Book excerpt: Excerpt from Northern Regions, or a Relation of Uncle Richard's Voyages for the Discovery of a North-West Passage: And an Account of the Overland Journeys of Other Enterprizing Travellers The great interest excited at the present time, for the intrepid adventurers to the Northern Hemi sphere, has induced me to collect a few interesting and entertaining facts from the narrations of the earlier voyagers in those regions, in order to gratify the spirit of 1nqu1ry so desirable in youth. And, while thus informing them of discoveries then made, and transporting them with the bold travellers to regions before unknown, I trust that my endeavburs to combine the useful with the entertaining will not be thrown away, and that my young readers will be impressed with this conviction, that courage, resolution, and perse verance, will support men through toils and. Download or read book Picturing Canada written by Gail Edwards and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2014-07-31 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of children's illustrated books is located within the broad histories of print culture, publishing, the book trade, and concepts of childhood. An interdisciplinary history, Picturing Canada provides a critical understanding of the changing geographical, historical, and cultural aspects of Canadian identity, as seen through the lens of children's publishing over two centuries. Gail Edwards and Judith Saltman illuminate the connection between children's publishing and Canadian nationalism, analyse the gendered history of children's librarianship, identify changes and continuities in narrative themes and artistic styles, and explore recent changes in the creation and consumption of children's illustrated books. Over 130 interviews with Canadian authors, illustrators, editors, librarians, booksellers, critics, and other contributors to Canadian children's book publishing, document the experiences of those who worked in the industry. An important and wholly original work, Picturing Canada is fundamental to our understanding of publishing history and the history of childhood itself in Canada.

Download or read book The Man Who Ate His Boots written by Anthony Brandt and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2011-03-22 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the triumphant end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815, the British took it upon themselves to complete something they had been trying to do since the sixteenth century: find the fabled Northwest Passage. For the next thirty-five years the British Admiralty sent out expedition after expedition to probe the ice-bound waters of the Canadian Arctic in search of a route, and then, after 1845, to find Sir John Franklin, the Royal Navy hero who led the last of these Admiralty expeditions. Enthralling and often harrowing, The Man Who Ate His Boots captures the glory and the folly of this ultimately tragic enterprise.

Book Synopsis The Spectral Arctic by : Shane McCorristine
Download or read book The Spectral Arctic written by Shane McCorristine and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visitors to the Arctic enter places that have been traditionally imagined as otherworldly. This strangeness fascinated audiences in nineteenth-century Britain when the idea of the heroic explorer voyaging through unmapped zones reached its zenith. The Spectral Arctic re-thinks our understanding of Arctic exploration by paying attention to the importance of dreams and ghosts in the quest for the Northwest Passage. The narratives of Arctic exploration that we are all familiar with today are just the tip of the iceberg: they disguise a great mass of mysterious and dimly lit stories beneath the surface. In contrast to oft-told tales of heroism and disaster, this book reveals the hidden stories of dreaming and haunted explorers, of frozen mummies, of rescue balloons, visits to Inuit shamans, and of the entranced female clairvoyants who travelled to the Arctic in search of John Franklin’s lost expedition. Through new readings of archival documents, exploration narratives, and fictional texts, these spectral stories reflect the complex ways that men and women actually thought about the far North in the past. This revisionist historical account allows us to make sense of current cultural and political concerns in the Canadian Arctic about the location of Franklin’s ships.
