Book excerpt: Recent scientific and technical advances have made it possible to create matter in the laboratory under conditions relevant to astrophysical systems such as supernovae and black holes. These advances will also benefit inertial confinement fusion research and the nation's nuclear weapon's program. The report describes the major research facilities on which such high energy density conditions can be achieved and lists a number of key scientific questions about high energy density physics that can be addressed by this research. Several recommendations are presented that would facilitate the development of a comprehensive strategy for realizing these research opportunities.

First, there are the wave steepening effects which can occur in any fluid in which the propagation speed depends upon the wave-amplitude. In a dispersive medium this can lead to classes of nonlinear waves which may have stationary solutions like solitons and shocks. Because the plasma also acts like an inherently nonlinear dielectric resonant interactions among waves lead to exchange of energy among them. Further, an electromagnetic wave interacting with a plasma may parametrically excite other waves in the plasma. A large-amplitude Langmuir wave undergoes a modulational instability which arises through local depressions in plasma density and the corresponding increases in the energy density of the wave electric field. Whereas a field collapse occurs in two and three dimensions, in a one-dimensional case, spatially localized stationary field structures called Langmuir solitons can result. Many other plasma waves like upper-hybrid waves, lower-hybrid waves etc. can also undergo a modulational instability and produce localized field structures. A new type of nonlinear effect comes into play when an electromagnetic wave propagating through a plasma is strong enough to drive the electrons to relativistic speeds. This leads to a propagation of an electromagnetic wave in a normally overdense plasma, and the coupling of the electromagnetic wave to a Langmuir wave in the plasma. The relativistic mass variation of the electrons moving in an intense electromagnetic wave can also lead to a modulational instability of the latter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to the physics of laser-plasma interactions (LPI), based on a graduate course taught by the author. The emphasis is on high-energy-density physics (HEDP) and inertial confinement fusion (ICF), with a comprehensive description of the propagation, absorption, nonlinear effects and parametric instabilities of high energy lasers in plasmas. The recent demonstration of a burning plasma on the verge of nuclear fusion ignition at the National Ignition Facility in Livermore, California, has marked the beginning of a new era of ICF and fusion research. These new developments make LPI more relevant than ever, and the resulting influx of new scientists necessitates new pedagogical material on the subject. In contrast to the classical textbooks on LPI, this book provides a complete description of all wave-coupling instabilities in unmagnetized plasmas in the kinetic as well as fluid pictures, and includes a comprehensive description of the optical smoothing techniques used on high-power lasers and their impact on laser-plasma instabilities. It summarizes all the key developments from the 1970s to the present day in view of the current state of LPI and ICF research; it provides a derivation of the key LPI metrics and formulas from first principles, and connects the theory to experimental observables. With exercises and plenty of illustrations, this book is ideal as a textbook for a course on laser-plasma interactions or as a supplementary text for graduate introductory plasma physics course. Students and researchers will also find it to be an invaluable reference and self-study resource.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For some time now there has been an interest in the nop. linear interaction of electromagnetic waves in plasma [1,2]. But only in the last few years has the theory of nonlinear wave inter action effects undergone such vigorous development as to result in the formulation of clear phYSical concepts regarding the mech anisms of interaction. This development has been engendered by attempts to solve many of the plasma-physical problems accom panying the tremendous growth of experimental research [3]. The importance of nonlinear effects in modern plasma physics is dis cussed in detail in Chap. I. At this point we merely stress the fact that today the analysis of nonlinear effects is a practical ne cessity in any experiment involving plasma instabilities. We should also point out that plasma instabilities can assert them selves extensively in solids (solid state plasma) and play an im portant part in the study of cosmic plasma. Consequently, the problems of nonlinear wave interaction in plasma are of concern to those working in widely different areas of physics. Yet it is difficult to assimilate the results of investigations on nonlinear effects, owing to the complicated way in which the results of orig inal research are presented. In the present book the author hopes in some measure to fill the need for a text on the physics of non linear effects that is accessible to a fairly general audience.

