This book was released on 1996 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Begins with a literature review on community economic development in general and on forestry-dependent communities. The literature is reviewed in the following terms: the financial market, traditional and non-traditional strategies for development, resource-dependent communities, and government roles and policies in economic development. The review is organised into topics including the role of entrepreneurship, urban community development in Canada, and local industrial development. The next sections examine selected measures of sustainable forestry and community development, and factors involved in northern Ontario community development. Finally, an input-output analytic model is presented for assessing impact on a community of expenditures on investment projects and other activities at the local and provincial level. The analysis is illustrated for a hypothetical case where the output of pulp and paper operations in Kapuskasing, Ontario is valued at 150 million. Economic impact results are supplemented by discussion of some general socio-economic indicators produced by the model.

Book excerpt: Northern Ontario waterways and the land bordering them are the source of many values, among them recreation or logging. A methodology that includes geographic information system (GIS) and field photogrammetry technologies and addresses the operational requirements of resource managers was developed to identify potential areas of conflict between visual and other values and to assist in the development of alternatives for integrated resource management planning efforts. A project was conducted in Thistle Township to the north and west of Thistle Lake and Red Cedar Lake in the North Bay District. An initial GIS assessment of forested areas theoretically visible from the lakes was made and demonstration materials prepared to explain project concepts to stakeholder groups during the values assessment process and to prepare for the field exercise. Interviews were conducted with three key stakeholder groups. Potential conflict areas were identified and a detailed analysis of them was made. This report describes the methods used and provides recommendations on streamlining the process and improving the technology.

This was the 10th symposium in the series, with previous conferences held in 1975, 1985, 1988, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1997, 2000, and 2002. The forty-two papers in these proceedings are organized into five application areas: (1) sustainability, criteria and indicators, and assessment; (2) techniques and decision support for forest planning; (3) forest assessment and planning case studies; (4) fire suppression, fire planning, and fuels management; (5) harvest scheduling; and (6) mill supply and forest product markets.

Book excerpt: Describes a study of a 40-year-old trembling aspen stand to examine how microclimate influences the regeneration of white spruce and trembling aspen. In the study, openings of various sizes were created in the stand and measurements were made of microclimatological parameters and tree growth parameters. Results presented include solar radiation, soil and air temperature, humidity, and soil moisture in the various types of openings; seedling-water relationships; first- and second-year establishment ratios; effectiveness of vegetation control treatments; daytime patterns in stomatal conductance and transpiration; height and diameter growth; leaf area index; and differences in height between trees with pruned and unpruned roots.

This book was released on 1996 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a review of principles and technology of exponential fertilisation and nutrient loading for container stock production, an examination of the growth and nutritional responses of loaded seedlings planted on competitive sites, and information for implementing exponential nutrient loading practices on an operational basis. The loading technique presented improves the competitiveness of containerised seedlings planted on vegetation-rich mixedwood sites by promoting initial growth performance and weed suppression. The approach is based on two new preconditioning practices which promote steady-state luxury consumption of nutrients in seedlings for outplanting.

Book excerpt: Outlines the development and use of a compatible growth and yield model for red pine and white pine stands under a uniform shelterwood silvicultural system in Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario. The model incorporates stand age, residual (post-harvest) basal area, site index, composition index (proportion of pine basal area), and projected age as predictor variables for estimating residual gross merchantable pine volume and for projecting basal area and gross merchantable pine volume growth over a given time period. Model results are presented for periods up to 25 years following uniform shelterwood harvesting and for stand ages of 40 to 130 years. The appendix contains yield curves and yield tables.
