Book excerpt: Nonlinear finite difference simulations are performed to model the seismic source functions for decoupled, partially coupled, and overdecoupled explosions in air-filled cavities in salt and unsaturated tuff emplacement media. The tuff simulations are performed in an 11 meter cavity under conditions similar to the Mill Yard experiment. The salt simulations are performed in a 17 meter cavity under conditions similar to the Sterling test. The maximum low frequency decoupling factor in the tuff simulations is approximately 40. The low value of the decoupling factor is the result of the low shear modulus and poor tamped coupling of this material. The maximum decoupling factor is nearly twice as large as would be expected for a linear material model because the shock wave induces pore crushing that leads to a substantial loss of energy in the nonlinear case. An important result of this research is that the low frequency source amplitude increases very slowly as the yield is increased above the yield required for full decoupling. At high frequencies, there is little difference between simulations with linear and nonlinear material models for decoupled or partially coupled explosions, except for attenuation due to pore crushing. Keywords: Seismology, Nuclear explosion simulation. (aw).

Book excerpt: The research investigated the high frequency characteristics of the seismic sources corresponding to cavity decoupled nuclear explosions and to assess the implications of these investigations with regard to the detection and discrimination of small decoupled explosions. This study has been carried out using a combination of deterministic simulations and analyses of empirical data recorded from selected cavity decoupled explosions. With regard to the deterministic simulations, a series of nonlinear finite difference calculations have been performed to simulate cavity decoupled explosions in unsaturated tuff and salt emplacement media. These simulations have confirmed the fact that the simple step pressure approximation is not valid at high frequencies and that the initial pressure spike on the cavity wall can induce significant nonlinear response. Preliminary analyses of high frequency seismic data recorded from the STERLING decoupled explosion in salt and the MILL YARD decoupled explosion in unsaturated tuff have provided evidence that the high frequency source components associated with the complex cavity pressure loadings do effectively couple into the seismic regime, in agreement with the predictions of the nonlinear finite difference simulations.

Book Synopsis Analysis of Two Decoupled Explosion Simulations by : Thomas C. Bache
Download or read book Analysis of Two Decoupled Explosion Simulations written by Thomas C. Bache and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two axisymmetric ground motion calculations were carried out by Applied Theory, Incorporated to simulate 25 kt decoupled nuclear explosions in mined cavities in salt. One cavity was spherical with a radius of 66 meters while the other was a 3/1 aspect ratio ellipsoid of revolution. Both had the same volume. Results of the two calculations were analyzed to determine the character of the teleseismic body and surface waves. The spherically symmetric portion of the field is slightly (20-25%) smaller for the spherical cavity. Compared to results of tamped explosions, the decoupling factor for this case is about 140 at one Hertz. The radiation from the ellipsoidal cavity is substantially perturbed from spherical symmetry; the maximum S wave amplitudes are nearly three times as large as maximum P wave amplitudes at 1.0 Hz. However, theoretical body and surface wave seismograms indicate that the M sub B and M sub S values are not substantially different for the two cavities.

Book Synopsis Analysis and Simulation of Cavity-Decoupled Chemical Explosions by :
Download or read book Analysis and Simulation of Cavity-Decoupled Chemical Explosions written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We analyze data from two sets of decoupled chemical explosions. NORSAR has obtained data from seven decoupled chemical explosions conducted from 1987-2002 in Alvdalen, Sweden, recorded both in he near field and on regional seismic stations NORES, HAGFORS, and NORSAR. The explosions were conducted in three granite chambers at a depth of approximately 100 meters in chambers with volumes of 200, 300 and 1000 m and yields ranging from 2500 kg to 10,000 kg. The smallest explosion in the largest chamber is almost fully decoupled while the other explosions are partially coupled, overdriven by up to a factor of 25. The data show that decoupling remains fairly constant for overdrive up to about a factor of 10, then decreases rapidly at higher yields. 1D and 3D simulations of these explosions are performed to model the data. IDG has digitized a set of surface seismic data recorded from a series of Soviet high-explosive cavity decoupling tests conducted in a mine in Kirghizia in the summer of 1960.
Book Synopsis UNDERGROUND EXPLOSION EFFECTS. by : D. C. Sachs
Download or read book UNDERGROUND EXPLOSION EFFECTS. written by D. C. Sachs and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Project 1.7 of Operation TEAPOT was concerned with the measurement of surface and subsurface effects of an underground explosion of a 1.2-kt nuclear burst (Shot 7). The measurements included free-field earth and airblast effects, as well as loading on underground structural devices. This report deals with the presentation and analysis of the free-field data only; the structural data have been transmitted to the appropriate agencies for their analysis. From the 76 channels installed on TEAPOT Shot 7, 75 usable records were obtained. The free-field quantities measured include air-blast pressure, earth acceleration, earth stress and strain, and permanent earth displacement. The results are discussed by phenomenon and, in each case, the TEAPOT data are compared with pretest predictions. Also, where data are available, comparisons are made with previous underground nuclear test results. Some aspects of seismology and soil mechanics as applied to underground explosion phenomena are presented and, finally, the most pertinent high explosives results from subsequent tests conducted at the TEAPOT location are summarized.
