Book excerpt: A numerical method is developed based on potential flow nonlinear lifting surface theory for predicting the surface velocities and pressures on a rotor blade of an arbitrary helicopter rotor system which is executing a constant rotational and constant axial translational motion including, specifically, the hover flight mode. The formulation of the problem is exact in the sense that the normal surface boundary condition is satisfied on the surface of the rotor blade. The problem is governed by a Fredholm integral equation of the first kind which relates a singular velocity doublet potential surface distribution applied on the rotor blades and wakes to the normal relative velocity on the rotor blade surface. The wake model is assumed to be of a prescribed shape. (Modified author abstract).

Book excerpt: The Green's function approach for the subsonic compressible potential flow over a helicopter rotor in hover or steady state vertical climb was examined. Several methods of approach were taken to derive the Green's function. An attempt to derive the Green's function directly from the differential equation written in the non-inertial coordinate system was not successful. However, since the Green's function was known in the inertial system, a transformation of the integral equation for the velocity potential in this system was transformed successfully to the blade fixed coordinate system. The resulting integral equation involves surface derivatives which preclude the use of previous numerical schemes for its solution. A second part of the report includes the results of the second iteration for the force-free wake of a rotor in hover.

An unknown velocity doublet distribtuion is imposed on both the blade and wake surfaces, satisfying the normal boundary conditions on the true wetted surface and the Kutta condition at the trailing edge. The governing equation, then, becomes a Fredholm integral equation of the first kind. A numerical scheme is developed to solve the doublet strength distribution by approximating the surface with a finite number of uniformly loaded elements and satisfying the boundary conditions at their centroids. The integral equation is thereby transformed into a system of linear algebraic equations. The solution provides the velocity magnitude and direction, and the pressures on the blade surface.
