Book excerpt: Norbert Ormai (1813 - 1849) was born into a German aristocratic family in Bohemia with the name Norbert von Auffenberg. In 1840, while serving as a lieutenant in the Imperial Army, he was accused of collaborating with Polish patriots from Galicia. He was arrested and spent seven years imprisoned, which hardened his revolutionary ideals. A proponent of European democracy and liberal reforms, he was sentenced to another fourteen years in 1847. Revolution swept Europe in 1848 and the people demanded pardons of their imprisoned compatriots. Norbert was pardoned by the Imperial government and within months he joined Hungarian uprising. At that time, he changed his name to Ormai (Ormay) as a translation of the German Auffenberg. The leader of the Hungarian Revolution, Lajos Kossuth, commissioned him to organize a rifle regiment. He managed to get thousands of soldiers for the regiment and was gradually promoted to the rank of colonel. Cornered by Imperial forces, he was arrested by General Baron Julius Jacob von Haynau and hanged as a traitor. He was first of the Martyrs of Arad, a group of revolutionary leaders who gave their lives for Hungarian independence and are honored today as founding fathers of the nation. Ormai has many monuments, memorials and honorifics, including being the namesake of Von Ormy, Texas. This book is the English edition of LAJOS BABÓS's Hungarian original. It provides detailed primary and secondary source material of Ormai's life, military career and death.

Book Synopsis Prodesse et delectare by : Norbert Kössinger
Download or read book Prodesse et delectare written by Norbert Kössinger and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-12-02 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Horatian formula prodesse et delectare was extremely influential in the production of texts across various languages and genres. While indeed didactic elements can be attested to in almost any medieval text, and while medieval literature displays a range of possibilities to teach and instruct, the scope of the present volume is more closely focused on explicitly didactic literature. This volume combines contributions that analyse didactic literature in high medieval Europe from different vantage points. They open new perspectives on education as a working principle or legitimizing strategy in the heterogeneous forms of writing intended to convey knowledge. This broad thematic, linguistic and geographical scope enables us to view didactic literature as the universal phenomenon it was and prompts us to understand its influence on many aspects of society in high medieval Europe and beyond. While the contributions explore case studies predominantly from this period of transition and the expansion of the categories of knowledge, they also trace some of these developments into the later Middle Ages to spotlight the lasting influence of high medieval teaching and learning in literature. The way medieval writers combine ‘the pleasant’ with ‘the useful’ is this book’s main question.

Book Synopsis An Awareness of What is Missing by : Jürgen Habermas
Download or read book An Awareness of What is Missing written by Jürgen Habermas and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-11-06 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his recent writings on religion and secularization, Habermas has challenged reason to clarify its relation to religious experience and to engage religions in a constructive dialogue. Given the global challenges facing humanity, nothing is more dangerous than the refusal to communicate that we encounter today in different forms of religious and ideological fundamentalism. Habermas argues that in order to engage in this dialogue, two conditions must be met: religion must accept the authority of secular reason as the fallible results of the sciences and the universalistic egalitarianism in law and morality; and conversely, secular reason must not set itself up as the judge concerning truths of faith. This argument was developed in part as a reaction to the conception of the relation between faith and reason formulated by Pope Benedict XVI in his 2006 Regensburg address. In 2007 Habermas conducted a debate, under the title ‘An Awareness of What Is Missing', with philosophers from the Jesuit School for Philosophy in Munich. This volume includes Habermas's essay, the contributions of his interlocutors and Habermas's reply to them. It will be indispensable reading for anyone who wishes to understand one of the most urgent and intractable issues of our time.

Book Synopsis Violence and Punishment by : Pieter Spierenburg
Download or read book Violence and Punishment written by Pieter Spierenburg and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-08-22 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative book tells the fascinating tale of the long histories of violence, punishment, and the human body, and how they are all connected. Taking the decline of violence and the transformation of punishment as its guiding themes, the book highlights key dynamics of historical and social change, and charts how a refinement and civilizing of manners, and new forms of celebration and festival, accompanied the decline of violence. Pieter Spierenburg, a leading figure in historical criminology, skillfully extends his view over three continents, back to the middle ages and even beyond to the Stone Age. Ranging along the way from murder to etiquette, from social control to popular culture, from religion to death, and from honor to prisons, every chapter creatively uses the theories of Norbert Elias, while also engaging with the work of Foucault and Durkheim. The scope and rigor of the analysis will strongly interest scholars of criminology, history, and sociology, while the accessible style and the intriguing stories on which the book builds will appeal to anyone interested in the history of violence and punishment in civilization.
