The model is based on a general variational formulation for thin-walled beams with open or closed sections; the mathematical development uses an updated Lagrangian description for shallow arches, taking into account geometrical and material nonlinearities, residual stresses, member initial imperfections, warping, and connection flexibility. The model has been used to evaluate second-order effects and the influence of residual stresses and joint flexibility on the behavior of plane frames. A semirigid space frame has been analyzed and the gain in rigidity offered by a horizontal rigid diaphragm has been evaluated.

Book excerpt: The light-frame wood structure is an assemblage of several components such as walls, floors and roof connected by intercomponent connections such as nails or metal plates. The behavior of the full-structure is determined by the behavior of the individual components and connections. Whereas individual substructures were investigated both experimentally and analytically, there is a lack of research aimed to incorporate individual components of the light-frame wood building into the full-structure model. This research provides an analytical tool to investigate the behavior of light-frame wood structures loaded by static loads. Special attention is given to load sharing among wall components. A one story, 16- by 32-ft (4.88- by 9.75-m) wood-frame building was tested under cyclic quasi-static loads. Results of the experiment were used to verify a nonlinear finite-element model of the full building. Concepts of superelements and substructuring are applied to the finite-element problem. A special quasi-superelement energetically equivalent to a three-dimensional finite-element model of the full substructure was developed to represent the walls. Intercomponent connections were transformed into one-dimensional nonlinear elements, which had properties obtained from experiments and detailed finite-element analyses. The full structure was an assemblage of the superelements representing floor and roof, and quasi-superelements, which represented walls and intercomponent connections. Boundary conditions and loads used in the experiment were applied to the model, and deformations and reaction forces were compared. A sensitivity study of the model was performed, and the influences of the properties of substructures and intercomponent connections on the load sharing capability of the model were investigated. The response of the three-dimensional model of the full-structure to the static wind loads was studied and compared with currently used analytical models. Linear and nonlinear analytical models for computing reaction forces in the shear walls were proposed and their sensitivity studied. Stress analysis of the three-dimensional substructure was performed when the full model was loaded by a combination of dead, snow and wind load. Use of tensorial strength criteria as a part of the postprocessing procedure was demonstrated on evaluation of stresses in plywood sheathing.

Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the discussion and studies of simple and efficient numerical procedures for large deflection and elasto-plastic analysis of steel frames under static and dynamic loading. In chapter 1, the basic fundamental behaviour and philosophy for design of structural steel is discussed, emphasising different modes of buckling and the inter-relationship between different types of analysis. In addition to this, different levels of refinement for non-linear analysis are described. An introduction is also given to the well-known P-&dgr; and P-&Dgr; effects. Chapter 2 presents the basic matrix method of analysis and gives several examples of linear analysis of semi-rigid pointed frames. It is evident from this that one must have a good understanding of first-order linear analysis before handling a second-order non-linear analysis. In chapter 3, the linearized bifurcation and second-order large deflection are compared and the detailed procedure for a second-order analysis based on the Newton-Raphson scheme is described. Chapter 4 introduces various solution schemes for tracing of post-buckling equilibrium paths and the Minimum Residual Displacement control method with arc-length load step control is employed for the post-buckling analysis of two and three dimensional structures. Chapter 5 addresses the non-linear behaviour and modelling of semi-rigid connections while several numerical functions for description of moment versus rotation curves of typical connection types are introduced. The scope of the work in chapter 6 covers semi-rigid connections and material yielding to the static analysis of steel frames. Chapter 7 studies the cyclic response of steel frames with semi-rigid joints and elastic material characteristics. In the last chapter the combined effects of semi-rigid connections and plastic hinges on steel frames under time-dependent loads are studied using a simple springs-in-series model. For computational effectiveness and efficiency, the concentrated plastic hinge concept is used throughout these studies.

Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2014 in the subject Engineering - Civil Engineering, grade: 9, , course: Advanced Steel Structures, language: English, abstract: This dissertation presents three various advanced analysis approaches which can capture accurately and efficiently the ultimate strength and behavior of steel framed structures with nonlinear beam-to-column connections subjected to static and dynamic loadings. Three major sources of nonlinearity are considered in the analyses as follows: (1) material nonlinearity; (2) geometric nonlinearity; and (3) connection nonlinearity. Three types of nonlinear beam-column element formulation considering both geometric and material nonlinearities are coded into two nonlinear structural analysis programs: (1) Nonlinear Structural Analysis Program (NSAP) – 2-D plastic-zone finite element; (2) Practical Advanced Analysis Program (PAAP) – 3-D refined plastic-hinge element and 3-D plastic-fiber element. Three types of steel frames analyzed by the proposed program are: (1) rigid frames – beam-to-column connections are fully rigid; (2) linear semi-rigid frames – beam-to-column connections have constant stiffness; and (3) nonlinear semi-rigid frames – beam-to-column connections have continuously variable stiffness. Three types of analysis can be performed are: (1) nonlinear inelastic static analysis; (2) nonlinear elastic and inelastic time-history analysis; and (3) free vibration analysis. Three main resources of damping are taken into account in the proposed programs are: (1) hysteretic damping due to inelastic material; (2) structural viscous damping employing Rayleigh damping; (3) hysteretic damping due to nonlinear beam-to-column connections. Two computer programs are developed: (1) Nonlinear Structural Analysis Program (NSAP) – written in the C++ programming language; (2) Practical Advanced Analysis Program (PAAP) – written in the FORTRAN 77 programming language. They are verified for accuracy and computational efficiency by comparing predicted results with those generated by the commercial finite element analysis packages of ABAQUS and SAP2000, and other results available in the literature. Through several numerical examples, the proposed program (PAAP) proves to be a reliable and efficient tool for daily practice design in lieu of using costly and time-consuming commercial software.

Book excerpt: The availability of computers has, in real terms, moved forward the practice of structural engineering. Where it was once enough to have any analysis given a complex configuration, the profession today is much more demanding. How engineers should be more demanding is the subject of this book. In terms of the theory of structures, the importance of geometric nonlinearities is explained by the theorem which states that "In the presence of prestress, geometric nonlinearities are of the same order of magnitude as linear elastic effects in structures. " This theorem implies that in most cases (in all cases of incremental analysis) geometric nonlinearities should be considered. And it is well known that problems of buckling, cable nets, fabric structures, ... REQUIRE the inclusion of geometric nonlinearities. What is offered in the book which follows is a unified approach (for both discrete and continuous systems) to geometric nonlinearities which incidentally does not require a discussion of large strain. What makes this all work is perturbation theory. Let the equations of equilibrium for a system be written as where P represents the applied loads, F represents the member forces or stresses, and N represents the operator which describes system equilibrium.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of the digital computer has given great impetus to the development of modern discretization methods in structural mechanics. The young history of the finite element method (FEM) reflects the dramatic increase of computing speed and storage capacity within a relatively short period of time. The history of the boundary element method (BEM) is still younger. Presently, intense scientific efforts aimed at extending the range of application of the BEM can be observed. More than 10 years ago, O.C. Zienkiewicz and his co-workers published the first papers on the coupling of FE and BE discretizations of subregions of solids for the purpose of exploiting the complementary advantages of the two discretization methods and reducing their disadvantages. The FEM has revolutionized structural analysis in industry as well as academia. The BEM has a fair share in the continuation of this revolution. Both discretization methods have become a domain of vigorous, world-wide research activities. The rapid increase of the number of specialized journals and scientific meetings indicates the remarkable increase of research efforts in this important subdolll.ain of computational ulechanics. Several discussions of this situation in the Committee for Discretization Methods ill Solid Mechanics of the Society for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (GAMM) resulted in the plan to submit a proposal to the General Assembly of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) to sponsor a pertinent IUTAM Symposium.
