Book excerpt: "This thesis deals with the theoretical study of the linear and nonlinear dynamics of a slender flexible cantilevered cylindrical structure subjected to external axial water and air flows, of interest because of several important practical applications such as nuclear reactor fuel-element bundles, double pipe heat exchangers, and angioplasty. Lack of knowledge to account for the three-dimensional behaviour, important in the above-mentioned practical applications, was the motivation behind the present work. The theoretical results were obtained in the form of the amplitudes and frequencies of the instabilities, as well as the critical flow velocities at which these instabilities occurred. Experiments were conducted to validate and complement the theoretical results for water flow. The results obtained from the experiments were presented in the form of dimensionless mean displacements, their corresponding root mean square values, and frequencies as a function of dimensionless flow velocity. Finally, the path traced by the oscillating cylinder was mapped. In fluid-structure interaction problems, the fluid forces such as the inviscid hydrodynamic forces, the frictional or viscous forces, and the hydrostatic or pressure forces acting on the flexible structure play a vital role in defining the dynamics of the system. Therefore, a precise calculation of the force coefficients, such as longitudinal and normal viscous coefficients, base drag coefficient, and zero-flow normal force coefficient present in the equations of motion associated to the above mentioned fluid forces, is imperative. These presently calculated force coefficients were then incorporated in the linear and nonlinear equations of motion and solved to obtain the response of the cylinder in water flow. The response of the system from the linear model in air flow was also obtained. The effect of confinement on the linear dynamics was also studied. A nonlinear three-dimensional cantilevered cylinder model was also created and simulated in a commercially available finite element modeling and simulation package, namely ADINA, in order to complement the results obtained from the linear and nonlinear models. The results of the ADINA simulations were obtained in water as well as air flows.Experimental results validated the analytical and numerical model results. The results, thus obtained, are expected to play an important role in improving the above-mentioned engineering and medical applications to ensure operation below critical flow conditions." --

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of non-Newtonian, viscoelastic flow past a confined circular cylinder is conducted for a Boger fluid, which is a polymer solution consisting of polyisobutylene, tetradecane, and polybutene. We utilized particle image velocimetry (PIV) to measure the full-field, instantaneous velocity in the inertialess flow past a circular cylinder. Two separate channel-cylinder aspect ratios were examined, i.e., & Lambda; = 2 and 16, for start-up and steady flow past a cylinder.

Book excerpt: The German Aerospace Research Establishment (DFVLR) has initiated a new series of seminars concerning fundamental problems in applied engineering sciences. These seminars will be devoted to interdisciplinary topics related to the vast variety of DFVLR activities in the fields of fluid mechanics, flight mechanics, guidance and control, materials and struc tures, non-nuclear energetics, communication technology, and remote sensing. The purpose of the series is twofold, namely, to bring modern ideas and techniques to the attention of the DFVLR in order to stimulate internal activi ties, and secondly, to promulgate DFVLR achievements wi thin the international scientific/technical community. To this end, prominent speakers from Germany and other countries will be invited to join in a series of lectures and discussions on certain topics of mutual interest. The first colloquium of this series dealt with the dynamics of nonlinear systems, especially in relation'to its application to fluid mechanics, particularly in transcritical flows. Of special interest are questions concerning the formation of nonlinear three-dimensional structures in classical fluid mechanical stability problems, the physical process of transition to turbulence, and the appearance of chaotic solutions. The scope of lectures reaches from self-organization in physical systems to structural stability of three-dimensional vortex patterns, the treatment of dissipative and conservative systems, the formation of nonlinear structures in the region of laminar-turbulent transition, and numerical simulation of cumulus cloud convection in meteorology. The seminar should provide an insight into the extent to which theoretical findings in Non linear Dynamics apply to the comprehension of fluid-mechanical problems.

Book excerpt: The first of two books concentrating on the dynamics of slender bodies within or containing axial flow, Fluid-Structure Interaction, Volume 1 covers the fundamentals and mechanisms giving rise to flow-induced vibration, with a particular focus on the challenges associated with pipes conveying fluid. This volume has been thoroughly updated to reference the latest developments in the field, with a continued emphasis on the understanding of dynamical behaviour and analytical methods needed to provide long-term solutions and validate the latest computational methods and codes. In this edition, Chapter 7 from Volume 2 has also been moved to Volume 1, meaning that Volume 1 now mainly treats the dynamics of systems subjected to internal flow, whereas in Volume 2 the axial flow is in most cases external to the flow or annular. Provides an in-depth review of an extensive range of fluid-structure interaction topics, with detailed real-world examples and thorough referencing throughout for additional detail Organized by structure and problem type, allowing you to dip into the sections that are relevant to the particular problem you are facing, with numerous appendices containing the equations relevant to specific problems Supports development of long-term solutions by focusing on the fundamentals and mechanisms needed to understand underlying causes and operating conditions under which apparent solutions might not prove effective

The cylinders may be either isolated or be part of a cluster of identical cylinders. Gravity and pressurization effects are taken into account. It is shown that small flow velocities damp free motions, but that at sufficiently high flow velocities hydroelastic instabilities are possible. (Modified author abstract).

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This plenary paper and the accompanying presentation have highlighted field problems involving fluid-structure interaction over a wide span of Navy operations. Considering the vast size and versatility of the Navy's inventory, the cases presented represent examples of a much larger problem. But even this limited set provides sufficient evidence that fluid-structure interaction does hinder the Navy's ability to accomplish its missions. This survey has also established that there are no accurate and generally applicable design tools for addressing these problems. In the majority of cases the state-of-practice is to either make ad-hoc adjustments and estimates based on historical evidence, or conduct expensive focused tests directed at each specific problem and/or candidate solution. Unfortunately, these approaches do not provide insight into the fundamental problem, and neither can be considered reliable regarding their likelihood of success. So the opportunities for applying computational fluid-structure interaction modeling to Navy problems appear limitless. Scenarios range from the "simple" resonant strumming of underwater and in-air cables, to the "self-contained" flow field and vibration of aircraft/ordnance bodies at various Mach numbers, to violent underwater transient detonations and local hull structural collapse. Generally applicable and computationally tractable design-oriented models for these phenomena are of course still far in the future. But the Navy has taken the first steps in that direction by sponsoring specialized numerical models, validation experiments tailored for specific applications, and conferences such as this one.
