Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the opening of the first permanent railway in 1833, hundreds of railroad companies have operated in North Carolina. Rail transportation, faster and more efficient than other methods of the era, opened new markets for the products of North Carolina's farms, factories, and mines. Over the years, North Carolina rail companies have ranged in size from well-engineered giants like the Southern Railway to temporary logging railroads like the Hemlock. Cross ties and rails were laid across almost every conceivable terrain: tidal marshes, sand hills, rolling piedmont, and mountain grades. Vulnerable to the turbulent and unregulated economies of the day, few railroad companies escaped reorganizations and receiverships during their corporate lives, often leaving tangled and contradictory histories in their passing.

Traveling backroads and bypassed communities in each of South Carolina's 46 counties, he has captured the world of our grandparents, our parents and, for some of us, our youth. The book is divided according to the type of store or business. Each chapter contains an introduction highlighting a few of the people and places Lassiter encountered during his travels. The county by county index assists you in looking for places of interest. "The history of South Carolina comes alive in these pages in both pictures and words." -Jack Bass, chronicler of the American South and author or co-author of eight books, including The Palmetto State: The Making of South Carolina."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Railroads have been an integral part of North Carolina since the 1850s, allowing goods and people to travel across the state or to other areas of the country. For many years, the main focus of small towns and large cities in the state was the railroad depots. Residents could purchase train tickets, businesses sought to ship or receive goods for market, and kids loved to visit and wave to the passing train crews. During the Christmas season, presents ordered from catalogs would arrive by Railway Express and were delivered to homes across the area. Mail was also delivered by rail to the depots, even if the train did not stop at a particular community. This book hopes to provide rail enthusiasts, local and economic historians, and history lovers in general a look back at the heyday of railroads and how much they affected daily life in North Carolina.

Book excerpt: Their songs insist that the arrival of the railroad and the appearance of the tiny depot often created such hope that it inspired the construction of the architectural extravaganzas that were the courthouses of the era. In these buildings the distorted myth of the Old South collided head-on with the equally deformed myth of the New South."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Cecelski chronicles one of the most sustained and successful protests of the civil rights movement--the 1968-69 school boycott in Hyde County, North Carolina. For an entire year, the county's black citizens refused to send their children to school in protest of a desegregation plan that required closing two historically black schools in their remote coastal community. Parents and students held nonviolent protests daily for five months, marched twice on the state capitol in Raleigh, and drove the Ku Klux Klan out of the county in a massive gunfight. The threatened closing of Hyde County's black schools collided with a rich and vibrant educational heritage that had helped to sustain the black community since Reconstruction. As other southern school boards routinely closed black schools and displaced their educational leaders, Hyde County blacks began to fear that school desegregation was undermining--rather than enhancing--this legacy. This book, then, is the story of one county's extraordinary struggle for civil rights, but at the same time it explores the fight for civil rights in all of eastern North Carolina and the dismantling of black education throughout the South.

This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 1856, the Dunavants had begun building railroads and they would eventually be among the South's prominent railroad contractors. As they migrated from Virginia to North Carolina and Tennessee, they added to those regions new railroads, mills, hotels, golf clubs, dams and tunnels. For 73 years, from 1856 to 1929, their large-scale construction projects contributed substantially to the development of Southside Virginia, Western North Carolina (Morganton, Charlotte, Statesville, Asheville and Blowing Rock), Tennessee (Memphis), and other southern states. The naming of Dunavant Street in Charlotte paid homage to former resident and builder, Henry Jackson Dunavant. In downtown Morganton, Samuel David Dunavant organized Burke County’s first mill (the Dunavant Cotton Mnfg. Co., later known as the Alpine Cotton Mill); its building has been added to the National Historic Register. (2015 Recipient of a History Book Award and a Family History Book Award from the North Carolina Society of Historians)
