Although the Registry cannot provide statewide cancer incidence data, it does provide a good sample of the cancer experience in North Carolina. The central registry will continue to do a periodic death-match, a procedure matching registry patients with the death certificates in the Vital Records Branch. Hospital registrars are notified of patient deaths from their hospital cases, which saves time and effort of Searching for the information on the deaths and allows for cancer deaths to be recorded as soon as possible, thus improving the quality of survival data by keeping it more current.
