Book Synopsis Adaptable Architecture by : Robert Schmidt III
Download or read book Adaptable Architecture written by Robert Schmidt III and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-12 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adaptable Architecture provides thought-provoking and inquisitive insights into how we can prolong the useful life of buildings by designing them to be more adaptable, and hence create a more sustainable built environment. The book provides a theoretical foundation counterpointed by the experiences and ideas of those involved in the design and use of buildings. It explains many approaches to designing for change, with lessons from history, and case studies including The Cedar Rapids Public Library, Kentish Town Health Centre and Folkestone Performing Arts Centre, which stretch our thinking beyond the conventional notions of adaptability. The authors reveal the many conditions that make it a complex design phenomenon, by considering the purpose, design and business case of buildings as well as the physical product. Full of summaries, diagrams, reference charts, tables, and photos of exemplar solutions for use as conversational tools or working aids, this book is for any professional or student who wants to research, question, imagine, illustrate - and ultimately design for - adaptation. In addition, further information and resources are available through the Adaptable Futures website www.adaptablefutures.com which includes additional case studies, videos, information about industry events and up-to-the-minute developments.

Book Synopsis Monospace and Multiverse by : Sabine Hansmann
Download or read book Monospace and Multiverse written by Sabine Hansmann and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2020-12-31 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contrast to buildings divided by walls, monospace buildings are determined far less by its shell than by a reciprocal relationship between space and practices, objects, materials, and human bodies. Using the example of such one-room-architectures, this book explores the potential of an actor-network-theory (ANT) approach to space in the field of architecture. Sabine Hansmann focuses on the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in Norwich, England by Foster Associates (1978) to investigate the mutual entanglement of people, objects and building. She traces the work that is necessary in »doing« space and thus suggests a re-conceptualisation of space in architectural theory.

Book Synopsis The Inhabitable Flesh of Architecture by : Marcos Cruz
Download or read book The Inhabitable Flesh of Architecture written by Marcos Cruz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 741 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today’s architecture has failed the body with its long heritage of purity of form and aesthetic of cleanliness. A resurgence of interest in flesh, especially in art, has led to a politics of abjection, completely changing traditional aesthetics, and is now giving light to an alternative discussion about the body in architecture. This book is dedicated to a future vision of the body in architecture, questioning the contemporary relationship between our Human Flesh and the changing Architectural Flesh. Through the analysis and design of a variety of buildings and projects, Flesh is proposed as a concept that extends the meaning of skin, one of architecture’s most fundamental metaphors. It seeks to challenge a common misunderstanding of skin as a flat and thin surface. In a time when a pervasive discourse about the impact of digital technologies risks turning the architectural skin ever more disembodied, this book argues for a thick embodied flesh by exploring architectural interfaces that are truly inhabitable. Different concepts of Flesh are investigated, not only concerning the architectural and aesthetic, but also the biological aspects. The latter is materialised in form of Synthetic Neoplasms, which are proposed as new semi-living entities, rather than more commonly derived from scaled-up analogies between biological systems and larger scale architectural constructs. These ’neoplasmatic’ creations are identified as partly designed object and partly living material, in which the line between the natural and the artificial is progressively blurred. Hybrid technologies and interdisciplinary work methodologies are thus required, and lead to a revision of our current architectural practice.

Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of Architectural Technology by : Jacqueline Glass
Download or read book Encyclopedia of Architectural Technology written by Jacqueline Glass and published by Academy Press. This book was released on 2002-04-03 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constant technological advancements are opening up dramatic new possibilities for the built form; at the same time architects are developing innovative designs which require new techniques to make these ideas reality. The Encyclopedia of Architectural Technology is the first book to specifically address these two issues by providing a comprehensive reference to modern architectural technologies, encompassing all key aspects of construction, structures, environmental design and servicing. The Encyclopaedia features over 180 entries ranging from materials and techniques to notable innovators in architecture and engineering. Each entry includes a brief quick-reference summary followed by a more detailed text and suggestions for further reading. Besides technological terms, entries are included on related topics such as sick building syndrome and sustainability. Key engineers Ove Arup and Ted Happold have dedicated entries, as do a range of ground-breaking architects such as Le Corbusier, Norman Foster, Walter Gropius, Herzog & de Meuron, Oscar Niemeyer, Richard Rogers, Carlo Scarpa, Frank Lloyd Wright, Ken Yeang and many others.
