Without it the ministry becomes formal, the Church cold, the world indifferent. A passion less ministry can never arouse a cold Church, and a cold Church can never witness convincingly to an indifferent world. The Christian Church to-day needs a revival Of praying, preaching, and personal testimony to the intent Of reaching and winning the lost to a living faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. During this time the trend of the writer's conviction has been away from emotional and superficial methods, which are too often thought to be the only possible expression of earnestness and enthusiasm in soul-winning, and toward an entire dependence upon the Spirit to do every phase of the work that has been assigned to Him in the purpose of God. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Human Element in the Making of a Christian: Studies in Personal Evangelism Any vital discussion of personal evangelism ought to be carried on between two individuals alone, if it is to be per sonal; and therein lies the difficulty in writing a book on this subject. We are natually reticent about our inner life and shrink instinctively from revealing those processes by which our spirits have been disciplined and made fit for true fellow ship with God. Nevertheless, we who are Christians need to help people to understand the laws of cause and effect as they apply to Christian experience; we must be able to answer some of the practical questions that are put to us by those who seek reality in the spiritual life and need working principles; and we want, by our counsel, to help and not to hinder those who are within our influence. People do not usually find their way into the kingdom without some personal help. Our Lord spent a large portion of His time in dealing with the personal life of individuals and yet His chosen method has long been neglected by His followers. This little book has been written in the hope that it may help to define the human element in the making of a Chris tian. It does not pretend to deal with that part of the Chris tian life which is hidden with Christ in God, but is concerned chiefly with the human side of Christian experience, the moral situation we have to face in our own hearts, and the personal challenge that we meet in the teachings of Jesus Christ. It is written in the belief that if we have a rational understanding of human nature and its normal reactions we can apply the message of the gospel with more wisdom and help many be wildered or discouraged people to find their heavenly Father. I am sure that he proceeds upon the right line when he lays down as a fundamental the sense of the spiritual underlying the practical. That the Spirit of God strives with men, and that men may heed the Spirit and find God - this is not only good theology but sound psychology, upon which men ought al ways to build in any plans for Chris tian evangelism. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now a classic work in communication of the gospel to all people has been revised and updated to make it even more vital to contemporary needs. J. E. Conant's Every Member Evangelism remains a stirring call to arms to all Christians, a call back to the divine program given by Jesus to evangelize the world. It is a manual of arms as well, showing why and how every church can fully mobilize every member in the service of Christ and his message. In this revision, Roy J. Fish completely updates the language and substitutes new examples more in line with present-day experience. Conant's vision and fervor are intact. Just as Every Member Evangelism was the standard work for the growing church of an earlier day, this new version comes at a time when the need for it has never been greater.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Methods in Sunday-School Work: The New Evangelism Explanatory. The genesis of this book was my desire for the improvement of the Sunday-schools under my immediate care. As a pastor, I found myself pitifully inadequate to meet the requirements of Sunday-school work. It had been my privilege but a few years ago to study in a representative theological seminary, where I covered the full courses of "catechetics," "pastoral theology," etc., yet the training of this representative institution did not "train" relative to the principles, problems, needs and growing demands of this foundation work of the Church, the Bible-school. In parish work, therefore, I found myself in the growing years unequipped, and face to face with the awful alternative that the Sunday-school must be improved or suffer the loss - as the Church at large, for the most part, has suffered for years - of scores of youth. I raised the question, "What can I do?" For suggestion I consulted every known publication on Sunday-school work and methods. These books say many excellent things and can be read with profit, but I found too much of theory, abstract reasoning, and presentation of thought from the view-point of one man for the meeting of practical need. I, therefore, sought through personal visitation and correspondence to learn from the most experienced and successful Sunday-school workers who are now actually in the field and who are doing things, - I sought to learn from them the full descriptions of their actual working methods. A generous response gave a wealth of information. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2007-03 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACE. THE Author of this very practical treatise on Scotch Loch - Fishing desires clearly that it may be of use to all who had it. He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this book has afforded him pleasure in his leisure moments, and that pleasure would be much increased if he knew that the perusal of it would create any bond of sympathy between himself and the angling community in general. This section is interleaved with blank shects for the readers notes. The Author need hardly say that any suggestions addressed to the case of the publishers, will meet with consideration in a future edition. We do not pretend to write or enlarge upon a new subject. Much has been said and written-and well said and written too on the art of fishing but loch-fishing has been rather looked upon as a second-rate performance, and to dispel this idea is one of the objects for which this present treatise has been written. Far be it from us to say anything against fishing, lawfully practised in any form but many pent up in our large towns will bear us out when me say that, on the whole, a days loch-fishing is the most convenient. One great matter is, that the loch-fisher is depend- ent on nothing but enough wind to curl the water, -and on a large loch it is very seldom that a dead calm prevails all day, -and can make his arrangements for a day, weeks beforehand whereas the stream- fisher is dependent for a good take on the state of the water and however pleasant and easy it may be for one living near the banks of a good trout stream or river, it is quite another matter to arrange for a days river-fishing, if one is looking forward to a holiday at a date some weeks ahead. Providence may favour the expectant angler with a good day, and the water in order but experience has taught most of us that the good days are in the minority, and that, as is the case with our rapid running streams, -such as many of our northern streams are, -the water is either too large or too small, unless, as previously remarked, you live near at hand, and can catch it at its best. A common belief in regard to loch-fishing is, that the tyro and the experienced angler have nearly the same chance in fishing, -the one from the stern and the other from the bow of the same boat. Of all the absurd beliefs as to loch-fishing, this is one of the most absurd. Try it. Give the tyro either end of the boat he likes give him a cast of ally flies he may fancy, or even a cast similar to those which a crack may be using and if he catches one for every three the other has, he may consider himself very lucky. Of course there are lochs where the fish are not abundant, and a beginner may come across as many as an older fisher but we speak of lochs where there are fish to be caught, and where each has a fair chance. Again, it is said that the boatman has as much to do with catching trout in a loch as the angler. Well, we dont deny that. In an untried loch it is necessary to have the guidance of a good boatman but the same argument holds good as to stream-fishing...
