadays, companies are exploiting IP rights not only for protection and security of return purposes; they increasingly use them due to strategic reasons. Numerous studies and literatures4 recognized SMEs as an important contributor to innovation. However, there is still a little understanding of how SMEs manage their IP. Existing studies have focused mainly on large firms and, particularly, on patenting activity, and there are still few attempts to bridge all three together: SMEs, Intellectual Property and IP management. The aim of this paper is an analysis of SME’s performance in innovation and the state of SMEs in IP system. For this reason two main questions were formulated: ‘How do SMEs manage their IP?’ and ‘Are SMEs really disadvantaged by their size in the use of IP rights?’ In order to answer the first question, the following aspects were examined: a way of usage different protection methods by SMEs, the reasons why they apply for IP protection and what obstacles SMEs may face in their exploitation of IP system.

Book excerpt: Firm-size is one of several variables within a larger system where technology, institutions, demand, strategic decisions and random processes play central roles in shaping overall economic outcomes (Sutton, 1998). This chapter starts from the premise that the participation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) - and the conditions for their participation - is especially important for small open economies like the Norwegian case where firm demographics are dominated by relatively small companies. The role these firms play in knowledge generation and the problems they meet have implications for the working of the innovation system as a whole and for policies that address these. The chapter draws on some aspects the unresolved ( -able?) small versus big debate which traces back to disparate positions taken by Schumpeter. In this controversy, we are not primarily interested in the headline issue of which size-classes may or may not contribute most to technological progress. The purpose is to explore the role that different size classes play and to consider some implications to the working of the innovation system as a whole. We explore the contribution of the small firm to inventive activity in line with the Schumpeter's early conjecture (Schumpeter, 1912; 1989), and consider problems this set of firms seem to face in managing their intellectual property in the growing 'market for technology', (Arora, Fosuri, Gambardella, 2000).

Book excerpt: Global economic forces underpin political and social issues and have real impacts on the quality of life in local communities, cities, states and regions. In the face of potential volatility, leaders in every ‘place’ concern themselves with how they can ensure local economic resiliency for present and future generations. This book argues for the strategic management of places through intentional public policy that brings together stakeholders from the public, private and nonprofit sectors to create an inclusive and sustainable economic path forward. While many economists and political scientists have proposed one-size-fits-all approaches, this book puts forward a more holistic approach, giving local leaders and policymakers the tools to take inventory of their local contexts and providing case study examples of how to craft public policies that create prosperous and sustainable economic conditions.

Book excerpt: There are two traditional views of the role of intellectual property (IP) within the field of innovation management: in innovation management research, as an indicator or proxy for innovation inputs or outputs, e.g. patents or licensing income; or in innovation management practice, as a means of protecting knowledge. Exploiting Intellectual Property to Promote Innovation and Create Value argues that whilst both of these perspectives are useful, neither capture the full potential contribution of intellectual property in innovation management research and practice. The management of IP has become a central challenge in current strategies of Open Innovation and Business Model Innovation, but there is relatively little empirical work available. Theoretical arguments and empirical research suggest that from both an innovation policy and management perspective, the challenge is to use IP to encourage risk-taking and innovation, and that a broader repertoire of strategies is necessary to create and capture the economic and social benefits of innovation. This book identifies how intellectual property can be harnessed to create and capture value through exploiting new opportunities for innovation. It is organized around three related themes: public policies for IP; firm strategies for IP; and creating value from IP, and offers insights from the latest research on IP strategies and practices to create and capture the economic and social benefits of innovation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of the PhD project I started four years ago at Europa-Kolleg Hamburg. I had the great opportunity to work on it for one year at the European University Institute in Florence and to finalise the oeuvre during my stay with the European Commission's Institute for Prospective Technological Studies in Seville. The subject matter of the book is intellectual property rights, patents in particular, and their process of harmonisation in Europe. At the beginning of the work, the intention was not to focus immediately on one narrow field in the huge realm of intellectual property rights but rather to open my mind in order to capture a broad variety of new ideas and concepts in the book. The work at three different institutes in three different European countries over the period of four years naturally exposed the work to diverging ideas and the exchange of views with many people. This is one reason for the wide spread of topics ordered around the given leitmotif, such as epistemological foundations, political background information,. the protection of biotechnological inventions and the building up process of intellectual property right systems in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. In chapter two I take up Polanyi's differentiation of codifiable and tacit knowledge. Applying these concepts to my own work I realise that this book is only the visible and codified part of knowledge I was able to capture.
