Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 23 (thesis year 1978) a total of 10,148 theses titles from 27 Canadian and 220 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 23 reports these submitted in 1978, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: The nonlinear dynamic analysis of cable and cable-large body systems subject to both deterministic and non-deterministic loading is presented in this study. Nonlinearities occur due to large displacements, material nonlinearity, lack of stiffness in compression, and the non-conservative fluid loading. A finite element model is used to model the cable and rigid motions of the large body. The linearized incremental equations of motion for both linear elastic and viscoelastic materials are derived. Solution procedures for both static and dynamic analyses are presented. A wake-oscillator model is used to model cable strumming effects: transverse motions of the cable are assumed to be small compared to the in-line displacements and the transverse frequency is much higher than the in-line frequency. The computational procedure for the prediction of cable strumming using a mode-superposition technique is given. The stochastic response of the cable system is analyzed in the frequency domain. Cable vibrations were assumed to be small displacement about the static configuration. The nonlinear fluid drag force is linearized by a least square method. The linearized equation of motions are decoupled by a method proposed by Foss (1958). Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the validity and the capability of the finite element models and the proposed numerical techniques.

Book excerpt: Mobile robotics is a challenging field with great potential. It covers disciplines including electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, cognitive science, and social science. It is essential to the design of automated robots, in combination with artificial intelligence, vision, and sensor technologies. Mobile robots are widely used for surveillance, guidance, transportation and entertainment tasks, as well as medical applications. This Special Issue intends to concentrate on recent developments concerning mobile robots and the research surrounding them to enhance studies on the fundamental problems observed in the robots. Various multidisciplinary approaches and integrative contributions including navigation, learning and adaptation, networked system, biologically inspired robots and cognitive methods are welcome contributions to this Special Issue, both from a research and an application perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nonlinear dynamic analysis of cable and membrane structures is presented in this study. Attention is given to the nonlinearities arising from large displacements, from nonlinear stress-strain relationships and from nonconservative loadings. The finite element method is used to model the cables and membranes. Curvilinear geometries of the elements are approximated by using higher-order interpolation polynomials. The relative advantages and disadvantages of adopting elements with various orders of approximating functions are determined by a variety of example problems. Full interaction between the cables and membranes in a structure can be realized by selecting compatible elements. Any desired nonlinear constitutive equation can be specified for the cable and membrane elements. The ability to handle nonconservative loadings is demonstrated by studying the dynamic responses of cables and membranes in a fluid medium. The governing equations of motion of cables and membranes are derived from the three-dimensional equations of finite elasticity. Curvilinear, convected coordinates are used to describe the undeformed and deformed configurations of a body. The total Lagrangian description and the principle of virtual work are used to formulate the equilibrium equations. Specializations to cables and membranes are made by assuming that states of uniaxial stress and plane stress exist in the cables and membranes, respectively. The magnitudes of the displacements and strains are not restricted. Explicit stressstrain relationships are neither assumed nor required. Isoparametric representation is used to formulate curved cable and membrane finite elements. The element matrices are evaluated by numerical integrations. The global dynamic equations of motions are integrated by the Newmark's method. An iteration scheme is used to minimize the residual errors. Numerical examples are included to demonstrate the validity and capability of the finite element models and the solution techniques. Higher-order elements are found to be more accurate than linear elements in general, but are computationally more costly. The potential of the finite element method in analyzing the nonlinear dynamic response of submerged cable and membrane structures to wave forces is demonstrated.
