Book excerpt: This book deals with the transformation of the Arctic from an isolated or a distant region to a member of the global community, vulnerable to global changes, and an area frequently in the very center of the world’s attention. Increased global interest is a potential source of tensions between the need for exploration or exploitation, and the requirements of protection. This context calls for new data, knowledge and information vital for a better understanding of interactions between different systems, as well as developing awareness about the current and potential changes in the future. The objective of the book is to help develop a strategy of adaptation to climate change based on the knowledge and experience of the extremely effective mechanisms which for centuries made survival possible in this region.

Book Synopsis Non-state Actors in the Arctic Region by : Nikolas Sellheim
Download or read book Non-state Actors in the Arctic Region written by Nikolas Sellheim and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-10 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprehensively discusses the role that non-state actors play in the Arctic and assesses the normative role of these actors. Beyond any organised forum, there are actors that have a significant impact on the way the Arctic is developed, adjudicated, managed, perceived, presented and represented. This book complements the literature on non-state actors in international law and international security, world politics and international relations and provides a geographical account of their role for the Arctic. The book content is not limited to a specific discipline, but takes into account different approaches to the topic. This means that it contains three types of contributions: research articles, shorter research notes and commentaries. While the research articles constitute the main body of the work, it is also the research notes which provide an insight into issues related to the topic of the book.

Book Synopsis Arctic Co-operation Programme 2015-2017 by :
Download or read book Arctic Co-operation Programme 2015-2017 written by and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2014-12-08 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arctic region is undergoing rapid change and the challenges this poses are more and more visible. Global climate change has had a huge impact on both the natural environment and the people who live in the Arctic. Glaciers and sea ice are melting due to rising average temperatures, making natural resources more easily accessible. This has consequences – good and bad – for people, society and nature, and also provides new opportunities. New shipping routes and new technology make it possible to extract natural resources from the harsh Arctic terrain and help meet the growing global demand for energy. The Nordic countries would like this potential to be exploited in a manner respectful of the unique and vulnerable Artic nature and environment. It is also important to safeguard the way of life of the Arctic people and provide them with opportunities via a sustainable economic model and the development of a modern welfare state designed to benefit the population as a whole. Since 1996, the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Arctic Co-operation Programme has given rise to several hundred projects, artistic activities and political initiatives on topics ranging from climate change, nature, the environment and sustainable development to health, culture and skills enhancement. These initiatives share one common goal: sustainable development that respects nature and looks after the welfare of the Arctic people. The Arctic Co-operation Programme supplements other Nordic Council of Ministers’ programmes, strategies and initiatives that address issues relevant to the Arctic.

Book Synopsis Arctic Legal Regime for Environmental Protection by : Linda Nowlan
Download or read book Arctic Legal Regime for Environmental Protection written by Linda Nowlan and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2001 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years, concerns have been expressed about environmental issues in the Arctic. While the Arctic region, unlike Antarctica, has been inhabited for thousands of years, it is under unique threat because of its vulnerability toward resource exploitation and the deposition of various airborne pollutants. With its varied populations, and with eight Nations asserting territorial interests, the Arctic needs a careful approach to its protection and development. This report describes the current Arctic environmental legal regime. It also discusses the possibility of negotiating a sustainability treaty for the Arctic with high standards of environmental protection similar to those in the 1991 Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty. It is hoped that this review of the legal and policy contrasts between the Arctic and Antarctic can help in the consideration of future directions for the Arctic legal regime.

Book excerpt: Natural and cultural heritage represent key assets that deliver different kind of benefits to citizens in the Nordic countries. This report illustrates the economic values at stake and discusses the important and inevitable key trade-offs facing decision-makers charged with managing these assests. The report has three goals: to briefly describe existing conservation measures in the Nordic countries, to illustrate the type and magnitude of economic values generated by these measures, and to discuss key trade-offs and policy implications arising from the selection of measures, which lead to welfare impacts depending on the level of human use. The valuation studies reviewed in the report demonstrate real economic values associated with the experiences that natural and cultural heritage provides both in terms of increased welfare and regional economic impacts.
Book Synopsis Nordic Perspectives on the Responsible Development of the Arctic: Pathways to Action by : Douglas C. Nord
Download or read book Nordic Perspectives on the Responsible Development of the Arctic: Pathways to Action written by Douglas C. Nord and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-30 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the multifaceted nature of change in today’s Nordic Arctic and the necessary research and policy development required to address the challenges and opportunities currently faced by this region. It focuses its attention on the recent efforts of the Nordic community to create specialized Centers of Excellence in Arctic Research in order to facilitate this process of scientific inquiry and policy articulation. The volume seeks to describe both the steps that lead to this decision and the manner in which this undertaking as evolved. The work highlights the research efforts of the four Centers and their investigations of a variety of issues including those related to ecosystem and wildlife management, the revitalization resource dependent communities, the emergence of new climate-born diseases and the development of adequate modeling techniques to assist northern communities in their efforts at adaptation and resilience building. Major discoveries and insights arising from these and other efforts are detailed and possible policy implications considered. The book also focuses attention on the challenges of creating and supporting multidisciplinary teams of researchers to investigate such concerns and the methods and means for facilitating their collaboration and the integration of their findings to form new and useful perspectives on the nature of change in the contemporary Arctic. It also provides helpful consideration and examples of how local and indigenous communities can be engaged in the co-production of knowledge regarding the region. The volume discusses how such research findings can be best communicated and shared between scientists, policymakers and northern residents. It considers the challenges of building common concern not just among different research disciplines but also between bureaucracies and the public. Only when this bridge-building effort is undertaken can true pathways to action be established.