Book excerpt: This book attempts to give a discussion of the physics and current and potential applications of the self-focusing of an intense femtosecond laser pulse in a tra- parent medium. Although self-focusing is an old subject of nonlinear optics, the consequence of self-focusing of intense femtosecond laser pulses is totally new and unexpected. Thus, new phenomena are observed, such as long range lam- tation, intensity clamping, white light laser pulse, self-spatial ltering, self-group phase locking, self-pulse compression, clean nonlinear uorescence, and so on. Long range propagation at high intensity, which is seemingly against the law of diffraction, is probably one of the most exciting consequences of this new sub- eld of nonlinear optics. Because the intensity inside the lament core is high, new ways of doing nonlinear optics inside the lament become possible. We call this lamentation nonlinear optics. We shall describe the generation of pulses at other wavelengths in the visible and ultraviolet (UV) starting from the near infrared pump pulse at 800 nm through four-wave-mixing and third harmonic generation, all in gases. Remotely sensing uorescence from the fragments of chemical and biological agents in all forms, gaseous, aerosol or solid, inside the laments in air is demonstrated in the labo- tory. The results will be shown in the last part of the book. Through analyzing the uorescence of gas molecules inside the lament, an unexpected physical process pertaining to the interaction of synchrotron radiation with molecules is observed.

Book excerpt: We examine nonlinear laser pulse dynamics in plasma, encompassing both transverse and longitudinal envelope effects, in isolation and when coupled by the plasma. This is underpinned by an interest in how strong magnetic fields, aligned along the laser axis, modify these processes. In the presence of a strong magnetic field, such that the electron cyclotron frequency is on the order of the laser frequency, there is dramatic modification to the laser-plasma interactions, with the electron motion under left circularly polarised light remaining weakly-relativistic-like at laser intensities typically associated with fully-relativistic behaviour. Conversely right circularly polarised light sees the opposite effect, with the laser-plasma interactions becoming nonlinear at much lower light intensities. This affects all processes underpinned by relativistic motion of the electrons, chiefly self-focusing and self-compression. Such processes are studied in detail for both unmagnetised and magnetised plasma, and the results are compared. We find that not only does an external field alter the relativistic response of the electrons, but it also modifies the laser group and phase velocities, making the pulse shape of interest to the envelope dynamics. We apply this to study spherical compression of a laser pulse, wherein the pulse dimensions reduce symmetrically towards a single cycle. This process results in greatly amplified single-cycle pulses in the lambda-cubic regime, which may peak at over 100 times the initial laser intensity. Finally, the process by which a fully relativistic pulse may amplify an existing magnetic field is examined. We find that while this effect is known of for Laguerre-Gaussian light, it can also occur for linearly polarised light. The pondero motive effect of the laser, and the external field trapping particles which would otherwise escape, bends their trajectories such that a self-sustaining azimuthal current forms. This current scales with both laser intensity and plasma density, and may produce fields of up to 10 kilotesla. We offer that this work may be of interest for the manipulation of low-power or long-wavelength lasers in underdense plasma, the generation of single-cycle pulses for high-harmonic generation and the generation of localised, quasistatic ultra-intense magnetic fields.

Book excerpt: The heating of a dense plasma by a laser through the exciation of parametric instabilities is examined in detail. These instabilities convert laser energy into plasma density fluctuations (or waves) which ultimately result in particle heating by collitionless and collisional wave damping. A comprehensive nonlinear weak-turbulence theory of the saturation of these instabilities is developed, and the saturated plasma wave spectrum for the case of nearly equal electron and ion temperatures is computed. The saturated wave level permits the calculation of the nonlinear absorption coefficient of the laser which can be considerably enhanced over the linear (inverse bremsstrahlung) value for typical laser power densities. The self-consistent propagation of the laser beam, including this nonlinear absorption in an overdense inhomogeneous plasma, is studied in a one-dimensional model; and the reflection coefficient as a function of incident power is computed.
