Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tracks of the Norfolk and Western Railway snaked through Virginias Shenandoah Valley and the coalfields of West Virginia. For nearly 100 years, the Norfolk and Western brought freight, passengers, and economic vitality to large cities and rural mining towns. At each stop was the depot or station; some stations were large, architecturally ornate structures that represented the muscular energy and romantic era of this great steam railway with its famed J-class engines. In other places there were small wooden depots that depicted the hard-scrabble life of the mining communities, tucked amid steep mountain valleys that were indelibly shaped by the railways presence. Today some of those structures remain, while many disappeared when the railway ceased passenger or other service. The Norfolk and Western eventually merged with the Southern Railway, and though the trains of the Norfolk Southern still run along those same lines, they simply pass by where they used to stop many years ago.

Book excerpt: When two old friends died unexpectedly, Rick Schatzberg spent the next two years photographing the remaining group of a dozen men. Now in their 67th year, they have been close since early childhood. Schatzberg collected vintage photos that tell the story of this shared history and uses them to introduce each individual as they are today. These are paired with large-format portraits which connect the boy to the man. Mixing in text with these images, Schatzberg depicts friendship, aging, loss, and memory as the group arrives at the threshold of old age. The Boys juxtaposes elements of place, personal history, and identity. The people and locale described are a specific product of the mid-20th-century suburban American landscape, but the book’s themes are radically universal.

It also makes even the greatest photographers try just that little bit harder to frame the perfect image. As a result, it's the first thing anyone buys after their camera. Life in 50mm shares the greatest photos - and the personal experiences that led to them - from some of today's leading photographers. It also explains why they chose to reject complicated modern zooms and express themselves through the 50mm prime in the first place.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: East Anglia is an area of England renowned for its wide horizons, vast skies and extensive areas of wetland - a place where the land, sea and sky are beautifully intermingled. Hallam Ashley, a talented professional photographer, was drawn to this unique landscape and the people who lived and worked there and his wonderful documentary photography, dating mostly from the 1940s to the 1960s, is featured in this new book. Traditional crafts and industries were under threat in this period of rapid industrialisation and social change so his stunning images are also important historical documents of a fast-fading way of life. The 140 black-and-white photographs in the book are only a small selection from the archive of Hallam Ashley's photography held by the National Monuments Record (NMR) in Swindon and they range from a flat-capped miller carefully dressing an ancient millstone and a flint-knapper fashioning gun-flints to a small boy admiring a farrier's work and a busy repair shop for wooden carousel horses. Complemented with a personal biography by Hallam Ashley's daughter and an informative introduction by the author, this book will appeal to anyone with an interest in photography, social history and the heritage of East Anglia.

Book excerpt: Credit for the swift unification of Japan following the 1868 overthrow of the Tokugawa shogunate is usually given to the national leaders. Baxter argues that brilliant leadership at the top is not sufficient to explain how regional separatist tendencies and loyalties to the old lords were overcome in the formation of a nationally unified state.
