Book excerpt: World Strategic Highways provides a detailed examination of approximately 50 of the most important strategic highways in the world. These highways may take the form of roads, railways, rivers and canals, or air and sea routes. They have one thing in common: they are of special significance because, throughout history, they have acted as major trade routes for a number of countries; have military or strategic significance; act to bind a country or countries together; or, in the case of rivers, act as boundaries between two or more countries. They include the Suez and Panama canals, the Rhine and Amazon rivers, the Trans-US Railway, the Khyber Pass and Maputo Corridor, the Silk Road, the Cape sea route and the Pacific sea route. Location maps are provided throughout the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ontario is the most populous province in Canada and perhaps the most complex. It encompasses a range of regions, cities, and local cultures, while also claiming a long-standing pre-eminence in Canadian federalism. The second edition of The Politics of Ontario aims to understand this unique and ever-changing province. The new edition captures the growing diversity of Ontario, with new chapters on race and Ontario politics, Black Ontarians, and the relationship of Indigenous Peoples and Ontario. With contributors from across the province, the book analyses the political institutions of Ontario, key areas such as gender, Northern Ontario, the intricate Ontario political economy, and public policy challenges with the environment, labour relations, governing the GTA, and health care. Completely refreshed from the earlier edition, it emphasizes the evolution of Ontario and key public policy challenges facing the province. In doing so, The Politics of Ontario provides readers with a thorough understanding of this complicated province.

He uses world-wide case studies to show how built areas work and how designers can maintain the identities of different places.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes economic development policy governance in northern Ontario over the past thirty years, with the goal of making practical policy recommendations for present and future government engagement with the region. It brings together scholars from several disciplines to address the policy and management challenges in various sectors of northern Ontario’s economy, including the mining, pulp and paper, and tourism industries, and both small- and medium-sized businesses. Governance in Northern Ontario assesses the role of the provincial government and its economic policy intervention in the region’s economic development. The contributors evaluate the relationship between the provincial and local governments and the business sector, and also looser structures of policy networks, such as those of First Nations and other interested community groups. Focusing on the nature of partnerships between governments and societal interests, Governance in Northern Ontario makes a significant contribution to the theories and practice of public policy governance in socioeconomically disadvantaged regions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis report will be of interest to pavement design engineers in local, state, and federal transportation agencies. Pavement materials, construction, and maintenance engineers will also find it of interest. In addition, it will be of interest to local technology transfer centers and pavement research engineers. This synthesis describes the state of the practice for thin-surfaced pavement project selection and structural design. It does not establish preferential design criteria (e.g., mix design) nor does it systematically evaluate existing design methods. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the conditions in which thin-surfaced pavements are considered appropriate, what thin-surfaced pavement types are considered appropriate for given conditions, and the decision criteria used in their selection. Information for the synthesis was collected by surveying state and local transportation agencies and by conducting a literature search, including foreign resources. Case studies and an extensive collection of survey data are presented.
