Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The BNVR Test is a unique non-linguistic approach for identifying whether a cognitive (problem-solving) deficit as well as a linguistic deficit exists in individuals with acquired aphasia. Recognising cognitive deficits in terms of problem-solving may be a key factor in understanding why some individuals overcome their communication difficulties better than others. Failure to recognise problem-solving difficulties may lead to unrealistic expectations of therapeutic intervention and thus inappropriate management and goal setting. The BNVR requires the client to solve 10 everyday problems, presented in full-colour photographic format. It is short, requires minimal linguistic input, contains real-life situations and is likely to be suitable for non-English speaking individuals. It will be useful to speech language therapists, occupational therapists and psychologists who need to ascertain whether problem-solving skills are affected and to assist in multi-disciplinary team decision-making in acute and rehabilitation settings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly more and more children with developmental disabilities survive into adulthood. Pediatricians and other clinicians are called upon to care for an increasing number of children with developmental disabilities in their practice and thus there is a need for a practical guide specifically written for paediatricians and primary care clinicians that addresses major concepts of neurodevelopmental pediatrics. In the United States, the specialty training leading to a conjoint board certification by the American Board of Pediatrics and American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, requires a total of 6 years of training (2 years of pediatrics, 1 year of neurology, 18 months of child neurology, 18 months of neurodevelopmental disabilities). As of December 2006, in the US, there were 241 pediatricians and 55 child neurologists certified in the subspecialty of Neurodevelopmental Disabilities. Thus most of the children with developmental disabilities are seen by pediatricians and therefore it is important for these pediatricians to be well informed of common issues in the field. The 60,000 or so pediatricians in the United States (and hundreds more in other countries) are the main target audience for a practical book on neurodevelopmental pediatrics.

This volume brings together a wide range of perspectives on uncertainty, many of the contributors being the principal proponents in the controversy. Some of the notable issues which emerge from these papers revolve around an interval-based calculus of uncertainty, the Dempster-Shafer Theory, and probability as the best numeric model for uncertainty. There remain strong dissenting opinions not only about probability but even about the utility of any numeric method in this context.

Book excerpt: This book aims to present an overview of current research and dominant theories on human attention. It presents a comprehensive review of the current state of theories in the field, including the measurement and neuropsychology of attention. It also discusses the relationship between attention and new media. The title of this book includes the word "today," because the authors sought to address recent trends and potential future directions in the field of human attention. This book is organized into four chapters. The first chapter explores the theoretical models of attention from historical theories to current research. The second chapter analyses the measurements of attention, with particular reference to paradigms that have been used to study visual and auditory attention. The third chapter focuses on two aspects: the neural basis of attention and electrophysiology, distinguishing the different functions of attention. The last chapter considers the interactions between attention and new media, in particular, television, smartphones, computers, and video games. Both the novice and expert will be able to understand and learn much from reading this book. It is aimed at both students and researchers, as well as professionals in healthcare, education, social care, and related fields.
