Book excerpt: This paper describes the design and operation of a CARS spectrometer and its use to perform accurate temperature measurements in a simple laboratory flat-flame burner. Instrumental sources of systematic error and noise in CARS temperature measurements are discussed. An analysis of the system noise is presented and the use of the measured noise to perform weighted least mean squares fits of experimental and theoretical CARS spectra is discussed. The use of a weighted fit is shown to markedly improve the precision of single pulse CARS temperature measurements. Finally, incorporation of some recent advances in CARS theory which have resulted in more computationally efficient algorithms for calculating theoretical CARS spectra and their effect on the accuracy of temperature measurements are discussed.

Book excerpt: The feasibility is explored by single-beam coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering CARS spectroscopy of gas-phase diatomic molecules related to combusting flows, with implications for gas-phase thermometry. We demonstrate CARS of gas-phase N2 using a shaped 7 fs laser pulse, investigate the dependence of the CARS signal on the total pressure of the probed environment, both in pure N2 and in mixtures with Ar, discuss the observed signal-to-noise ratio, and suggest improvements to be considered for reliable single-shot measurements at flame temperatures.

Book excerpt: Principles and Applications of Quantum Contro Over the past fifteen years, significant developments have been made in utilizing quantum attributes of light and matter to assume unprecedented control over the dynamics of atomic and molecular systems. This growth reflects a confluence of factors including the maturation of quantum mechanics as a tool for chemistry and physics, the development of new laser devices increasing our ability to manipulate light, and the recognition that coherent laser light can be used to imprint information on atoms and molecules for practical purposes. Written by two of the world’s leading researchers in the field, Principles of the Quantum Control of Molecular Processes offers a systematic introduction to the fundamental principles of coherent control, and to the physics and chemistry necessary to master it Designed as both a resource for self-study and as a graduate textbook, this survey of the subject provides a step-by-step discussion of light-matter interactions along with coverage of such essential topics as: Molecular dynamics and control LI>The dynamics of photodissociation LI>Bimolecular collision processes LI>The control of chirality and asymmetric synthesis LI>Application of control using moderate and strong fields LI>Tuning the system and laser parameters to achieve optimal control LI>Decoherence and methods for countering it P>Both authoritative and comprehensive, this first in-depth treatment of coherent control is destined to become the standard reference in an increasingly influential field PAUL W. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition of the successful ready reference is updated and revised with approximately 30% new content to reflect the numerous instrumental developments and improvements, as well as the significant expansion of this rapidly developing field. For example, the combination of IR imaging with AFM has enhanced the achievable lateral resolution by an order of magnitude down to a few hundred nanometers, thus launching a multiplicity of new applications in material science. Furthermore, Raman and IR spectroscopic imaging have become key technologies for the life sciences and today contribute tremendously to a better and more detailed understanding of numerous biological and medical research topics. The topical structure of this new edition is now subdivided into four parts. The first treats the fundamentals of the instrumentation for infrared and Raman imaging and mapping and an overview on the chemometric tools for image analysis. The second part describes a wide varie-ty of applications ranging from biomedical via food, agriculture and plants to polymers and pharmaceuticals. This is followed by a description of imaging techniques operating beyond the diffraction limit, while the final part covers special methodical developments and their utility in specific fields. With its many valuable practical tips, this is a must-have overview for researchers in academic and industrial laboratories wishing to obtain reliable results with this method.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbulent reactive flows are of common occurrance in combustion engineering, chemical reactor technology and various types of engines producing power and thrust utilizing chemical and nuclear fuels. Pollutant formation and dispersion in the atmospheric environment and in rivers, lakes and ocean also involve interactions between turbulence, chemical reactivity and heat and mass transfer processes. Considerable advances have occurred over the past twenty years in the understanding, analysis, measurement, prediction and control of turbulent reactive flows. Two main contributors to such advances are improvements in instrumentation and spectacular growth in computation: hardware, sciences and skills and data processing software, each leading to developments in others. Turbulence presents several features that are situation-specific. Both for that reason and a number of others, it is yet difficult to visualize a so-called solution of the turbulence problem or even a generalized approach to the problem. It appears that recognition of patterns and structures in turbulent flow and their study based on considerations of stability, interactions, chaos and fractal character may be opening up an avenue of research that may be leading to a generalized approach to classification and analysis and, possibly, prediction of specific processes in the flowfield. Predictions for engineering use, on the other hand, can be foreseen for sometime to come to depend upon modeling of selected features of turbulence at various levels of sophistication dictated by perceived need and available capability.

This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this work is to study the interference between the coherent nonresonant four-wave-mixing (FWM) background and the Raman-resonant signal in the coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS). The nonresonant background is usually considered as a detriment to CARS. We prove that the background can be exploited in a controllable way, through the heterodyne detection due to the interference, to amplify the signal and optimize the spectral shape of the detected Raman signal, and hence enhance the measurement sensitivity. Our work is based on an optimized CARS technique which combines instantaneous coherent excitation of multiple characteristic molecular vibrations with subsequent probing of these vibrations by an optimally shaped, time-delayed, narrowband laser pulse. This pulse configuration mitigates the nonresonant background while maximizing the resonant signal, and allows rapid and highly specific detection even in the presence of multiple scattering. We investigate the possibility of applying this CARS technique to non-invasive monitoring of blood glucose levels. Under certain conditions we find that the measured signal is linearly proportional to the glucose concentration due to optical interference with the residual background light instead of a quadratic dependence, which allows reliable detection of spectral signatures down to medically-relevant glucose levels. With the goal of making the fullest use of the background, we study the interference between an external local oscillator (nonresonant FWM field) and the CARS signal field by controlling their relative phase and amplitude. Our experiment shows that this control allows direct observation of the real and imaginary components of the third-order nonlinear susceptibility (x(3)) of the Raman sample. In addition, this method can be used to amplify the signal significantly. Furthermore, we develop an approach by femtosecond laser pulse shaping to precisely control the interference between the Raman-resonant signal and its intrinsic nonresonant background generated within the same sample volume. This technique is similar to the heterodyne detection with the coherent background playing the role of the local oscillator field. By making fine adjustments to the probe field shape, we vary the relative phase between the resonant signal and the nonresonant background, and observe the varying spectral interference pattern. These controlled variations of the measured pattern reveal the phase information within the Raman spectrum, akin to holographic detection revealing the phase structure of a source.
