Book Synopsis Self Enquiry by : Sri Ramana Maharshi
Download or read book Self Enquiry written by Sri Ramana Maharshi and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-12-04 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present work in prose consists of forty questions with answers covering the entire range of spiritual disciplines required for the gaining of release (moksha). The questioner was Gambhiram Seshayya, one of the early devotees of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi. He was a Municipal Overseer at Tiruvannamalai about 1900. Besides being an ardent Ramabhakta (worshipper of Rama) he was interested in the study and practice of Yoga. He used to read Swami Vivekananda's lectures on the different yoga's as also an English translation of the Rama-gita. For resolving the difficulties which he came across while studying these books and in his spiritual practices, he approached Bhagavan Sri Ramana from time to time. Bhagavan, who was only twenty-one years old, was then living in Virupaksha cave on Arunachala Hill. As he was keeping silent at the time not because of any vow taken but because he was not inclined to talk - he wrote out his answers to Seshayya's questions on bits of paper. These writings over the period 1900-1902 were later copied in a note-book by Seshayya. The material thus gathered was published by Sri Ramanasramam under the little Vichara-sangraham which literally means 'A Compendium of Self-Enquiry.' A digest of the teaching contained in this work was later printed in English bearing the title 'Self-Enquiry'. In that English version, the questions were omitted and the substance of Bhagavan's teaching was given, classifying it in twelve short chapters with appropriate headings. The present English translation is of the entire original text Vichara-sangraham as it is in Tamil. The Vicharasangraham has unique value in the sense that it constitutes the first set of instructions given by Bhagavan in his own handwriting.

Book Synopsis Lost Ski Areas of the Berkshires by : Jeremy K. Davis
Download or read book Lost Ski Areas of the Berkshires written by Jeremy K. Davis and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2018 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Berkshires of Massachusetts have long been known as a winter sports paradise. Over the years, many of these ski areas faded away and are nearly forgotten. Forty-four ski areas arose from the 1930s to the 1970s. The Thunderbolt Ski Trail put the Berkshires on the map for challenging terrain. Major ski resorts like Brodie Mountain sparked the popularity of night skiing with lighted trails. All-inclusive resorts - like Oak n' Spruce, Eastover and Jug End - brought thousands of new skiers into the sport between the 1940s and 1970s. Jeremy Davis of the New England/Northeast Lost Ski Areas Project brings these lost locations back to life, chronicling their rich histories and contributions to the ski industry.
Download or read book MASS MoCA written by and published by Te Neues Publishing Company. This book was released on 2000 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The result of more than a decade of careful planning, designing, and building, the newly opened Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art pays tribute to nearly a century's worth of industry, labor, and commerce. Located in the college town of North Adams in a series of old mill buildings that once housed a textile factory and later an electrical company, MASS MoCA is a stunning example of intelligent, civic-minded architectural gentrification and visionary planning. The story of how MASS MoCA came to be -- from its conception in 1986 to its opening in the summer of 1999 -- is eloquently told in words and pictures in this beautifully designed volume. More than 100 black and white and color photographs document the painstaking transformation of a 19th-century mill complex, listed on the national Historic Register, into a museum that would house the world's largest collection of contemporary art. Museum Director Joseph Thompson offers a fascinating history of the site and his struggles to get the project off the ground, as well as a curatorial essay that reveals how the AIA Award-winning complex blurs the traditional lines between production and exhibition space to offer unique opportunities for artists and visitors alike. A unique and triumphant story of successful interaction between postindustrial concerns and historic preservation. Mill to Museum is a lesson in how architects, artists, citizens and government can work together to transform not only a building-but the very way we experience art and architecture.

Book Synopsis The Boys of St. Joe's '65 in the Vietnam War by : Dennis G. Pregent
Download or read book The Boys of St. Joe's '65 in the Vietnam War written by Dennis G. Pregent and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2019-12-26 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eleven high school friends in idyllic North Adams, Massachusetts, enlisted to serve in Vietnam, and one stayed behind to protest the war. All were from patriotic, working-class families, all members of the class of 1965 at Saint Joseph's School. Dennis Pregent was one of them. He and his classmates joined up--most right out of school, some before graduating--and endured the war's most vicious years. Seven served in the Army, three in the Marine Corps, and one in the Navy. After fighting in a faraway place, they saw the trajectories of their lives dramatically altered. One died in combat, another became paralyzed, and several still suffer from debilitating conditions five decades later. Inspired by his 50th high school reunion, Pregent located his classmates, rekindled friendships, and--together, over hours of interviews--they remembered the war years.
