Book excerpt: WILEY-INTERSCIENCE PAPERBACK SERIES The Wiley-Interscience Paperback Series consists of selected books that have been made more accessible to consumers in an effort to increase global appeal and general circulation. With these new unabridged softcover volumes, Wiley hopes to extend the lives of these works by making them available to future generations of statisticians, mathematicians, and scientists. From the Reviews of Nonlinear Regression "A very good book and an important one in that it is likely to become a standard reference for all interested in nonlinear regression; and I would imagine that any statistician concerned with nonlinear regression would want a copy on his shelves." –The Statistician "Nonlinear Regression also includes a reference list of over 700 entries. The compilation of this material and cross-referencing of it is one of the most valuable aspects of the book. Nonlinear Regression can provide the researcher unfamiliar with a particular specialty area of nonlinear regression an introduction to that area of nonlinear regression and access to the appropriate references . . . Nonlinear Regression provides by far the broadest discussion of nonlinear regression models currently available and will be a valuable addition to the library of anyone interested in understanding and using such models including the statistical researcher." –Mathematical Reviews
Book Synopsis Nonlinear Regression Modeling for Engineering Applications by : R. Russell Rhinehart
Download or read book Nonlinear Regression Modeling for Engineering Applications written by R. Russell Rhinehart and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since mathematical models express our understanding of how nature behaves, we use them to validate our understanding of the fundamentals about systems (which could be processes, equipment, procedures, devices, or products). Also, when validated, the model is useful for engineering applications related to diagnosis, design, and optimization. First, we postulate a mechanism, then derive a model grounded in that mechanistic understanding. If the model does not fit the data, our understanding of the mechanism was wrong or incomplete. Patterns in the residuals can guide model improvement. Alternately, when the model fits the data, our understanding is sufficient and confidently functional for engineering applications. This book details methods of nonlinear regression, computational algorithms, model validation, interpretation of residuals, and useful experimental design. The focus is on practical applications, with relevant methods supported by fundamental analysis. This book will assist either the academic or industrial practitioner to properly classify the system, choose between the various available modeling options and regression objectives, design experiments to obtain data capturing critical system behaviors, fit the model parameters based on that data, and statistically characterize the resulting model. The author has used the material in the undergraduate unit operations lab course and in advanced control applications.

This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let us assume that an observation Xi is a random variable (r.v.) with values in 1 1 (1R1 , 8 ) and distribution Pi (1R1 is the real line, and 8 is the cr-algebra of its Borel subsets). Let us also assume that the unknown distribution Pi belongs to a 1 certain parametric family {Pi() , () E e}. We call the triple £i = {1R1 , 8 , Pi(), () E e} a statistical experiment generated by the observation Xi. n We shall say that a statistical experiment £n = {lRn, 8 , P; ,() E e} is the product of the statistical experiments £i, i = 1, ... ,n if PO' = P () X ... X P () (IRn 1 n n is the n-dimensional Euclidean space, and 8 is the cr-algebra of its Borel subsets). In this manner the experiment £n is generated by n independent observations X = (X1, ... ,Xn). In this book we study the statistical experiments £n generated by observations of the form j = 1, ... ,n. (0.1) Xj = g(j, (}) + cj, c c In (0.1) g(j, (}) is a non-random function defined on e , where e is the closure in IRq of the open set e ~ IRq, and C j are independent r. v .-s with common distribution function (dJ.) Book Synopsis Numerical Methods for Nonlinear Engineering Models by : John R. Hauser
Download or read book Numerical Methods for Nonlinear Engineering Models written by John R. Hauser and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-03-24 with total page 1013 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many books on the use of numerical methods for solving engineering problems and for modeling of engineering artifacts. In addition there are many styles of such presentations ranging from books with a major emphasis on theory to books with an emphasis on applications. The purpose of this book is hopefully to present a somewhat different approach to the use of numerical methods for - gineering applications. Engineering models are in general nonlinear models where the response of some appropriate engineering variable depends in a nonlinear manner on the - plication of some independent parameter. It is certainly true that for many types of engineering models it is sufficient to approximate the real physical world by some linear model. However, when engineering environments are pushed to - treme conditions, nonlinear effects are always encountered. It is also such - treme conditions that are of major importance in determining the reliability or failure limits of engineering systems. Hence it is essential than engineers have a toolbox of modeling techniques that can be used to model nonlinear engineering systems. Such a set of basic numerical methods is the topic of this book. For each subject area treated, nonlinear models are incorporated into the discussion from the very beginning and linear models are simply treated as special cases of more general nonlinear models. This is a basic and fundamental difference in this book from most books on numerical methods.
Book Synopsis Bayesian Methods for Nonlinear Classification and Regression by : David G. T. Denison
Download or read book Bayesian Methods for Nonlinear Classification and Regression written by David G. T. Denison and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2002-05-06 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Explicit Nonlinear Model Predictive Control by : Alexandra Grancharova
Download or read book Explicit Nonlinear Model Predictive Control written by Alexandra Grancharova and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-03-22 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) has become the accepted methodology to solve complex control problems related to process industries. The main motivation behind explicit NMPC is that an explicit state feedback law avoids the need for executing a numerical optimization algorithm in real time. The benefits of an explicit solution, in addition to the efficient on-line computations, include also verifiability of the implementation and the possibility to design embedded control systems with low software and hardware complexity. This book considers the multi-parametric Nonlinear Programming (mp-NLP) approaches to explicit approximate NMPC of constrained nonlinear systems, developed by the authors, as well as their applications to various NMPC problem formulations and several case studies. The following types of nonlinear systems are considered, resulting in different NMPC problem formulations: ؠ Nonlinear systems described by first-principles models and nonlinear systems described by black-box models; - Nonlinear systems with continuous control inputs and nonlinear systems with quantized control inputs; - Nonlinear systems without uncertainty and nonlinear systems with uncertainties (polyhedral description of uncertainty and stochastic description of uncertainty); - Nonlinear systems, consisting of interconnected nonlinear sub-systems. The proposed mp-NLP approaches are illustrated with applications to several case studies, which are taken from diverse areas such as automotive mechatronics, compressor control, combustion plant control, reactor control, pH maintaining system control, cart and spring system control, and diving computers.
