Book excerpt: This outstanding work is the only modern book devoted to the chick embryo and has been an essential resource for geneticists, molecular and developmental biologists, and other life scientists who use the chick embryo as their research model. This new enlarged and updated second edition is published in response to continuing demand. The text provides a detailed description of development, from fertilization to hatching, with emphasis on the earlier stages though also covering individual organ systems in detail. There are reviews of the more recent molecular research and a new section highlighting the important landmarks in the history of chick embryology which have had an impact on our understanding of developmental processes. The book is beautifully illustrated with 74 text-figures and over 500 photographs, including nearly 200 new scanning electron micrographs. Updated and expanded text to accompany diagrams More than 200 new labelled scanning electron micrographs showing individual tissues in great detail Reviews of recent molecular research Discusses the roles of genes such as Hox genes, BMPs, and sonic hedgehog during early development New sections on genetical anomalies, techniques, and the poultry industry

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past decennia nonhuman primates have been increasingly used for research purposes in various scientific fields. Much interest has been focused on this group of animals in general and on the rhesus monkey in particular because of its close phylo genetic relationship with man. In some fields of research, however, such as embryology and microscopic anatomy, much less attention has been paid to nonhuman primates, probably because of the expense involved in the collection of the extensive material needed. On the other hand, teratological and experimental embryologic studies must be based upon a thorough knowledge of the normal ontogenesis since only in that way can a reliable distinction be made between normal and abnormal or induced develop ment. Each ontogenetic study essentially consists of a comparison of different deve lopmental stages. In most reports dealing with the development of individual organs or their subunits the material used is classified according to the estimated age or the length of the embryos. These criteria, however, are not valid, since considerable varia tion in developmental stage occurs between animals of the same age even between littermates and between animals of the same length. Therefore a method is needed for assigning embryos to successive developmental stages that are defmed on the basis of extemal and internal characteristics. This type of classification was elaborated by Stree ter (1942, 1945, 1948,1951), who arranged human embryos into developmental hori zons numbered XI through XXIII.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rudolf Raff is recognized as a pioneer in evolutionary developmental biology. In their 1983 book, Embryos, Genes, and Evolution, Raff and co-author Thomas Kaufman proposed a synthesis of developmental and evolutionary biology. In The Shape of Life, Raff analyzes the rise of this new experimental discipline and lays out new research questions, hypotheses, and approaches to guide its development. Raff uses the evolution of animal body plans to exemplify the interplay between developmental mechanisms and evolutionary patterns. Animal body plans emerged half a billion years ago. Evolution within these body plans during this span of time has resulted in the tremendous diversity of living animal forms. Raff argues for an integrated approach to the study of the intertwined roles of development and evolution involving phylogenetic, comparative, and functional biology. This new synthesis will interest not only scientists working in these areas, but also paleontologists, zoologists, morphologists, molecular biologists, and geneticists.

In this study, biologists, palaeontologists and anthropologists present overviews of current activity in heterochrony in their disciplines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Refiguring Life begins with the history of genetics and embryology, showing how discipline-based metaphors have directed scientists' search for evidence. Keller continues with an exploration of the border traffic between biology and physics, focusing on the question of life and the law of increasing entropy. In a final section she traces the impact of new metaphors, born of the computer revolution, on the course of biological research. Keller shows how these metaphors began as objects of contestation between competing visions of the life sciences, how they came to be recast and appropriated by already established research agendas, and how in the process they ultimately came to subvert those same agendas. Refiguring Life explains how the metaphors and machinery of research are not merely the products of scientific discovery but actually work together to map out the territory along which new metaphors and machines can be constructed. Through their dynamic interaction, Keller points out, they define the realm of the possible in science. Drawing on a remarkable spectrum of theoretical work ranging from Schroedinger to French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan, Refiguring Life fuses issues already prominent in the humanities and social sciences with those in the physical and natural sciences, transgressing disciplinary boundaries to offer a broad view of the natural sciences as a whole. Moving gracefully from genetics to embryology, from physics to biology, from cyberscience to molecular biology, Evelyn Fox Keller demonstrates that scientific inquiry cannot pretend to stand apart from the issues and concerns of the larger society in which it exists.

Originally published in 1950, this book provides an account of Kerr's travels and discoveries within the Gran Chaco region of South America. The text is divided into two main parts: the first discusses the Pilcomayo Expedition of 1889-91, providing detailed information on the 'Natokoi or Toba Indians', together with their natural environment; the second gives an account of the 1896-7 Lepidosiren Expedition, mainly focusing on Kerr's observations of the South American lungfish. Numerous illustrative figures are also incorporated, including photographs, drawings and maps. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in the Gran Chaco region, anthropology, zoology and the history of science.
