Book excerpt: Whistlin' Dixie in a Nor'Easter is the story of a sweet Southern belle who leaves her beloved Memphis, Tennessee to follow her husband's dream of becoming the proprietor of a quaint Vermont inn. Leelee Satterfield seemed to have it all: a gorgeous husband, two adorable daughters, and roots in the sunny city of Memphis, Tennessee. So when her husband gets the idea to uproot the family to run a quaint Vermont inn, Leelee is devastated...and her three best friends are outraged. But she's loved Baker Satterfield since the tenth grade, how can she not indulge his dream? Plus, the glossy photos of bright autumn trees and smiling children in ski suits push her over the edge...after all, how much trouble can it really be? But Leelee discovers pretty fast that there's a truckload of things nobody tells you about Vermont until you live there: such as mud season, vampire flies, and the danger of ice sheets careening off roofs. Not to mention when her beloved Yorkie decides to pick New Year's Eve to go to doggie heaven-she encounters one more New England oddity: frozen ground means you can't bury your dead in the winter. And that Yankee idiosyncrasy just won't do. The inn they've bought also has its host of problems: an odor that no amount of potpourri can erase, tacky décor, and a staff of peculiar Vermonters whose personalities are as unique as the hippopotamus collection gracing the fireplace mantle. The whole operation is managed by Helga, a stern German woman who takes special delight in bullying Leelee for her southern gentility. Needless to say, it doesn't take long for Leelee to start wondering when to drag out the moving boxes again. But when an unexpected hardship takes Leelee by surprise, she finds herself left alone with an inn to run, a mortgage to pay, and two daughters to raise. But this Southern belle won't be run out of town so easily. Drawing on the Southern grit and inner strength she didn't know she had, Leelee decides to turn around the Inn, her attitude and her life. In doing so, she makes friends with her neighbors, finds a little romance, and realizes there's a lot more in common with Vermont than she first thought. In this moving and comedic debut, Lisa Patton paints a hilarious portrait of life in Vermont as seen through the eyes of a southern belle readers won't soon forget. A charming fish-out-of-water tale of one woman who learns to stand up for herself-in sandals and snow boots-against the odds.

Book excerpt: 'There's a storm brewing - I can feel it - but it's got nothing to do with the weather.' Shaun Young knew from the start that Evette Minton would be more than the sum of her parts found strewn at sea after a storm, more than just an investigative journalist who'd fallen prey to the ravages of her profession. He found that she had an unconventional approach to life - obsessive and sometimes outside of the law - similar to the way he tackled police work. He identified with her passion for establishing the baseline truth, regardless of personal cost - this is what commitment to a cause looked like. She had been trying to uncover the financial and social injustice of large corporate organisations buying their way into multi-million-pound contracts. But she'd underestimated the power of big money - the deeper she dug, the more elusive the proof became. What started as an objective investigation would become a personal crusade. Rules would be bent for the greater good, her quest the only priority. Friends and colleagues were important only inasmuch as their capacity to help her achieve her mission. It became a lonely road to walk, and the further she went, the more vulnerable and isolated she became - this would ultimately be her downfall.

His is a mission of peace as outlined in the Magi Charter, given to the first Santa by the Child. From humble beginnings following that First Christmas the Santa lineage has been passed down through the ages. This historical sci/fi adventure tells the story of those Santas from the founding of the North Pole and the origin of the ancient elves, to our modern times where the world’s problems effect even those in the secluded complex of the North, and concluding in the distant future which finds Santa and the elves committed to their mission on a galactic scale where Christmas traditions are barely recognizable. In every era those committed to the Mission must find a way to deliver that which is needed most to those most deserving.

Book excerpt: A storm-struck island. A blood-soaked bed. A missing man. In this captivating mystery that's perfect for fans of Knives Out, Senior Investigator Shana Merchant discovers that murder is a family affair. Thirteen months ago, former NYPD detective Shana Merchant barely survived being abducted by a serial killer. Now hoping to leave grisly murder cases behind, she's taken a job in her fiancé's sleepy hometown in the Thousand Islands region of Upstate New York. But as a nor'easter bears down on her new territory, Shana and fellow investigator Tim Wellington receive a call about a man missing on a private island. Shana and Tim travel to the isolated island owned by the wealthy Sinclair family to question the witnesses. They arrive to find blood on the scene and a house full of Sinclair family and friends on edge. While Tim guesses they're dealing with a runaway case, Shana is convinced that they have a murder on their hands. As the gale intensifies outside, she starts conducting interviews and discovers the Sinclairs and their guests are crawling with dark and dangerous secrets. Trapped on the island by the raging storm with only Tim whose reliability is thrown into question, the increasingly restless suspects, and her own trauma-fueled flashbacks for company, Shana will have to trust the one person her abduction destroyed her faith in--herself. But time is ticking down, because if Shana's right, a killer is in their midst and as the pressure mounts, so do the odds that they'll strike again.

Book excerpt: Neptune's Nor'easter, is the story of a severe storm which struck the Western North Atlantic, on November 14th and 15th, in 1962. The storm was unexpected, and the U.S. Weather Bureau did not forecast that it was coming. This unknown nor'easter generated 105-mph winds from a low pressure of 968-millibars, with seas reaching 60-feet in height. It reached out 1,000-miles from its center, and in 48-hours it caused the sinking of six ships and resulted in the death of thirty-six seamen. These losses include the F/V Midnight Sun, a New Bedford scalloper, and her eleven man crew. Captain Louis Doucette, Jr., was aboard the F/V Venus in this storm and was fishing on the Northern Edge of Georges Bank. Although he had weathered three named hurricanes at sea, including the famous 1938 Great New England Hurricane, he always maintained that this storm was the worst heavy weather event he ever experienced, and it was the only time in his 50-year career that he thought he would be lost at sea. During this storm, the F/V Venus, a 74-foot dragger, was "Hove Down" (capsized) at the most dangerous part of Georges Bank, the area between the Cultivator Shoals and Georges Shoal. This part of the fishing bank, 120-miles east of Cape Cod, has charted points that are 9-feet deep under normal conditions, and 3-feet deep in storm conditions. The F/V Venus required 10-feet to float. The book begins and pivots around the recollections of Captain Doucette, but it also encompasses the stories of the other boats and ships that were caught unaware by this monster storm. The death toll could have easily exceeded 200-men, but for the skill and experience of the mariners involved, and the assistance of the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Navy.Today, this storm would be defined by meteorologists as an Extratropical Cyclone with Explosive Cyclogenesis, or in the newly popular definition, as a "Bombogenesis Storm."This book highlights the skill, courage, and tenacity of the men who are called, New Bedford Fishermen.

Book excerpt: A woman's first Christmas on Martha's Vineyard comes with a mysterious surprise gift in a heartfelt novel that “brims with holiday cheer” (Library Journal). In her cozy rented cottage on Chappaquiddick, novelist Annie Sutton is finally following her dream of living on Martha's Vineyard. As she settles in for her first Vineyard winter, a fierce nor'easter brings high winds and deep snow. But the blizzard also brings something unexpected to Annie's front porch: a baby girl in a basket. The note reads: “I named her Bella, after my grandmother. Please help her, because I can't.” Annie has always been grateful for her adoptive parents who raised her as their own. Yet she now hopes to spare little Bella the feelings of abandonment that still haunt her. Rather than take the baby to the police, Annie tries to find the birth mother, giving her a chance to change her mind. But it's not easy keeping a secret in a close-knit island community, especially amid the bustle of Christmas. Before the holiday ends, there will be revelations, rekindled hope, and proof that families—the ones we are born into and the ones we claim for ourselves—are the gifts that truly matter.
