Book Synopsis Ancient Arms Race: Antiquity's Largest Fortresses and Sasanian Military Networks of Northern Iran by : Eberhard Sauer

This book was released on 2023-03-13 with total page 928 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Which ancient army boasted the largest fortifications, and how did the competitive build-up of military capabilities shape world history? Few realise that imperial Rome had a serious competitor in Late Antiquity. Late Roman legionary bases, normally no larger than 5ha, were dwarfed by Sasanian fortresses, often covering 40ha, sometimes even 125-175ha. The latter did not necessarily house permanent garrisons but sheltered large armies temporarily – perhaps numbering 10-50,000 men each. Even Roman camps and fortresses of the Early and High Empire did not reach the dimensions of their later Persian counterparts. The longest fort-lined wall of the late antique world was also Persian. Persia built up, between the fourth and sixth centuries AD, the most massive military infrastructure of any ancient or medieval Near Eastern empire – if not the ancient and medieval world. Much of the known defensive network was directed against Persia’s powerful neighbours in the north rather than the west. This may reflect differences in archaeological visibility more than troop numbers. Urban garrisons in the Romano-Persian frontier zone are much harder to identify than vast geometric compounds in marginal northern lands. Recent excavations in Iran have enabled us to precision-date two of the largest fortresses of Southwest Asia, both larger than any in the Roman world. Excavations in a Gorgan Wall fort have shed much new light on frontier life, and we have unearthed a massive bridge nearby. A sonar survey has traced the terminal of the Tammisheh Wall, now submerged under the waters of the Caspian Sea. Further work has focused on a vast city and settlements in the hinterland. Persia’s Imperial Power, our previous project, had already shed much light on the Great Wall of Gorgan, but it was our recent fieldwork that has thrown the sheer magnitude of Sasanian military infrastructure into sharp relief.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Using a wide range of epigraphic, archaeological, numismatic, and literary evidence, Northern Italy in the Roman World traces the evolution of Northern Italy from the Bronze Age to Late Antiquity and examines how the Roman state dramatically changed the region. This study on a much-neglected part of the Roman world uses northern Italy as a case study for examining the impact of the Roman empire on areas that it controlled. The book finds that while levels of Roman intervention varied considerably over time, the Roman state greatly influenced both local and transregional developments. This influence is shown to be pervasive and reflected in material ranging from loom weights to social networks and from ritual horse burials to the careers of writers"--

Book Synopsis Changing Townscapes in North Africa from Late Antiquity to the Arab Conquest by : Anna Leone
Download or read book Changing Townscapes in North Africa from Late Antiquity to the Arab Conquest written by Anna Leone and published by Edipuglia srl. This book was released on 2007 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book examines the complex transition of North Africa from the Late Roman period to the Arab conquest, focusing on three provinces: Zeugitana, Byzacena and Tripolitana. In particular, it considers the continuity and transformation of towns, as a result of economic, political and social changes. The period sees the wide diffusion of Christianity, the imposition of Vandal rule and Arianism, the presence of a new Empire and the Arab/Muslim takeover. It is also a period of archaeological and material transition: physically towns changed and classical structures, in particular, decayed and were reused. The evidence considered here encompasses a wide range of material, including publications from 1800 (Italian and French colonial excavations) to modern times. These data form the basis for a detailed review of archaeological evidence in this geographical area and for the analysis of the processes of evolution that characterised North African cities"--

This book was released on 2015-03-26 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new volume of the "Biographical Dictionary of Chinese Women" spans more than 2,000 years from antiquity to the early seventh century. It recovers the stories of more than 200 women, nearly all of them unknown in the West. The contributors have sifted carefully through the available sources, from the oracle bones to the earliest legends, from Liu Xiang's didactic Biographies to official and unofficial histories, for glimpses and insights into the lives of women. Empresses and consorts, nuns and shamans, women of notoriety or exemplary virtue, women of daring and women of artistic or scholarly accomplishment - all are to be found here. The editors have assembled the stories of women high born and low, representing the full range of female endeavor. The biographies are organized alphabetically within three historical groupings, to give some context to lives lived in changing circumstances over two millennia. A glossary, a chronology, and a finding list that identifies women of each period by background or field of endeavor are also provided.
Book Synopsis Guide to Northern Archaeology by : Christian J Thomsen
Download or read book Guide to Northern Archaeology written by Christian J Thomsen and published by . This book was released on 1836-05-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is not less certain that monuments and remains of antiquity, other than literary, have a just claim to be considered as indirect sources for the same historical result." -Christian Thomsen, Guide to Northern Archeology Guide to Northern Archeology (1848) by Christian Thomsen is a comparative history of craftsmanship and technology. Instead of considering the authenticity of individual objects, however, Thomsen looked at the way objects can define the ages of prehistory (stone, bronze, and iron) and he argued for the value of objects as historical sources. The purpose of his book was to explain the comparative methodology he had developed as the Curator of the National Museum of Denmark, while giving credit to the support he received from the Royal Society of Northern Archeology by taking their case to a wider European scholarly audience.
