Book Synopsis Tackling problem drug use by : Great Britain: National Audit Office
Download or read book Tackling problem drug use written by Great Britain: National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010-03-04 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are an estimated third of a million problem drug users in England. This report examines progress against three objectives of the Government's new 10-year Drug Strategy: targeting and management of problem drug using offenders; improving the quality and effectiveness of treatment; helping problem drug users re-establish their lives. The Government is spending £1.2 billion in 2009-10 with the objective of bringing down the estimated costs to society of problem drug use of £15 billion a year (90 per cent of which is attributable to drug-related offences such as burglary and theft). But there is no framework in place for evaluating the achievements of the previous 1998-2008 Strategy, which limits Departments' understanding of the overall value for money achieved. A framework for evaluation could draw on the existing individual evaluations of measures in the Strategy and would help assess whether funding is being optimally directed at different strategic objectives. There has been progress: over the period 2004-05 to 2008-09, the number of adults in effective treatment increased from 134,000 to 195,000 and the number of problem drug users completing their treatment free from dependency rose from 6,000 to 15,000. But actions to help drug users re-establish their lives have had limited results. Around 80 per cent of problem drug users claim benefits at a cost over £40 million a year. And a £13 million a year initiative to get drug users into work has not been successful.

Book Synopsis Waste Policy and the Landfill Directive by : Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee
Download or read book Waste Policy and the Landfill Directive written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2005 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 400 million tonnes of waste is produced in England and Wales from industrial, commercial and household sources, with 375 million tonnes produced in England alone. Following on from its previous report on waste management issues (HCP 385-I, session 2002-03, ISBN 0215010876) published in May 2003, the Committee's report focuses on the progress being made to meet targets for recycling, and the impact of the EU Landfill Directive on reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills, particularly in hazardous waste landfill capacity. Findings include that waste policy has a lower public profile than many other environmental issues, and its development is hindered by a lack of quality data. Concerns are raised about the level of hazardous waste that is unaccounted for, following the ending of co-disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste in the same landfill. Government funding for research into new treatment technologies is welcomed, but more investment is needed; and the planning system is a key influence on the country's waste management capacity. The Committee also recommends that the Landfill Tax should be increased to £35 per tonne; and that the introduction of local authority schemes to promote household waste recycling should be left at the discretion of local councils, with variable charging schemes only introduced if this can avoid disadvantaging low-income families.

Book excerpt: *Errata statement - Chapter 4Many Australians and New Zealanders still assume that current animal welfare laws provide animals with sufficient protection from human mistreatment, that cruelty is the exception and that, when exposed, perpetrators are prosecuted. They are wrong on all counts.Animal Law in Australasia, in its 1st edition, highlighted shortcomings in the existing framework and suggested ways in which the law could be improved.
