Book excerpt: "The fifth Market Progress Evaluation Report provides information to support on-going tracking of initiative activities designed to promote Ductless Heat Pump (DHP) availability and build consumer and market awareness for DHPs. Data collected through telephone and online surveys with DHP owners and target market households, focus groups and surveys of DHP installers, and in-depth interviews with NEEA and partner utility program staff, Master Installers and DHP supply chain partners informed this report. The report finds a continued upward trend in the number of DHPs installed through the initiative and high levels of satisfaction among households with DHPs installed. DHP installers report increasing awareness of and interest in DHPs among their customers but continue to report barriers associated with lack of familiarity. The report recommends the initiative focus on leveraging word-of-mouth and internet sources to increase familiarity and confidence and continue to expand marketing resources available to utilities, installers and supply chain partners. The report also notes that decreasing utility rebates and increasing interest in DHP for cooling could affect initiative planning in the future. "--Publisher's website (viewed August 9, 2016).

The evaluation concludes that surveyed participants use their DHPs for primary heating, and that nearly 90% express high levels of satisfaction with the performance of DHPs. Over 4,800 DHPs were installed through the Initiative in 2011, a quarter of these installations occurred in rural areas of the region. Over 500 HVAC contractor firms are actively participating in the Initiative, and approximately 800 firms have undergone Initiative orientation. Manufacturer and distributor representatives, interviewed for this evaluation concur that there is healthy competition in the market place which will ensure that installation prices remain fair and reasonable in the long run"--Publisher's website (viewed Dec. 3, 2012).

Book excerpt: "The fourth Market Progress Evaluation Report of the Ductless Heat Pump (DHP) Initiative concludes that the initiative continues to exhibit a positive influence on the market. Key findings include: general consumer awareness of DHPs remains steady since 2013, fifty-two percent of installers perceive increased customer interest in DHPs (up from 43 percent in 2013), customer satisfaction with their DHP is nearly 95 percent, nearly three-quarters of respondents have recommended a DHP to others, and suppliers indicated that the initiative directly influences their marketing efforts. Overall, Master Installers (defined as those that complete orientation and best practices training) install the most units - nearly 40 percent installed more than 20 units in 2014, compared to non-master installers with only 2 percent installing more than 20 units in 2014. Word of mouth appears to be the primary source of information, with eight percent of respondents saying they will definitely purchase a unit, and 85 percent seriously considering a purchase"--Publisher's website (viewed July 27, 2015).

Book excerpt: "This report presents the findings of the Northwest Ductless Heat Pump (DHP) initiative’s sixth market progress evaluation. The research, conducted between Q4 2016 through Q3 2017, measured performance on several market indicators. The study assessed the initiative’s performance on goals to improve DHP affordability and to increase consumer adoption. An online survey of 520 consumers in the target market (homeowners with electric baseboard heat or force air furnaces) returned interesting results. The survey incorporated two choice experiments to measure the relative strength of DHP features for consumer messaging and marketing. The analysis showed that consumers consider the reduction of monthly heating costs by up to 50 percent and the ability to provide cooling as well as heating to be the most compelling reasons to purchase a DHP. The study confirmed that price is the dominant factor in consumer decision-making, indicating that cost is likely to remain a near term barrier"--Publisher's description (viewed October 18, 2017).

The first section focuses on policies for the adoption of renewable energy technologies, the second section covers the evaluation of energy efficiency programs and the final section provides evaluations of energy technology innovations. Environmental concerns, energy availability and political pressure have prompted governments to look for alternative energy resources that can minimize the undesirable effects for current energy systems. For example, shifting away from the conventional fuel resources and increasing the percentage of electricity generated from renewable resources, such as solar and wind power, is an opportunity to guarantee lower CO2 emissions and to create better economic opportunities for citizens in the long run. Including discussions of such of timely topics and issues as global warming, bio-fuels and nuclear energy, the editors and contributors to this book provide a wealth of insights and recommendations for sustainable energy innovations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Managing a major remodel of your home involves learning various aspects of a construction project: permitting; hiring contractors; clarifying what you really mean and want; managing a budget; overseeing quality, avoiding regrets; doing what’s right for yourself and standing up for yourself. It’s a big job. The learning curve is high and often we homeowners don’t get to apply the skills we learned again. In this book, the stories of a couple going through this learning curve is told through the lens of a novice just like a conversation with a homeowner over a cup of tea. What they thought they wanted (a brand new house in modern minimalist style with solar panels and recycled materials) is very different than what they ended up with (remodel of a 90-year-old house in the classic Arts and Crafts style to meet the stringent international building standard called Passive House). What caused this shift? How did they choose the contractor? How did they navigate out of overwhelm of green building choices? How did they manage the relationships? What would they do differently? Was it worth it? This book chronicles the journey by a couple from choosing the location through living in the house after the renovation completion. It wasn’t all about finding smart people and following expert guidance. When expert opinions diverged and they got stuck in analysis paralysis they had to trust their judgment and chose what they felt was right for them. After all, they’ll be living in the house for years after the experts are gone. Reviews for MIDORI HAUS: "Chie Kawahara is a storyteller. Her book, Midori Haus, tells a compelling story in a conversational style about a couple who wanted to remodel an older home that would use as little energy as possible—and was comfortable and healthy to live in. Anyone who has an interest in green building—doing right for oneself and the planet—will find a friend in this book." -Jim Gunshinan, Editor, Home Energy Magazine “Midori Haus serves as a journey of adapting, learning, greening, nurturing, and caring for an old house by renewing the house to address current and future environmental challenges. The narrative is delightfully educational – the design process of achieving the passive house standard will be better understood through these stories and conversations.” -Alison G. Kwok, Ph.D., AIA, CPHC, University of Oregon "The international Passive House standard has gained a deserved reputation as the fastest growing building energy efficiency standard in the world. Unsurprisingly, publications about it have mostly been by and for industry professionals. Midori Haus represents an alternative, introducing readers to Passive House through the eyes of a homeowner undertaking a remodeling project. Chie Kawahara takes readers along on her journey of discovery and remodeling triumph. She makes the process understandable and accessible and readers are given practical tools they can use on their own Passive House projects. There's nothing like a good case study told by the people involved to bring abstract concepts to life. Midori Haus doesn't disappoint." -Elrond Burrell, Architect, CPHD, blogger "In this delightful book, Chie Kawahara describes the process she and her husband went through to purchase a 1920s bungalow and turn it into a state-of- the-art, healthy, green, Passive House. This account of their experiences is highly instructional for anyone considering buying and renovating a house, and it’s a wonderful read!" -Alex Wilson, Founder, BuildingGreen, Inc.

Book excerpt: The power system has often been cited as the greatest and most complex machine ever built, yet it is predominantly a mechanical system. Technologies and intelligent systems are now available that can significantly enhance the overall functionality of power distribution and make it ready to meet the needs of the 21st century. This book explains how sensors, communications technologies, computational ability, control, and feedback mechanisms can be effectively combined to create this new, continually adjusting "smart grid" system. It provides an understanding of both IntelliGridSM architecture and EnergyPortSM as well as how to integrate intelligent systems to achieve the goals of reliability, cost containment, energy efficiency in power production and delivery, and end-use energy efficiency.
