Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report constitutes the main outputs of the project “Pathways to a Nordic food system that contributes to reduced emissions of greenhouse gases and air pollutants”. The overall goals are to present the baseline data regarding the Nordic agricultural sector, its greenhouse gas and ammonia emissions, the regulatory framework and support systems, and conflicts of interest. The report aims to describe pathways to a Nordic food system that contributes to achieving the climate target of below 2 (or 1.5) degrees of warming and the air pollution target of zero exceedance of critical loads and critical levels regarding ammonia emissions. The Nordic region has diverse geological and climatic conditions that make certain types of agricultural production more vulnerable than others. The policy recommendations aim to serve as input to different policies at EU, Nordic and national level.
Book Synopsis Future Nordic Diets: by : Johan Karlsson
Download or read book Future Nordic Diets: written by Johan Karlsson and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Farming is the foundation of our food system. While the prerequisite for farming is a clean environment and a diverse nature, agriculture is currently the cause of major environmental problems, including greenhouse gas and nitrogen emissions. The challenge to protect our environment and feed the world sometimes seem insurmountable, but solutions might be just around the corner. This report describes two food system scenarios for Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden, where the majority of food is produced within the region using organic farming practices and where livestock is mainly fed on grass and by-products not suitable for human consumption. The results show that we could feed the projected Nordic population in 2030 on organic food, mostly grown within the region, while reducing the climate and nitrogen footprints of our food system.
Book Synopsis Cookbook for systems change – Nordic innovation strategies for sustainable food systems by : Halloran, Afton

This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Available online: https://pub.norden.org/nord2020-048/ This cookbook of strategies for change is about the role that a strong public innovation system plays along the pathways towards sustainable food systems. We demonstrate this through a mission approach for deliberate food system transformation that can support people, planet and society. This strategy cookbook will provide the ingredients – templates for developing interventions, guides for how to get started and examples of cross-cutting projects – that you can use to create your own recipes for change. We offer a new, emergent way to work with complex and dynamic systems. The cookbook is intended primarily for national and regional innovation agencies, as the government has both a mandate and more authority than any other entity to lead the change needed to achieve sustainable food systems. However, because innovation ecosystems include a variety of different actors, this strategy cookbook also provides valuable insights into the roles that entrepreneurs and civil society and research organisations can play to cultivate change from the bottom-up.

Book Synopsis The Versatile Farmers of the North by : Victor Condorcét Vinje
Download or read book The Versatile Farmers of the North written by Victor Condorcét Vinje and published by Booktango. This book was released on 2014-01-09 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the largely forgotten and neglected role of the Norwegian yeomen during the constitutional work of 1814. Their political campaigning is related to their increasingly prominent economic position within Norwegian -- and European -- society in the Age of Democratic revolution. The extent to which the ideas of the Enlightenment reached the rural population in this part of Europe, is analyzed along with Nordic topographic issues in general, as well as the radical and libertarian constitutional drafts presented by the yeomen at Eidsvoll in 1814. The role of the new Swedish "revolutionary king", Charles John (Bernadotte) is also discussed in a new light, based on his revolutionary past and his break with Napoleon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unknown to most people, there are innumerable microbial species that accomplish vital ecosystem functions while residing in a suspended state in the troposphere or resting on crop canopies. These microbial species, if utilized properly, can improve agriculture. At the same time, harmful microbes can also devastate crops easily. This new book, Microbiology of the Agricultural Sky, explores a number of microbes present in the agrarian sky and details their identities, roles in nature, and usefulness to crops as well as other biotic factors. The volume first provides an introduction that details the historical aspects of microbes relating to their discovery and identification of their role in agrarian ecosystems. The book then gives detailed explanations of microbes in the atmosphere, with information on the general distribution, spread distance, and intercontinental migration of microbes in the atmosphere. It discusses aeolian dust microbes above agrarian regions and the role of aerial microbes in nutrient dynamics. The book also explains the functions of microbes that reside on crop canopies and the importance of the plant‘s phyllosphere. It looks at microbial flora and how a region‘s bio-geochemical functions affect crops. Also discussed is the role of aerial microbes in inducing epidemics and pandemics among different crops. The final chapter details farm procedures that can be adopted in the outfield and in animal houses and how they impact atmospheric microbes. Key features: Highlights the relevance of the agrarian sky and its microbial component, detailing the wide range of functions that microbes accomplish in the aerospace Presents a timeline of discoveries about aeromicrobiology and the agrarian sky Discusses aerial microbes on crop canopies and their influence on plant pathogens, including beneficial nutrients, need for crop protection, etc. Looks at the microbiology of the agrarian sky and the spread of crop diseases locally and via the intercontinental migration of microbes Discusses farm procedures and their impact on microbes in the troposphere and the agricultural fields beneath it This first-of-its-kind book provides extensive information on microorganisms that can be traced in the agrarian sky and their relevance to agriculture. Book Synopsis Nordic nature – trends towards 2010 by : Marja Pylvänäinen
Download or read book Nordic nature – trends towards 2010 written by Marja Pylvänäinen and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2010 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international target to slow and even halt the decline in biodiversity by the end of 2010 has been included in the Nordic Council of Ministers' Environmental Action Plan for 2009-2012. We already know that this goal will not be reached, in spite of the many actions big and small taken around the Nordic Region to help preserve and protect biodiversity. During the UN International Year of Biodiversity 2010 new goals will be defined and campaigns will be conducted to emphasise the importance of biodiversity to nature and people. The task of conserving biodiversity will also continue after the theme year 2010. The project Nordic nature - trends towards 2010 has presented examples illustrating the threats facing biodiversity together with conservation success stories, and also descriptions of conservation efforts that have not always produced the desired results. These reviews have been published as fact sheets in electronic format on the project's websites in all of the Nordic languages and in English. This publication compiles these published fact sheets, together with a summary of current trends in biodiversity in the Nordic Countries, as part of our region's contribution towards the 2010 biodiversity target and the goal of increasing awareness of the special significance of biodiversity.

Book Synopsis The Role of Agriculture in Climate Change Mitigation by : Lucjan Pawlowski
Download or read book The Role of Agriculture in Climate Change Mitigation written by Lucjan Pawlowski and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-05-07 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to IPCC reports, one of the greatest threats to the Earth ecosystems is climate change caused by the anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases, mostly carbon dioxide, mainly from the combustion of fossil fuels, cement production and land-use change which leads to an excessive temperature rise. Agriculture and forestry are responsible for quiet big emissions of greenhouse gases: CO2, CH4 and N2O, and have significant potential to reduce these emissions mainly through enhancement of CO2 absorption by terrestrial ecosystems. To evaluate the impact of agriculture on climate change, ruminant farming should be also taken into account. These animals emit considerable amounts of methane which has strong greenhouse effects. Methane emissions may be reduced by using appropriate feed for ruminants. Decreasing the meat consumption of these animals can also make an important contribution to reducing methane emissions. The methods for reducing greenhouse gas emissions through appropriate management of terrestrial ecosystems and animal husbandry are widely discussed in The Role of Agriculture in Climate Change Mitigation. The book will be of interest to academics, professionals and policy makers in environmental sciences.
