Book excerpt: UPDATED, Nov 24, 10Disasters both natural and accidental have marked the Northwest. More than just curiosities, these stories chronicle events and personal experiences of people who have faced tragedy and loss with courage and an indomitable spirit. Sometimes sad and often inspiring, our stories are always worth knowing about: - It "s hard to imagine how a bucket of glue could bring down an entire city, but in 1889, Seattle "s bustling business district ground to a blazing halt- Harry Truman, owner of Spirit Lake Lodge in Washington, might have had just enough time to turn around and see the eruption of Mount St. Helens before the hot ash buried both him and his lodge - A few days after Christmas in 1978, residents of Gresham, Oregon, living near 157th and Burnside were surprised to see 179 people exiting a DC-8- In 1959, you could park a cargo truck packed with 6.5 tons of explosive materials on a city street and not get so much as a ticket, even if it blew up, as the citizens of Roseburg, Oregon, can testify - In 1949, when Lowell Elementary School in Tacoma shook from a magnitude 7.1 earthquake, an 11-year-old boy saved another child and gave up his own life- The largest mine disaster in Idaho "s history killed 91 miners when a fire broke out in the Sunshine Mine in May 1972- During World War II, few people knew that the Japanese attacked the United States mainland numerous times from 1942 to 1945, including one attack that proved deadly. And so many more incredible, important and true Disasters of the Northwest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Postcolonial Disaster studies literary fiction about crises of epic proportions in contemporary South Asia and Southern Africa: the oceanic disaster in Sri Lanka, the economic disaster in Zimbabwe, the medical disaster in South Africa and Botswana, and the geopolitical disaster in India and Pakistan. Pallavi Rastogi argues that postcolonial fiction about catastrophe is underpinned by a Disaster Unconscious, a buried but mobile agenda that forces disastrous events to narrate themselves. She writes that in disaster fiction, a literary Story and its real-life Event are in constant dialectic tension. In recent disasters, Story and Event are tied together as the urgency to circulate information and rebuild in the aftermath of the disaster dictates the flow of the narrative. As the Story acquires temporal distance from the Event, such as the seventy-three years since the partition of India in 1947, it plays more with form and theme, to expand beyond a tale about an all-consuming tragedy. Story and Event are in a constant dance with each other, and the Disaster Unconscious plays the tune to which they move. Rastogi creates a narratology for postcolonial disaster fiction and brings concepts from Disaster Studies into the realm of literary analysis.

It also includes lists of what to purchase and how to store it, as well as simple excercises to gain confidence in perfoming necessary tasks. Book excerpt: It is fair to say that the arrival of the Great Northern Railroad to Seattle and Puget Sound in 1893 remains the most historically economic event in the Pacific Northwest. James J. Hill's relentless ambition to tap the resources of the Northwestern United States and then the Orient. He put the great engineer, John F. Stevens in charge of finding a pass through the Cascade Mountains of Washington State. This crossing would cause Jim Hill and the Great Northern to continually experience difficulties that cost the railroad unknown fortunes in man-made and natural disasters. Accidents and disasters that would finally culminate in the worst avalanche disaster in this country's history. The Wellington Avalanche is described in this book in the most detailed manner ever published. However, an aspect never before examined, is the story of the Japanese laborer who worked on the Great Northern. It is a sad story in railroad history. It is the story of a number of outstanding businessmen who enhanced their fortune and power by the illegal importation and exploitation of thousands of Japanese. Ruby El Hult, author of "Northwest Disaster" says "Gary's book is a scholarly and well documented story of both the best and the worst of how the northwest grew from struggling logging communities, to diverse cities of aerospace, high technology, and important international port cities.
